How real-time and VFX are meeting up (in fact, they’ve already met)

For Cartoon Brew, I talked to Epic Games CTO Kim Libreri about the intersection of VFX and real-time rendering. All these areas have been slowly converging for several years, so it’s fascinating to see where things are up to.

UnderDOGS Gaming Studio collaborates with Eros Now for ‘Shubh Mangal Savdhan’ game

The trend of creating gaming IPs from Bollywood projects seems to have made its impact quite well. Almost every other Bollywood title now comes with a mobile game and given the Smartphone penetration in India, it isn’t a surprise. A game based on the movie, dotted by its characters act as a more immersive and engaging marketing tool as a part of the film promotion.

Another movie is joining the list of the same genre. Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar’s upcoming flick, ‘Shubh Mangal Savdhan’ has a game to its name now. Created by Mumbai-based UnderDOGS Gaming Studio, it is a match 3 puzzle adventure where you help Mudit and Sugandha (characters from the film) get hitched. You can play around matching various fun Indian wedding elements like laddoos, rings, flowers, fire etc. The objective is to convince each family member from both the bride and groom’s side to make the wedding possible.

Speaking to AnimationXpress, UnderDOGS Gaming Studio CEO Vaibhav Chavan said, “Working with Eros Now has been a great experience, we’ve not only developed the game but also helped in the promotion. We have worked on the marketing assets and made them as filmy as possible, we’ve also worked in sync with the team at Eros Now to come up with marketing schemes that help promote the game.”

There is always an issue with a movie-based game, as soon as the hype of the film settles down, the players abandon the game. In this case, the studio plans to release two more updates for the game, for now.

The monetisation model seems pretty simple with full-time banner ads and there are also integrated rewarded video ads in some places. As Chavan said, “we have avoided using forced ads to give the players a comfortable experience.”

Created with Unity, the game was brought to life with a small team of four people, which consisted of one developer, two Artists and a level designer.

The film’s title will definitely assist in getting more downloads for the game, but it is a challenge for the studio to keep its audience hooked if they see it as a long term project.

The studio is currently working on their exploration-based PC game, Mukti.

The Shubh Mangal Savdhan game is out over Android and iOS, while the movie is set to release this Friday, 1 September.

India’s First Science fiction short film ‘Carbon’ is a rebel!

Global warming is a universal fact. But hardly have we seen a movie being spun around the issue. Yes, we can call this film and its VFX a rebel! Maitrey Bajpai and Ramiz Ilham Khan’s Carbon did, and took the digital space by storm.

A short film clocking at 25 minutes , the Jackky Bhagnani-starrer was released on August 28, 2017 in YouTube by Royal Stag Large Short Films. The movie garnered almost six million views already, and is flooded with appreciative feedbacks.

Animation Xpress caught up with Futureworks VFX supervisor Vinay Chuphal, who takes us behind the scenes and talks about the ideation process, the visual effects and a lot more about Carbon!

Futureworks VFX Supervisor Vinay Singh Chuphal

How did you go about the creative aspect of the film? Could also describe the plot of it?

I had a meeting with the director and the whole direction team, and in that itself we decided how will it look. Unlike the size of the buildings today, the buildings 50 years from now, how more number of people with migrate to city, the pollution that it will produce subsequently, and on the basis of certain sci-fi movies we got references. The movie is based in Delhi as there was a pollution issue last year. We eventually decided on making high-rise buildings with more than 100 storey in it, then made the city with CG.

Then there’s a sequence where Jackky goes to meet Nawaz who comes from Mars. Here, only the rich people have shifted to Mars to live. And they are coming down to earth to get pure oxygen. However in the conversation between Nawaz and Jackky, the former explains him how the ancestors are responsible for the mess. Also, the government is supplying impure oxygen whilst the water control too is in their hands. So despite hailing from the affluent class, people from Mars descend down on Earth for oxygen as the production is done here itself.

How did you create the futuristic buildings?

It’s a mix of today’s as well as the buildings of the future. The notion was that the buildings of the future will be built on the top of what is already existing.

Will we get to see something out of the box?

We definitely tried to do that. However we would get little time during the post production.

Was any particular software or technology used for the VFX of the movie?

Maya is the main software for 3D, which is also the most commonly used software today; composting was done on Nuke.

Have you used motion capture in the film?

No. It wasn’t required.

What are the interesting VFX sequences according to you?

Since the duration of the movie is as little as 22 minutes, there isn’t much scope for VFX. There’s more of dialogue in the film. Although there are a few scenes that have visual effects such as the factory scene for which we have produced smoke so that it looks polluted.

How big was the VFX team?

It wasn’t too big given the short-film format of the movie. We had four to five working on CGI and another four for compositing.

How many VFX shots in all?

Basically, the entire movie is VFX. The atmospheric feel, the smoke, the settings all involved VFX.

There are also visuals of another planet revolving in the trailer.

Just a few days back India launched a few satellites into space, and now there are thousands of satellites in space in all. So 70 years from now, there might be pollution in outer space as well. We are trying to show how earth is getting surrounded by satellites, and as a result, is infected with dust and smoke.

Can you tell us how did you come up with it?

It’s a full 3D creation and we made 40-50 satellites for it. Then we also did animation and composting for it.

Could tell us about the oxygen masks in the movie?

The masks were real. However, Jackky has an artificial heart in the movie. Due to immense pollution, there are a lot of cases of heart failures and in fact, babies are born with a still heart. Hence the device is used to make it function normally. And VFX is used for all the heart sequences.

Will we get to see any digitally created creatures?

The movie won’t showcase anything as such. It isn’t an alien-based movie.

How were the factories and smoke created?

We set-up the factories, but we artificially created the smoke, dust to give the look and feel of a polluted place.

There are a lot of blue, green and grey colour used in the movie. What is the reason behind it?

We are just showing the whole texture. For example when we go to Kashmir, we see beautiful colours. But when there’s pollution and dust all around you, it looks ugly. So accordingly we coloured the backgrounds.

Futureworks founder and Carbon producer Gautam Gupta too, shares some of his thoughts on Carbon.

How did you visualise the settings of 2067?

It’s quite impossible to imagine how 2067 could be. And the way things have changed since the 90s, the progress that our world has made, has been commendable. So what we did was try to represent our idea through VFX.

Could you tell us about the concept of water in the movie?

There’s a shot in which you see the water is very expensive. There are no ways of storing water. We knew these issues may arise in future, so we created those 2-2.5 litre jars that we normally get, created an electronic lock on it with a beeper, which acts as an alarm system. This was done to show how expensive water gets in that time.

How big was the team, budget?

Being a short film, there are cost constraints, as it is not an all out work. This was a small team, working extra hours, trying not to disturb the core part of Futureworks. This isn’t some best quality work, but to give this new medium some promotion is what we’ve done.

How has the response been?

In such a short span it has already garnered 5.6 millions views, which is much higher than other short films featuring Naseeruddin Shah, Darshan Jariwala etc. I’m not comparing, but the element of VFX, the story and using conflict as environment has really excited people.

We hope more such science fiction films come in the future and up the level of VFX in Indian cinema!

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ pays tribute to Jack Kirby’s centurion birthday with a new poster

Come November, and the God of Thunder will hammer his way into cinemas in what promises to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.

As the promotion wheels of Thor: Ragnarok are gaining more momentum by the day, here’s yet another poster from the makers commercialising the upcoming Marvel epic through a homage to Jack Kirby.

In an effort to remember him on his hundredth birthday, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige tweeted a new, rustic poster of the movie. The captions also read “unabashed love letter to his vision”.

The Marvel legend is credited with creating Thor among many other characters of Marvel comics, and every movie under the banner is nothing short of an ode to him.

The premises of Thor’s third outing – the destruction of his hammer Mjolnir, Asgard’s demolition, Hela’s terror, and of course, Thor vs. Hulk duel – has set the expectations too high. Now all that’s left is to experience the exhilaration in a cinema hall (and in a 3D, maybe?).

Produced by Marvel Studios, Thor: Ragnarok releases on 3 November 2017.

Entertainment One expands pre-school properties ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘PJ Masks’

Entertainment One (eOne) today outlines developments for its preschool properties Peppa Pig and PJ Masks that will see them expand on-air and at retail across Nordic territories. Plus Licens represents the consumer products programmes for both Peppa Pig and PJ Masks and will introduce new categories across the region in 2017 for both properties.

Peppa Pig

Peppa Pig airs across four terrestrial state broadcasters in Norway (NRK), Denmark (DR), Finland (YLE) and Sweden (SVT). A publishing program is established in Finland, Norway, Otava and Gyldendal where Peppa Pig story books and novelty formats are available. In Finland, over 45,000 copies of Peppa Pig books have been sold in just over three years. The first published titles will roll-out in Denmark and Forlaget Alvilda later this year. Additional categories due to launch in the Nordic region from September 2017 include puzzles and games from Clementoni, Amo and Barbo Toys, plastic bead sets from HAMA and nightlights by Bjørna.

PJ Masks

eOne’s preschool superhero property, PJ Masks, launched on TV screens in Sweden on SVT from April 2017 and airs on multiple slots daily. The show is performing exceptionally well on the channel and achieved an 80 percent audience share amongst three to six year olds in its 6:45 am time slot. eOne is bolstering audience reach from September 2017 when new broadcast partner Fox will begin airing series one in Finland.

Entertainment One international licensing head Ami Dieckman said, “We are deeply committed to strengthening the licensing success of Peppa Pigand PJ Masks across Northern Europe and we look forward to working with our partners there to make these beloved preschool properties a big success across the region.”

There has been huge interest in the PJ Masks consumer products program from retailers and licensees and a number of partners are already on board. The brand’s first product line will launch at retail from A/W 2017. Partners include Skybrands for a line of apparel and home textiles, Clementoni for puzzles, Euromic for back to school, Procos for partyware, Stor for tableware, Amscan for Carnival costumes and Bjørna for nightlights. eOne is currently negotiating a publishing deal for books and a standalone magazine in Denmark and Sweden that will be announced imminently.
