It isn’t that long ago that the visual effects and animation industries were concentrated mostly in Los Angeles. For lots of reasons (ask me again sometime) the work is now spread throughout the globe.

One outcome of this ‘globalisation’ of VFX and animation is that there’s never been more conferences, events and meet-ups to hear from professionals about the films and projects they’ve worked on. Which means it’s more likely there will be somewhere near you where you can learn about VFX and animation.

But it’s more than that, too.

With so many places – sometimes exotic places – offering VFX and animation events, it also feels like there’s a real opportunity for those interested in working in those fields or who already are, to visit some great locations.

I’ll give you an example. Last year I was able to attend the VIEW Conference in Turin. (Spoiler: I’m going again this year.) It was incredible, and not just for the speakers. Being able to soak up a city I hadn’t been to before, and one as historic as Turin, was actually one of the main highlights.

So, what’s in Turin?

Well, first let’s talk about where Turin is. It’s in the northwest of Italy and is the country’s fourth largest city. It’s probably known mostly as being the home to much of the Italian car industry (FIAT, Lancia and Alfa Romeo). It also hosted the Winter Olympics in 2006.

But what does Turin ‘feel’ like? You know those older European cities where there’s a whole bunch of streets everywhere and down every street is something different? That’s Turin. Half of that is touristy and the other half is…more like typical city and suburban living.

If you’re into tourist things, Turin has all that, as well. There’s the Shroud of Turin, many art galleries and piazzas, and diverse architecture. Actually, there really are a lot of different types of buildings. Outside of the city, the Langhe hills are pretty spectacular. This area was recently proclaimed a UNESCO heritage site.

Hills

OK, so what does all this have to do with a VFX and animation conference? Well, my one big point is that if you’re going to think about a conference to attend, to spend money on and to take off to go to, you may as well go to a great place.

VIEW’s list of speakers this year (something I’ll be posting about next week) is an incredible line up, but if you make it over to Turin, I’m suggesting you also take advantage of this amazing city its surrounds.

I know I will.

A Flying Jatt Review: No superhero can save the flawed VFX in this film

When we hear the words “superhero” and “film”, countless number of movies come gushing to our minds along with expectations. A strong storyline, the plot, characters, music and majorly high end visual effects – all these can be termed as the mantra to make any superhero film successful. So far, the Bollywood industry has witnessed two superhero flicks Ra.One or Krrish, and if not mind blowing they had decent VFX work.

Now, there’s one more superhero film being added in this kitty and that’s ‘A Flying Jatt’. Directed by Remo D’Souza (F.A.L.T.U, ABCD, ABCD 2) A Flying Jatt has been promoted as a kid friendly, comical movie which will have heavy use of VFX to support the Flying Jatt’s and his nemesis Laka’s powers. However, when visual effects which are used to enhance a film starts becoming prominent to the audience’s eyes, it’s safe to say that it’s a bad VFX job done. And the same goes for A Flying Jatt.

From left: Flying Jatt, Raka

From left: Flying Jatt, Raka

The movie starts of with the animated song ‘Chal Chaliye’ showcasing how the cutting of trees leads to the destruction of everything from forests to cities, also setting the plotline for the film as we observe Flying Jatt (Tiger Shroff) saving the tree to resurrect everything. Surely, as promised by Remo D’Souza the movie is filled with comical events and dialogues which don’t seem like forced ones. The plot of the film is quite simple; an industrialist Malhotra’s (Kay Kay Menon) wants to acquire a land which the landlady (Amrita Singh) refuses to give as his factories are the main cause of the growing pollution in the country. This leads to Malhotra resorting to evil methods of trying to capture it by hiring Raka (Nathan Jones) who encounters Aman (Tiger Shroff), the landlady’s son and martial arts teacher.

How Raka and Aman get their powers? They both get struck by lightning and attain different kinds of superpowers. Aman aka Flying Jatt has the power to heal himself, absorb the content of whatever he touches, can fly like Superman, has the superhuman ability to move at great speeds like Quicksilver and has the blessing of the Sikh god. On the other hand, the antagonist Raka is made of pollution and gets his energies from the pollution around him; be it in water, land or air.

Not delving much into the storyline, it’s safe to say that the film has a decent story emphasising on the protecting the environment, which has been brought to life successfully by the actors. Amrita Singh played the role of a strong headed woman and has delivered her role brilliantly. Kay Kay Menon and Gaurav Pandey (Rohit, brother of Aman) also managed to pull off their part, with The Mad Max: Fury Road powerlifting champion and retired wrestler Nathan Jones’ madness as Raka was well executed. Talking about the superhero Tiger Shroff, with his flexible body and his prowess as a dancer, managed to do justice to his role of being a martial arts teacher who is a scared soul in reality. As for Jacqueline Fernandez (Kirti, Aman’s love interest) was just an add-on to the cast.

Flying Jatt space

As for the VFX, being a superhero film, we were expecting visual effects playing a big role in film, however what we didn’t expect was the low quality of it. Seems like the filmmakers failed to learn from the teaser reviews. India’s one of the leading VFX studio Prime Focus has delivered the VFX and DI for the movie.

There were major VFX flaws throughout the film. The scene when Aman and Raka get their superpowers and Raka flies away, the running and flying sequences of Flying Jatt, the breaking of glass, the location seen in the romantic song ‘Toota jo Koi Tara’ all seemed quite artificial. The biggest letdown was the final battle which took place in the space, something which cannot be ignored. Seems like the VFX team forgot to remove the blue chroma screen in one of the office scenes of Malhotra, wherein on one side the blue chroma screen and on the other clouds could be noticed.

Though the film majorly had unacceptable VFX work, there were parts which had been well executed as well. When Raka comes out of the factory waste, the water fight between Flying Jatt and Raka, the black polluted air coming out of Raka’s body, the burning of houses were some of the good VFX parts in the film. One major scene was the first superhero moment of Flying Jatt wherein he goes to fight off against a bunch of terrorists. The scene seemed inspired by the X-Men: Days of Future Past Quicksilver scene wherein Flying Jatt also does few things just like him (let’s remember he was shown all superhero films by his mom and Rohit). Apart from him tasting the milk shot, the rest of the slow motion has been beautifully delivered.

Along with VFX, animation was also used to tell the backstory of Aman’s father and the relation of 12 o’clock with Sikhs. Overall the film has three animated sequences; the Chal Chaliye song in the intro and these two backstories. Unlike the VFX shots, the animated sequences were one of the highlights of the film created using simple 2D stop motion animation.

Whether it was the low VFX budget or time constraint, in this high tech era, the audience are more aware than before and might not accept anything that’s showed to them. If there’s a sequel in talks, we would highly recommend them to give importance to the visual effects and set aside the budget / time accordingly. Directed by Remo D’Souza and produced by Ekta and Shobha Kapoor, A Flying Jatt hits theatres today.

Verdict: When it comes to the superhero genre, though being a low budget film, A Flying Jatt comes out with a message to save our mother Earth, and if the major VFX flaws are ignored, it is a good comical watch for the kids and adults alike.

“Everything has an alternative except Mother Earth,” Remo D’Souza

Entertainment One’s ‘Peppa Pig’ grows significantly in all platforms in China

Entertainment One (eOne), the Canadian media distribution company, outlines details of its animated content Peppa Pig’s rapidly growing popularity in China.

Since launching on-air in Mainland China in 2015, eOne’s Peppa Pig has been captivating audiences throughout the country. The show has now surpassed 5.4 billion views on its three on demand platforms namely IQIY, Youku and Tudou since launching in October 2015. It is also one of the most popular programmes for pre-schoolers on state television broadcaster CCTV, where its repeat was the No. 1 animated show in its 7am timeslot.

Peppa Pig also launched on VOD portals Tencent and LeEco in May 2016. To date Peppa episodes have already clocked up 1.7 billion views on Tencent and 850 million views on LeEco, making it the most preferred animation on both platforms since its launch.

In addition, Mango TV has recently acquired the rights to Peppa Pig and the VOD platform debuted the series earlier this month in Mandarin.

Alongside its growing on-air presence, eOne is also nurturing the property’s digital profile through a range of social, online and interactive content. The brand’s official Peppa WeChat account, available on mobile devices, provides followers with regular news updates, tips, and activities for all the family. Peppa’s WeChat account, launched in April 2016, has already generated thousands of sign-ups demonstrating the brand’s appeal in the country.

The Peppa Pig apps have had notable download rates, making China the biggest territory for Peppa app downloads worldwide. Following their entrance on the App Store in late 2015, Peppa’s Paintbox and Peppa’s Activity Maker have been popular in China, with over 400,000 and 195,000 downloads respectively.

Peppa’s online presence also extends onto e-commerce platforms as major Chinese online retailers Jing Dong and Tmall have launched a wide range of Peppa merchandise on their popular online shopping sites.

Toys are spearheading the brand’s licensing programme in China and a newly launched Peppa Pig Ferris Wheel playset was sold exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores nationwide during the country’s Children’s Day celebration in June 2016. The publishing category also continues to accelerate. A new series of Peppa Pig storybooks launched at retail in April 2016 and over 75k copies have been distributed nationally both online and in-store.

Peppa Pig products will also have a presence in China’s first Hamleys toy store that is set to open its doors on 10 October. eOne’s Hong Kong team is developing bespoke Peppa artwork for a branded bay in the store.

Entertainment One Family, MD, Olivier Dumont said: “We are thrilled to welcome our new broadcast partners for Peppa in China and we are confident that these additional consumer touchpoints will significantly increase exposure for the brand as it continues to grow in popularity. Building Peppa Pig’s digital footprint in the territory, through app downloads and social media channels, enables us to engage with audiences beyond the TV show and create the loyal fanbase that is key to its longevity.”

June Software’s ‘Warrior Dash’ brews an exciting mixture of racing and RPG genres

While racing has always been and still is one of the most beloved genres when it comes to gaming, creators of new racing games are always trying their best to improvise and usher in new elements to break the monotony that comes in at times. And to be fair, it does work for good, as racing games with elements from other genres interspersed within it will give players a different experience all together. Such a game is Warrior Dash which combines the thrill of a racing game with the strategic elements of an RPG (Role Playing Game).

Developed by June Software and published by San Francisco based TangoME, Warrior Dash is a real time multiplayer racing game with RPG elements at its core. You can choose from six different classes of warriors to begin with, each with their own set of powers and unique traits. You can compete against your friends and other players online, in real time. You can upgrade your warrior as you progress and build him into the ultimate combo of a racing and killing machine.

AnimationXpress reached out to Warrior Dash, project leader, Shantesh Patil to get better insights about the game.

Speaking on the deal with Tango, Patil expressed, “The key to a game like Warrior Dash is to combine the real-time multiplayer experience of the game along with the aspect of being able to play with your real-world friends. Messaging apps like Tango, Facebook bring you one step closer to interacting with your friends while playing a real-time game like Warrior Dash. We found this concept intriguing and thought of combining these into the Warrior Dash game.”

Apparently, the game draws inspiration from the studio’s previous game, Ninjump Dash which was published by Backflip Studios. One might wonder that if the concept is similar, why another game on the same lines?

Patil answered by saying, “While the previous game was well received by players and did have more content at launch it was also limited in terms of player progression. When we decided to do a warrior- themed game, we wanted to put the focus on the player character and progression above just cosmetics and content. We looked at all the attributes that defined a character from their physical abilities to the powers that they can use inside the game. We then put the ability to tweak these various attributes in the hands of the player, essentially allowing two players to build up the same class of warrior in their own unique ways as they progress through the game.”

Warrior Dash

Something that is indeed interesting is the amalgamation of two of the most popular genres of gaming (racing and RPG) coupled with a real time multiplayer system which breathes in dynamism to the gameplay experience. Many single player games fade after a while if the flow of new content is not adequate, while multiplayer games thrive longer. However, they might eventually lose its player base if new content is not integrated timely, so what will be the case for Warrior Dash?

“Our system on both the client side and the back end server side has been designed to make it as easy as possible to add new content. We do plan to add new levels, characters, powers and weapons to the game and are thinking of a few interesting sub systems. However, this will only be done when we have ironed out all bugs,” said Patil, which is good sign for the game in the long run.

Each race (read: match) has a four player cap and is free to play, however it has optional in-game purchases. There are many games out there, which follow the same model but their in-app purchase options make the game pretty much free-to-play but pay-to-win, will that be the case with this game too?

“Players will be able to make in-app purchases to buy power upgrades and weapons in the game. However, most purchases are also tied to a character’s level in the game. A level can only be reached through a player’s skill and ability to win races. Any purchases that are not level locked like weapons only amplify the players’ current powers rather than giving anyone who buys it an unfair advantage. In addition we also have matchmaking rules in place to ensure that players of similar skills are matched together to ensure a fun and balanced multiplayer game for all.”

Around six to eight people and some interns worked on the game for a year and a half and as the project leader exulted, “Importantly we leveraged our existing tools and remade them to also ensure that it runs on our proprietary back end engine, code named the ‘minion engine’”.

Warrior Dash Team

Warrior Dash development team

The game has been soft launched in Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, New Zealand, Vietnam, Singapore, and India to “gauge metrics” and is expected to be fully launched around the holiday season. (November – December).

Commenting on what plans the studio has for the game, a positive Patil mentioned, “Managing friend invites, game invites, gifting and sharing with friends even outside of the game using the messaging interface is something that we have on the road-map of Warrior Dash. This will lead to a scenario where you can chat with your friends and then start a real-time game with them.”

The game is available on Android and iOS platforms and looks pretty good from the preview. Let’s see how the studio manages to market and support the game once it releases.
