Take a listen to Hip Hop, Trap, Pop, EDM, or just about any other genre these days and you’ll hear the distinct tones of the “808 Bass” – a term used to describe tuned and pitched sub-bass lines whose origins come from a classic drum machine, not a bass synth. But as standard as the 808 Bass is, the way everyone makes them these days is not quite as standard. That’s one reason why 808 Bass sounds and bass lines are something of a mystery for aspiring producers and beat makers.
In part one of a two part series, we take a look at the origins of the 808 Bass and the philosophy that goes into creating custom patches and writing 808 bass lines.

A pop song issued by Edison Records in 1909 as an Amberol cylinder. Video features vintage Kodak-related pictures and drawings from around 1909.
Edison Phonograph Monthly described this record as “A love ballad by still another singer who now enters the ranks of Edison artists. Mr. Wells is well known in New York and vicinity. He has a fine tenor voice, has sung in some of the best metropolitan church choirs and his name frequently appears on the best concert programmes. The song is the one introduced in the comedy, “Love Watches,” and sung with great success by Billie Burke. Its composer, Will R. Anderson, also wrote “Just Some One” (our Record No. 9847).”

More classic late-1950s/early-1960s commercials for the breakfast cereal Alpha-Bits. Some of these had previously appeared in my “extant products” series, but not all. I admit I stole these ads from the “adviews” section of the Internet Archive.

This is the first video in my “Recreated” playlist, where I recreate drinks from TV shows or movies. Here we’re recreating the Flaming Homer, Skittlebräu, and one that I really don’t recommend.
Want to see more of these types of videos? Let me know in the comments, and feel free to make suggestions for future recreations.
