DC Comics ‘The Monolith’ to now get a movie treatment

With Suicide Squad, DC Comics opened gates for the lesser known characters from their huge comic library and seems like yet another graphic novel will now be getting a movie treatment. As reported by THR, Lionsgate is developing an adaptation of The Monolith, the graphic novel series by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti.

the monolithThe Monolith centers on Alice Cohen, an ex-junkie who inherits a house in Brooklyn from her deceased grandmother. She discovers a diary there that reveals the creation of a monster in the 1930s set on revenge for the slaying of a good man. Written by Gray and Palmiotti, the 12 issue comic book which were published in 2004 and 2005 ceased publication due to the poor sales.

The film adaptation will be a contemporary retelling of the classic Golem legend, which centers on an artificial creature created by magic. The caped crusader, Batman also had a role in few of the issues in the comic book. So maybe we can expect a cameo of Batman in the movie as well.

The creative director of Deadpool helmer Tim Miller’s production company Blur Studio, Dave Wilson, is set to direct the film. This would be Wilson’s directorial debut project. Under his hood, Wilson has worked on many video games and trailers including Mass Effect 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic and was involved with Avengers: Age of Ultron. He is repped by WME and 3 Arts. Prolific producer and 3 Arts manager Erwin Stoff (13 Hours, Burnt) will be producing the film.

Penning the script for this comic based film would be Barnett Brettler who has written Allan Quatrain.

No release date for The Monolith film has been declared as of now.

DWA’s animated feature ‘The Croods 2’ gets new writers and distributor

DreamWorks Animation’s animated feature film The Croods 2 will be rewritten by Kevin and Dan Hageman. The Hageman brothers are known to have come up with the story for Warner Bros’ blockbuster The Lego Movie and now they will pen the story for this DWA’s sequel project too.

The film was supposed to be released on 22 December, 2017 by 20th Century Fox, but the studio recently put The Story of Ferdin in its place after DWA was sold to NBCUniversal. As The Croods 2 is now no longer under the distribution of 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures will soon announce a release date for the film. The film is expected to release in 2018.

As for the new screenwriters are concerned, the Hageman brothers’ past credits include coming up with stories for The Lego Movie, Hotel Transylvania and the upcoming Lego Ninjago Movie. The writing duo are also working with the director Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix series Trollhunters, the family-friendly event series that’s scheduled for a December streaming.

The Croods 2 is a sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s 2013 film The Croods which grossed $587.2 million worldwide. During that time, it became the second highest-grossing original DWA film behind Kung Fu Panda. Also, it became the highest-grossing 2013 film distributed by 20th Century Fox for that year. So now with 20th Century Fox moving out of the picture, The Croods 2 may have to try its luck at the box office with the new distributor.

Based on the prehistoric animated story of the franchise, a television series titled Dawn of the Croods, aired on 24 December, 2015 on Netflix. With these new writers coming in, we can expect the storyline and the screenplay to undergo changes and emerge with a fresh perspective.
