Norway – The Lofoten Islands

For a place as far north as Alaska and Siberia, cold and unpredictable weather comes with the territory. Last March, I spent 6 days in Lofoten Islands. it was incredible! From snow storms to strong wind that literally pushed me couple of times, to beautiful sunny skies, not to mention the mesmerizing moment under the northern lights and of course Lofoten’s distinctive scenery and dramatic mountains and peaks. This is a short movie of my vacation there I hope you like it and thanks for watching! 🙂 Gear: -Canon 6D -Canon 24-105mm f/4 L -Sigma 35 mm 1.4 ART -3 shots using Radian2 and SliderFX studio -Vanguard VEO 265CB Carbon Fiber Tripod

An extended Baahubali universe on your mobile screens: From inception to conclusion of ‘Baahubali: The Game’ by Moonfrog Labs

The Baahubali franchise recently set really high standards for Indian cinema. Smashing box office records and being the talk of the town throughout the country and overseas, S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus created an entire ecosystem out of the IP. Apart from comics, an animated show and a VR experience, Baahubali also has a game to its name.

Developed by Bangalore based Moonfrog Labs, the RTS (Real time strategy) game gives an extended experience into the Baahubali universe to the seekers of a more interactive experience.

Released in four languages Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu back in April, the game lets the player play as ‘Senapatis’ (generals or commanders) who serve the kingdom of Mahishmati, train an army, build defences and join forces with Baahubali, Kattappa and the other heroes of Mahishmati to push back the ruthless. The game gives Baahubali fans a new entry point into the film’s universe as a player, where they can experience the challenge of being a general with the command of an army. The game features digital versions of Baahubali, Kattappa, Bhallal Dev and the other heroes of Mahishmati, who the players can include in their army. The end goal is for the player to prove their skills by building the strongest army, the best defended Rajya (outpost), and a working economy with food and gold to protect the kingdom of Mahishmati from the Kalakeya.

Speaking to Animationxpress, Moonfrog Labs director and board member Mark Skaggs said, “Much of the fun and action in the film is battles and combat. The big battle in the first movie. We know that people like the troops and the battles from the first film so a real time strategy game made total sense in our minds.”

Mark Skaggs has credits for hit titles like FarmVille, Empire & Allies, CityVille, Treasure Isle, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth and Command & Conquer Generals to his name.

Apparently,  Graphic India CEO Sharad Devarajan and Moonfrog co-founder and director Tanay Tayalat  had been discussing about making games out of some of Graphic India’s properties when Baahubali 2 came up. Both Devarajan and Tayal were excited by the idea of making a game for Baahubali 2. The concept was discussed internally at Moonfrog along with Mark Skaggs and they came up with the current concept of making a war strategy game around the Baahubali universe.

That’s when Moonfrog and Graphic India got Arka Mediaworks and director SS Rajamouli involved in the conversations.

According to Skaggs, the focus was on ‘Made in India, for India, by India’ and thus bringing local elements to the game was of utmost importance and thus a lot of brainstorming was done to achieve the current state of the game. As he puts it:

Vision

The target for the team was very clear. The game had to be made for the Indian market, for the Indian smartphone user. The Baahubali franchise has found fandom across the diversity of India so the game had to be released in regional languages as well. Today, we have over 5 million downloads and a large number of players are heavily engaged with the game. A lot of people play the game in Tamil and Telugu and write to us or leave comments appreciating the work. For Moonfrog, it’s very gratifying to see players find value in the localisation we put in.

Collectively, as a team, we’ve worked on many games for various markets across the world. It is immensely gratifying to design and develop a product for India, our own country, and even more so when we get a positive response from our Indian playerbase.

Challenges

When developing the game, the biggest challenges we faced were getting the art and technology right for a game of this scale, for a massive smartphone market like India. We had to design a game that would work seamlessly across various data networks, on the hundreds of smartphone brands and models without any errors or glitches. We also can’t have a large file size for downloads and updates because players playing the game on 2G networks will face problems.

For the game, we are using the ‘Nova Engine’ — a proprietary Moonfrog technology engine that lets us develop strategy games of this scale while keeping the file size as low as 24MB. To give you a sense of scale for a low-end phone, the entire Mahishmati kingdom will have the file size of 4 Bollywood MP3s.

For art, the additional challenge was to translate the epicness of the Baahubali universe onto the small phone screen. From the geography of the fictional kingdom of Mahishmati to the war units and popular characters like Baahubali, Bhallaladeva, Devasena and Kattappa, everything had to be designed in a way that it would animate perfectly no matter what phone you were using without losing the intricacy of the art style used in the movie.

Intensive research:

We started by watching the movie over a 100 times. Our artists and designers with the help from Graphics India and Arka Mediaworks did a lot of research on the historical elements as depicted in the film and the possibilities of what could have been 2000 years ago. We studied the movies to understand SS Rajamouli’s vision — to understand the nuances that don’t betray the original aesthetics of the film like iconography, colours, architectural and sartorial styles and even some gaming elements. For example, the idea of a gold mine came from a scene in the first movie where soldiers were collecting gold from the people to make a statue.

The first step in developing the Indian-ness as an essential aspect of the art, the user experience, the music and other elements is designing the concept art. We were more than happy to have Aditya Chari (who had worked on the original characters in Baahubali 1) on our team, who helmed the concept art development. The concept art was then honed based on feedback from Graphic India and Arka Mediaworks. That is when the rest of the team stepped in and we went into full-production mode.

“Today, we can proudly say that our team has overcome these challenges with style and has created a product that will enhance the epic experience of Baahubali for every Indian and international user,” exulted Skaggs.

The game is built on a freemium model which means it is free to play but sports in-app purchases which is the studio’s preferred way to monetize the game, just like they did with their other famed IP, Teen Patti Gold. As it is an RTS game, basically you don’t just start and finish the game, it is a virtual world which keeps on getting additions and you play along while fortifying your defenses and furthering your forces to stay on top.

The game is doing pretty well as it is still one of the top 10 most downloaded game in the country. The studio is further pushing out updates on a weekly basis to keep the game fresh. When asked about how long they plan to support the game, they said ‘for the foreseeable future’.

Having worked on a mega franchise like Baahubali, the Bangalore-based studio might be planning to or already might have grabbed other offers, however they refrained on revealing any future plans for now.

A ghost in the jungle : Fenil Sherdiwala announces India’s first superhero web series ‘Vetaal’

As the web series concept in India gathers momentum, Fenil comics are set to bring a new dimension to it. They are launching India’s first ever webseries based on a comics superhero. It is a suspense thriller superhero series named ‘Vetaal’. The series is based on the mythological character of the same name however it has been adapted keeping the current generation in mind.

Fenil Sherdiwala, the writer of the series, aims to ambush the hegemony which the superhero characters of the West have held in this domain. He wishes to create the trend of screen adaptation of comics followed by the likes of Batman,Superman,Spiderman. In our exclusive interview, the ever energetic and creative, Fenil Sherdiwala gave us a gist of the show and what the audience can expect from India’s first superhero-based web series, Vetaal.

Can you brief us about the plot of ‘Vetaal’?

Vetaal is Fenil Comics’ horror story. Unlike the superheroes we have seen in Marvel and DC comics, we have used Indian mythology as our base and developed the superhero. It is a horror story but not set in the conventional way. It has an element of suspense to it to keep the audience hooked.

What is your inspiration behind creating the Vetaal character?

When you use the word “horror”, a ghost is the first thing that strikes our mind. However, I researched to find out that the Sanskrit equivalent of ghost is Vetaal. And having watched a lot of horror stories before, I wanted to bring a new angle to the horror segment altogether.

You are the writer of this series whilst also playing the lead. Is this your first time you are appearing in a central role?

Yes, this is the first time I am playing a lead. However, as a supporting cast, I’ve done two 70mm movies which will be released later this year.

What compelled you take up the lead role?

Actually my team itself asked me to do the lead role as they felt I can do justice to it. Then when I auditioned for the role, the audition team were unanimous in their vote to cast me as Vetaal.

How many episodes have you shot thus far?

Till now, we have finished shooting for the first episode only and it is being edited right now. We have scheduled the shoot for the second episode on 1 July, 2017.

How has been your experience  till now ?

It has been a time consuming process. We required 35 VFX shots to finish the first episode. Lightening and stuff is a time consuming process in the VFX pipeline. So it took a lot of time. However, it has been above satisfactory so far.

When are you planning to launch the web series? And when will its trailer be out?

We are planning to launch it this Diwali, whereas the trailer will be out one month before that. We will release a teaser first and then the trailer.

What is so special about Ahwa and Dang that you chose to shoot some your scenes there? What is the main location of your shooting?

It has some dense jungle which gives a scenery that is quite similar to our actual location which is Purna wildlife sanctuary. It meets all our requirements and also I visit it quite often.

Any challenges you faced while shooting at those locations?

Yes, there were a lot of power shortages. Whenever we reached late, we had problems in setting things up.

Who are the other major characters we will get to see in this series?

The series comprises of two main characters – Suraj and Kiran. But since this is a suspense show, so I can’t really disclose anything much about them.

How did you go about the casting?

We roped in a few actors from the Gujarati film industry, whilst we also had contacts with a few others in the industry who have played a few roles before. So we hired them as well.

How big is your team right now?

The lead team has only four people since the story revolves around those four. But talking  about our technical team, it has eight members in it and a separate supporting team as well.

On what budget is this series being made?

Our budget is very shoestring, although we haven’t calculated the exact figures.

How do you think will the current generation connect with it?

The current generation loves to enjoy new concepts and prefers watching webseries these days.Fenil Comics already has a large fanbase, so they are apprised with our web series and are anxiously awaiting its launch. And as you know US, UK are already well versed with web series so we expect our show to get covered in their news stories. We also intend to broadcast it to as many as 45 countries.

India’s attempt at birthing its own version of a superhero thus far has not been very promising. For example, the movie A Flying Jatt was a debacle. How do you think the superhero concept of Vetaal will be able to break that trend?

Firstly, they were movies. Movies are a one time thing. People watch it and then forget it. Movies like Krish, Flying Jatt are not adapted from any comics. However in a series like ours, every episode has a suspense building up to its climax which will be revealed only in the following episode. This keeps the audience hooked to our show. Also, Vetaal is India’s first web series based on a superhero.

Do you plan to make a sequel in future?

Although season two is under consideration, we would first see how the maiden season goes and only then go ahead with its production.

Animationxpress wishes Fenil Sherdiwala and his whole team of Vetaal a great success. We hope it creates new trends in the comics and live action field. Stay in touch with us for more updates about the Vetaal series!

‘Spider-Man Homecoming’ : Bewitching trivias you must know ahead of its release

In one of the most awaited movie of the year, the webslinger is all set to glide through the blue skies once again as Marvel’s Spider-Man : Homecoming is fast approaching its release on 7 July, 2017 in India and 6 July worldwide.

After a three year hiatus and the chaos in the MCU following the debacle of The Amazing Spiderman 2, the American media franchise is on the cusp of unleashing a renewed and revamped version of the wall-crawler which has already garnered astronomical hype.

As we look forward to its release with bated breath, here are a few interesting trivialities to deliberate about.

No Harry, no Mary Jane: Peter’s got a new bunch of company!

Although Harry Osborne and Mary Jane Watson were just as much a profound presence in the Spiderman movies and comics as Peter himself, the upcoming Spiderman flick is all set to bid adieu to the old companions of the superhero as he finds newer allies in the movie.

Even though the subplot remains more or less the same with Parker having one close friend in college, a love interest he tries to pursue and one arch-rival in college to have skirmishes with, the latest Spiderman flick to set to feature the characters such as Jacon Batalon, Zendaya, Laura Harrier et al, which hasn’t previously been heard of.

New beginning, new friends!

Michael Keaton goes from a bat to a vulture

Veteran actor Michael Keaton is all set to levitate in mid air once again as he plays the villainous character of Vulture, twenty-five years after playing Batman in Tim Burton’s movies.

The 65-year old superstar holds the distinction of being one of the very few actors to have crossed over from DC to Marvel, but fans are more excited to see him play a baddie after watching him save the city as a Dark Knight.

First appearing in Burton’s Batman followed by its sequel Batman Returns, Keaton is now set to bring the character of vulture to life, one of the few unexplored members of the ‘Sigma Six’.

The famous spider bite scene to be chalked off

The Spider-man: Homecoming movie is to be carried on from the events of Captain America: Civil War. This means the origination of Spiderman after Parker gets bit by a radio-active spider in a laboratory full of such arachnids as projected in the previous franchises, won’t be discussed here.

As director Jon Watts said, “We never talked about showing it because the MO was always not to show anything that we’ve seen before.”  Resultantly, even Uncle Ben and his death aren’t covered in the movie.

Industrial Light and Magic join Sony Pictures Imageworks for the movie’s VFX

Apart from being the first independent movie in the Spiderman history, this would also mark the first Spiderman film to have the VFX not centrally controlled by Sony Pictures Imageworks.

The Sony visual effects company called the shots in the VFX department in all of Spidey’s movies, but this time, another venerable visual effects company Industrial Light and Magic weighed in.

The California-based motion pictures VFX group have numerous movies under their belt, some of the prominent ones being The Godfather Part III, Indiana Jones, the Star Trek franchise, and all the latest from MCU.

A sequel has been already announced

Sony Pictures was so impressed with the reaction to the trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, they immediately confirmed a sequel to be released July 5, 2019. It sounds like there could be even more Spidey movies in the works following that, too, with Marvel president Kevin Feige telling Comic-Con 2016 the plan was to follow the formula of the Harry Potter franchise and show Peter Parker in a different year of high school with each one.

Spider-Man: Homecoming fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

This Spider-Man film will be the first to directly tie in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The storyline is intended to follow the events of Captain America: Civil War. While Marvel movies generally are set in the same time as they are released, Spider-Man: Homecoming will buck that trend by taking place just a few months after Civil War.
