Blacklist: Dvein ~ Rdio

Sculpture for HAIM‘S My Song 5 ||||| Symbiosis for The Dismemberment Plan‘s Daddy Was a Real Good Dancer

From Blacklist‘s directing collective Dvein: Two entries into the New Music Weekly compaign on Rdio, the three-year-old challenger brand that has been outpacing longstanding leaders in the category such as Spotify, Pandora, MOG and Grooveshark. The innovative New Music Weekly campaign, launched last July, brings together the best in independent art and music with a series of original video pieces from visual artists around the world inspired by new music.

“We don’t see these as music videos but instead something more personal for our visual artists, creating art inspired by music, rather than literal interpretations,” said Nada Antoun, Global PR Director of Rdio, which is owned by Skype. “This campaign has shown that new art inspired by new music promotes discovery.”

“Music has a lot to do with an emotional connection with your past and future,” said collective Dvein. “We wanted to create experiences that express that in some way, the nostalgia of what you’ve heard and the excitement for new music, and Rdio gives us both.”

Diddo: Ecce Animal

UK artist Diddo‘s latest commissioned project: Ecce Animal : a 12 x 18 x 22 cm skull of street sourced, compression molded Cocaine and Gelatin … challenging assumptions about human nature, specifically the tension between biology and society and how it defines our humanity.

“In order to prepare and analyze the purity of the accumulated ‘street’ Cocaine, I contacted pharmacists at a renowned laboratory.” Read more about the testing procedures and the lab results.

Once we were animals.
Like any other, we lived in an environment of fear and want.
Then, we became ‘human’ and aspired to be better.
We learned to control our environment but the fear stayed,
because we never learned to control ourselves.

It is frightening to look at the face of our animal side laid bare
by comfortable excess; the spoils of its aggression.

But what exactly is it about this image that is so confronting?
Is it this division in our idea of self?
Or is it a realization that though we have mastered the outside world,
we will always remain subservient to our inner selves.

Cuushe + Yoko Kuno: Airy Me

Simply a beautiful and poetic track that comes with a brilliantly directed animation!

Yoko Kuno has directed the video for “Airy me”, included in Cuushe‘s debut album “Red Rocket Telepathy” (2009) that has been released on Flau records. The animator has used 3000 individual hand-drawn illustrations to create this incredibly rich and intricate world all around Cuushe’s dream pop song.

Cuushe herself has described the story behind this video to Dazed Digital:

” The prologue is set in the past.  In a hospital, a doctor is doing mysterious living-body experiments. A nurse runs to a tree and eats an apple from the tree, but when she opens the apple there is a worm inside.  Humans made the apple.  This represents the idea that the place is still under the control of the doctor who is carrying out these experiments. In the main part of the animation the patient is being given an injection everyday and when she receives her final dose, her nose turns into a switch. Upon pressing the button, the young girl turns in to a chimera. Even though she may be a chimera, she still has human heart. What’s going to happen to her? This is the main theme of the video. Is it a dream? Is it real? Where am I? Who am I? These are things I think about when I watch this animation”.

Cuushe’s new album “Butterfly Case” will be released on September 23rd by Flau.
