Up close with the practical creatures of ‘Alien: Covenant’

xeno head

Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant made heavy use of practical makeup effects, prosthetics and creatures during the filming process. Two creature shops, Creatures Inc. Ltd and Odd Studio combined to make those effects possible, led by creature design supervisor Conor O’Sullivan and creature effects supervisor Adam Johansen.

In this visual behind the scenes look at the practical effects work in the film, Johansen, one of the founders of Odd Studio, breaks down some of the major creature effects, including for the Neomorphs, the Xenormorph, the face huggers and body bursters, various dummies, and the alien lifeforms in David’s lab.

With Black Panther’s teaser, Marvel’s cat is finally out of the bag

An image of Captain America: Civil War took us a little by surprise. The curiosity and excitement only rose tenfold when we saw claw marks on Captain America’s shield. Before this movie, it was a given fact that nothing could happen to the vibranium shield. Things changed when the man in a sexy black suit, Black Panther made his entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yesterday, before launching the first teaser trailer, Marvel unveiled the poster of its 2018 slated standalone film, Black Panther. Though the poster got bashed for its bad edit, the teaser definitely won back the hearts of the Marvel fans. And we must say, you will feel like watching it again and again.

In Civil War, we got the first glimpse of Black Panther wherein he was fighting on the side of Tony Stark as he wanted to avenge his father T’Chaka’s death. It was caused by the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes). After he scratched Captain’s unbreakable shield, there was really nothing left for him to prove his prowess.

As the newly released teaser takes us into the depths of the mysterious place – Wakanda, we are compelled to think about this African nation. And “textiles, shepherds and cool outfits” is definitely not the answer. It is a place that few can visit and fewer can leave. The way in which Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis) introduces Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) to Wakanda is a clear indication that the place holds deeper secrets than the character of Black Panther. Also, there’s the tensed relation between Klaw and T’Challa which has been established in the comicverse that can be seen in the almost two minute clip.

The trailer then goes on to reveal the wonderful and technologically advanced nation of Wakanda. With Andy Serkis’ voice-over throughout the video, it also showcases parts of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) in action, political hassles, novel characters and multiple fantastic locations. T’Challa is the newly crowned prince of Wakanda and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) tries to dethrone him. But there’s more to the story (obviously!).

The film also stars Daniel Kaluuya, Florence Kasumba, Angela Bassett, The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

There is not much that T’Challa speaks in Civil War, but he says this to Helmut Zoro, “Vengeance has consumed you. It’s consuming them (The Avengers). I am done letting it consume me.” Almost drastically, we see the flip side of him and know that the character is more than cool suit, virtue and customs. The lesser he gives away, the more intriguing he gets.

Throughout the clip, we can observe sequences like the waterfall shot, aerial look at Wakanda, flying jets, and action sequences which seem like the work of VFX. The production VFX supervisor is Geoffrey Baumann and the visual effects for this movie is being provided by Industrial Light & Magic (VFX supervisor: Craig Hammack), Luma Pictures and Scanline VFX.

Black Panther opens a whole new fascinating world inside the MCU. The trailer gives the promise of an enthralling movie experience which seems to be totally different from the previous Marvel movies.

Produced by Kevin Feige and directed by Ryan Coogler, the film arrives on 16 February, 2018. Patience…

Apparent release date of next Assassin’s Creed is out after a string of leaks

With E3 right around the corner, fans are looking forward to numerous announcements from their favourite developers. While the schedules are packed for the next few days, a leak of one of the most anticipated game has apparently revealed the release date.

The upcoming edition from Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed has been the subject of multiple leaks. Firstly, it was revealed that the game’s setting would be in Egypt and that there will be another playable character apart from the protagonist himself.

The most recent leak however sheds light on the release date of the game and further confirms an earlier leak that the game will be indeed called Assassin’s Creed Origins. A Redditor posted an image of the latest copy of GameInformer on Imgur, which shows the ‘Assassin’ standing atop the Great Sphinx of Giza with the release date stated as 27 October, 2017.

The caption reads, “As an empire falls, a brotherhood rises”. According to the leak, the game will be set during the rise and rule of Cleopatra coupled with new gear and leveling systems.

Ubisoft had assured more information about the upcoming title during E3. Although, nothing has been officially confirmed by Ubisoft, the game has been subjected to a surprising number of leaks and things seem to fall in accord.  We’ll have to wait for Ubisoft’s announcements during E3.

However, there’s no denying that this stands out as one of the titles subjected to a lot of leaks even before its announcement, let alone release.

The enchanting trailer of ‘Mary and the Witch’s Flower’ teases its theme song ‘Rain’

Japanese anime fantasy film, Mary and the Witch’s Flower released its third trailer showing  the magic inside the movie’s new world. It seems to be inspired by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s unique style.

This is the solo project done by director Hiromasa Yonebayashi who used to previously work at Studio Ghibli.

Yonebayashi is best known for his directorial work on The Secret World of Arrietty and When Marnie Was There. He left Studio Ghibli around the end of 2014.

For this film, he has teamed up with his ex-colleague from Ghibli, that is producer Yoshiaki Nishimura. Studio Ponoc is Nishimura’s new production company.

The brand new trailer contains the film’s theme song ‘Rain’ which has been done by the Japanese musical group, Sekai No Owari. The trailer also showcases the enchanting world of the film in a beautiful manner.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower is based on a British children novel, ‘The Little Broomstick’ written by Mary Stewart. It is quite a different approach from the Japanese filmmakers who usually  follow the conventional route of adapting a film from a manga.

The movie narrates the tale of a young girl named Mary who discovers that she has a mysterious power to become a witch, which lasts for one night only. She undergoes a whole new adventure after her discovery which unfolds the story henceforth.

There are other interesting characters like Tib – the black cat, Miss Mumblechook (voiced by Yuuki Amami), Doctor Dee (Fumiyo Kohinata), Peter, Madame Mumble (Yūki Amami), Red Headed Witch (Hikari Mitsushima), Flanagan (Jiro Sato).

The main voice cast and staff has also been announced for the film and the list is impressive. Japanese actress Hana Sugisaki has given the voiceover for Mary while Japanese actor Ryunosuke Kamiki has lent his voice for the character of Peter.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower is slated to release on 8 July, 2017. It’s being distributed by Toho.

How to Have a Good Conversation

We too often imagine that ‘good conversations’ are things we fall into out of luck. Far from it, knowing how to have a good conversation is a skill that can be learnt – and here are the beginning of the rules. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/wubZTC

“Having a decent conversation is something most of us imagine we can do without any problem – and certainly without much thought. These things just happen naturally. Don’t they?
But in truth, truly good conversations come along very rarely; largely because our societies fall for the Romantic myth that knowing how to talk to other people is something we are born knowing how to do, rather than an art dependent on a little planning and a few skills. We rightly accept that total improvisation in preparing a meal is unlikely to yield good outcomes; but we show no such caution or modesty when it comes to how we might talk over the food once it has been made. Finding oneself in a good conversation can feel as haphazard and random as stumbling on a beautiful square in a foreign city at night – and realising one won’t reliably know how to get back there in daytime.”
