Samsung – Surf – The Snail

Every living being on this planet has a need to connect with something greater than itself. From the tiniest snail attempting to cross a vast and unpredictable sidewalk, to each surfer ignoring their own fragile ‘shells’ every time they paddle out into the awesome power of the ocean.

Samsung believes it’s this basic need that leads to progress, and that progress always leads to more progress. As sponsor of the WSL World Championship Tour, Samsung has continually witnessed the world’s best surfers push their limits and in the process, spread the love of the sport to new and unexpected parts of the world.

In ‘Snail,’ we watch as a young boy in India pushes beyond both his physical and cultural limitations to connect with a world of surfing he’s only seen on his phone.

Come celebrate with Samsung.
Proud sponsor of those who defy barriers.

Stan Lee collaborates with India’s Digitales Studios and illustrator Saumin Patel for his new animated series

Stan Lee, the comic world legend with whom anyone would want to get associated, recently collaborated with the Indian animation studio, Digitales Studios and illustrator Saumin Patel for his new animated series Stan Lee’s Cosmic Crusaders. Virtual reality company Legend VR has joined forces with Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment to create virtual reality episodes for this new adult animated series which is available on Hindsight VR application.

The series has been produced for The Hollywood Reporter and, Digitales Studios can’t stop being proud about it as they got the opportunity to work with not just Stan Lee but also the great illustrator behind Bhansali Films/Eros’ Blazing Bajirao animated webseries, Saumin Patel (Small Town Boys). Patel serves as the creative art director whereas Digitales Studios’ R.K. Chand serves as the studio producer for the motion comics and animation services for Cosmic Crusaders.

The adult animated series, co-produced with Genius Brands International and written by ‘Deadpool’ co-creator Fabian Nicieza based on a concept by Lee, marks the first show to debut on THR.com, with the premiere episode in virtual reality.

“I can’t wait for everyone to see what the wizards at Legend 3D have created for our new series Cosmic Crusaders!,” says Lee of the experience. “Turning me into virtual reality, wow, what will they think of next! This is truly a unique experience for both me and comic book fans, you won’t want to miss this!”

“It was an amazing opportunity for us and our clients were really happy with what the final piece turned out to be given the tight deadline and Cross Atlantic teams working together with Saumin Patel leading the team in Mumbai. Looking forward to more unique collaborations like this in the future,” comments Digitales Studios, director of business development, R.K. Chand.

Right from the world class art direction by Saumin Patel to the final motion comics and animation services carried out by Digitales Studios which was then incorporated by VP of production at Legend VR, Will Maurer and his team into a unique VR experience for the THR’s special salute ‘Stan Lee: 75 Years in the Business’ was executed right from India itself. Producer Dane Allan Smith oversaw the production from Los Angeles.

Cosmic Crusaders needed an art style which is dynamic yet could emote the humour embedded in the series writing. We didn’t want to make it very dark by using hard black shadows with stark lighting. So we chose to play a bit with more dynamic angles and art style that was more closer to comic/anime art,” mentions Patel. “While planning for art we had to keep in mind the aspect of how it would be taken forward for animation. Our team was able to propose an art style that was more animation friendly and also slightly different than the conventional comics or animation art styles we get to see around. With crucial inputs from the client, art was improvised and it ended up in a stark and slightly darker art style finally which we were happy about.”

So far four episodes have been released on the application wherein one can observe Stan Lee sitting in his living room and marveling at his recent work.

Toronto’s animation and VFX studio, Arc Productions declares bankruptcy

As we observe VFX and animation studios springing up or expanding its branches, there’s an of melancholy in one of the leading Canadian animation and visual effects studio. As reported by CartoonBrew, the studio behind LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Avengers Reassembled!, Elena of Avalor, Robosapien: Rebooted, Arc Productions is permanently shutting down.

“We regret to inform you that Arc is experiencing significant financial difficulties and a liquidity crisis,” CEO, Tom Murray wrote to his staff in a letter. “Despite the very best efforts of management to find a solution to this financial emergency, we have not been able to resolve this matter with our lender.”

Arc Productions has shifted hands with many companies over the years. In 2004, USA animation producer IDT Corp. purchased the studio from the founders of DKP Studios and in 2006, Starz Media’s parent company Liberty Media bought IDT Entertainment. Under its new management in 2007, the studio began a “Starz Shortz” program which has produced Bundle of Joy, Enter the Sandbox, and in 2010, the studio opened a major VFX wing to create all the effects for the new Starz Channel/Graham King Productions miniseries, Camelot, Alcon Entertainment’s Dolphin Tale, and producer Avi Arad’s family feature, Robosapien: Rebooted.

In April 2011, finally, the Starz Animation was sold to a Canadian consortium, and renamed itself to Arc Productions. Throughout the years, the company has been awarded tens of millions of dollars in Canadian taxpayer dollars to operate.

Currently, Arc was in production on the feature Blazing Samurai, which is scheduled for release in August 2017 by Open Road Films and so far no word has come regarding what will happen to that project.

It’s unclear what went wrong at Arc, but it’s known that the studio was aggressively expanding its workforce earlier this year, and even unveiled a new logo in April. The first sign that something was wrong was last Friday when employees were told they weren’t being paid because of a “glitch.” Now, according to CEO Tom Murray, the company has no money to pay its artists anymore.

“We are still working diligently to find a solution that will allow us to pay outstanding wages due to you,” Murray wrote, “but, in the event that wages are not paid and the Receiver is appointed, there is a federal government program known as the Wager Earner Protection Program where employees of companies that have gone into receivership may be able to make a claim for unpaid wages, severance and vacation pay.” That program only pays up to $3,900 per individual.

Here is the full text of the letter that Murray sent to employees that explains how the lenders intend to take control of the company’s assets on 4 August.
