ZEEL announce financial relief to 5000+ daily wage earners impacted due to COVID-19 lockdown

ZEE Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL), in order to contribute in the nation’s fight against Covid-19, has announced to offer financial relief to over 5000 daily wage earners, working directly or indirectly for the company in its overall production ecosystem.

Gauging the unprecedented impact caused to all daily wage earners due to the lockdown, as a responsible player in the media & entertainment sector, ZEEL has taken this step ensuring that the families of daily wage earners do not get impacted during this challenging phase.

In order to further support prime ministers’ Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund), ZEEL will leverage the strength of its media network across the nation and world at large, encouraging over 1.3 billion people to contribute.

Over and above this step, ZEEL has also provided an opportunity to all of its 3500 employees to offer voluntary contributions towards the PM CARES Fund through an intranet portal. The company will match the corpus collected from the employee contribution and the collective amount will be donated to PM CARES Fund.

Punit Goenka

Commenting on this initiative, ZEEL managing director and chief executive officer Punit Goenka said, “We stand committed to financially support all the daily wage earners working in our production ecosystem. We firmly believe in the extraordinary power of coming together and fighting against a situation. In these challenging times, it is extremely critical for India Inc to  come together and support the national level initiative undertaken by prime minister Narendra Modi.”

The collective strength of all verticals of the company, including its television channels, digital platforms and social media platforms, will be leveraged to urge people across the globe to join this movement. Being a responsible brand, ZEEL, in order to keep its consumers informed and sensitized about the safety and precautionary measures, had implemented a first-of-its-kind initiative, titled #BreakTheCoronaOutbreak.

Goenka further said, “Apart from the financial support, we will also contribute in creating nationwide awareness about the noble initiative. Leveraging our strong reach across the nation and world at large, we are urging our esteemed viewers to join this movement. This is a time where the entire nation needs to come together as one family.”

Under this initiative, content across 40+ channels was paused for a 30-second break throughout the day, encouraging viewers to wash their hands. In line with the decision undertaken by Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), television channel Zee Anmol was made available free of cost to all viewers across all DTH platforms and cable TV networks for a period of two months.

On the digital side, ZEE5 ensured that the internet bandwidth across the country was optimised by replacing high definition (HD) content to standard definition (SD) content. It also ensured that the viewers remained calm and composed during the lockdown phase with its #BeCalmBeEntertained initiative.

Weta Digital’s ‘Gemini Man’ VFX sizzle reel reveals how they de-aged Will Smith

One of the recurrent praises among many that Gemini Man received have been with regards to the visual effects used to de-age Will Smith. The team behind this amazing technological feat in visual effects has touted the fact that they didn’t simply de-age Will Smith’s face, but instead, they created a digital double of young Will Smith that was informed by a comprehensive motion-capture performance.

A motion-capture performance is done either on set or in a soundstage created for motion capture, and the actor is replaced with a digital model.

Virtual Production has now allowed filmmakers to see a rough version of what the shot will look like in the monitor while cameras are rolling.

Here’s what Weta Digital shared, “Gemini Man broke new ground with digital human work. Technological innovation, experimentation, and collaboration enabled our VFX team to deliver director Ang Lee’s vision. See how we brought Junior to life in this VFX sizzle reel.”

Will Smith’s face is only being used as a reference for the digital model. When Will Smith was on set with a motion-capture camera strapped on his head and dots on his face, he was replaced with a digital model of young Will Smith.

Director Ang Lee has been tinkering with VFX on film but Lee’s preoccupation with the technology may have kept him from paying attention on the storyline.

Gemini Man is an innovative action-thriller starring Will Smith as Henry Brogan, an elite assassin, who is suddenly targeted and pursued by a mysterious young operative that seemingly can predict his every move.

The film is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee and produced by renown producers Jerry Bruckheimer, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger.

Nevertheless, the technology did open up gateways of possibilities in the future.

Covid-19 outbreak: Annecy International Animation Film Festival has been cancelled, online edition in works

As the world combats the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdowns are being put in place throughout. With multiple events being cancelled, postponed or going digital, one of the biggest and well known animation film festivals of the world is also getting cancelled.

While multiple other noted events across the ecosystem were cancelled in the recent past owing to the spread of Coronavirus, the news regarding the cancellation of the 60th edition of Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market came today.

However, an online edition of the event is in works, the details of which will be announced soon while the official selection will be announced on 15 April.

The initial excerpt of the message sent out by the management of the festival read,

Dear friends of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market,

It is with tremendous disappointment that we are resigned to cancelling the Annecy 2020 edition.

Over the past few weeks, driven by our passion and our enthusiasm, despite the confinement constraints we were nevertheless hoping to maintain the exceptional edition that we had in store for you. We were so looking forward to greeting you as we do every year in June, in Annecy, the animation film capital of the world.

But today, the rationale and the international situation compel us to act with lucidity and responsibility. To show our respect and our deep gratitude to the health care providers, as well as all those who choose solidarity and the public interest.

Annecy is a party, a “family gathering”. We cannot bring ourselves to celebrate animation and our 60th
anniversary when some amongst you would not be able to attend.”

The option to move the festival to a later date was not feasible for the organisers as necessary facilities, the regular events calendar and other schedules of already postponed events were hindrances.

However, as with other festivals, an online edition of the 2020 edition is in works, says the official post, “For several weeks, our founding members, partners, suppliers, professionals and creators have been sending us their full support, and for this we are immensely grateful. These encouragements motivate us to offering an Annecy 2020 online version that would give access to exclusive works and original content, despite the current circumstances.”

As mentioned above the official selection will be announced on 15 April followed by the reveal of an offer that will be”elaborate and up to the expectations” of the festival goers and Mifa professionals.

The statement concludes with, “The team is mobilised on this project, so see you in the forthcoming days, and from 14 to 19 June 2021 to finally celebrate, as it should be, the festival’s 60th anniversary, and African animation, in Annecy.”

The note was signed by CITIA chairman Dominique Puthod, CITIA CEO Mickaël Marin, Artistic Director Marcel jean and The Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market team.

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival is frequented by noted professionals from across the ecosystem and the globe. Last year Vaibhav Studios’ slapstick comedy, Lamput, had earned a place at the festival to be the only invited Indian animated IP.

#WhenAtHome: Pixar animated shorts to make you feel better during this lockdown

For the ardent Disney fans in India, this 21-day lockdown has become bearable as Disney+ launched in the country through OTT platform Hotstar on 3 April. The launch was a much awaited one, which brought with it the access to the rich and humongous library of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, National Geographic and Star Wars franchises.

Most people in the country are working from home, balancing between family time and work productivity. “Par Break toh banta hai na?” Well, to make your short break in between worthwhile and provide temporary relaxation, we have listed a few adorable animated Pixar shorts to make you smile amidst this crisis situation.

Purl (2018)

Directed and co-written by Kristen Lester and produced by Pixar Animation Studios, Purl is the first short released as part of Pixar’s SparkShorts programme in 2018. [SparkShorts is a series of independent animated short films produced by Pixar Animation Studios. It consists of a programme in which Pixar’s employees were given six months and limited budgets to develop animated short films to be released on Pixar’s YouTube channel, before being subsequently released on Disney+]

The story focuses on a ball of yarn named Purl, who gets employed in a male-dominant company, which causes her to be ignored by her fellow employees. She tries hard to fit only to eventually realise that it won’t work out in the long run. The animated short also focuses on gender dynamics and gender equality at any workplace.

Besides Lester, Purl is penned by Michael Daley, Bradley Furnish and James Robertson. It was published on YouTube in February 2019 before making it to Disney+.

Time : 8 minutes 43 seconds

Loop (2020)

Float (2019)

What do you do when you find your child to be unusual and born with a gift? Well, to find an answer, you must give Float a watch. Again a SparkShorts animated short, Float focuses on a father’s attempt to hide his gifted son from the world. But how long?

Wind (2019)

Released on Disney+ in December 2019, Wind revolves around a boy and his grandmother who are finding out ways to escape an endless chasm where they’re mysteriously stuck in.

Kitbull (2019)

Kitbull was one of the first three shorts to be released under the SparkShorts programme. It was the third film after Purl and Smash and Grab. This traditionally animated short follows an unlikely relationship between a stray kitty and an abused pitbull.

Directed and written by Rosana Sullivan, Kitbull originated from her enjoyment of viewing cat videos. Critics praised the story, emotional tone, themes, characterisation, and animation. Kitbull was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Like Purl, it was also released on YouTube (February 2019) before Disney+ (November 2019).

Time : 9 minutes

Where to watch : YouTube and Disney+Hotstar

Smash and Grab (2019)

Second film of the short programme at Pixar, Smash and Grab, focuses on two robots, Smash and Grab, living on a futuristic Mars-like planet, and have spent all of their lives working in a futuristic steam train fueled by glowing rocks.  But when they discover a world outside it, they try to escape from their monotonous work routine.

The animated short first premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in January 2019, before being released on YouTube in February, 2019, eventually releasing on Disney+ in November 2019.

Time : 8 minutes

Where to watch : YouTube and Disney+Hotstar

Bao (2018)

Bao

This Oscar winning animated film (91st Academy Awards) is a heart-warming one and the only film in this list which is not part of the SparkShorts programme.

Bao is about an aging and lonely Chinese-Canadian mother, suffering from ‘empty nest syndrome’, who chances upon an unexpected second chance at motherhood when she makes a steamed bun (baozi) that comes to life.

She becomes overprotective and obsessed about his bao-child only to find him moving out with its fiancee. She gulps him up to stop him from leaving. What happens next, will surely melt any heart.

Bao acts as a story about food and family and how the two come together to form a “potent emotional resonance”.

Time : 10 minutes

Where to watch : YouTube and Disney+Hotstar

We hope you enjoy these until we return with another list! Till then stay safe and stay home.
