DreamWorks pulls-off a double whammy, simultaneously releases trailers of ‘Penguins’ and ‘Home’

Looks like DreamWorks is pulling out all the stops to overcome the lackluster response to its recently released sequel to ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. After launching its YouTube channel – DreamWorksTV – it has very strategically released the trailers to its next two big releases simultaneously on the online video behemoth.

The two trailers in question are: The Penguins of Madagascar and Home. The first being a spin-off of one of DreamWork’s tentpoles – Madagascar – and the other focusing on human interaction with an alien from outer space.

The studio is betting big on The Penguins of Madagascar, as it feels that it was the right time to really let the penguins work their magic in a big solo venture after having already tested waters with them on smaller webisodes and TV shorts.

The Penguins of Madagascar will be a 3D action comedy film, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox. The spin-off will follow the penguins – Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private – in their own spy thriller. The project is helmed by Simon J. Smith and Eric Darnell, with Michael Colton and John Aboud on board as the scribes.

With Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, John DiMaggio, Christopher Knights being cast as the voices of the penguins, the feature also boasts of having Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Jeong and John Malkovich as part of the voice cast.

Debuting in an animation film, ‘Sherlock’ actor Benedict Cumberbatch will take the role of Classified, a dashing-looking wolf with a serious set of eyebrows. He plays a secret agent who heads a covert animal-protection organisation called North Wind.

Home is a feature film directed by Tim Johnson and based on the children’s book ‘The True Meaning of Smekday’. Jim Parsons as ‘Oh’ seems fun enough and Rihanna adds some starpower as ‘Tip’, but going by the trailer we can easily say that voice acting should be left to professionals.

With so much riding on both these films, DreamWorks has its work cut out to really pull in the audience and ensure firstly The Penguins of Madagascar – that’s releasing on 26 November, 2014 – does well at the box-office and then try and replicate that success with Home releasing on 27 March, 2015.

YouTube will be the dominant platform for media consumption in the next 5 years: Jeffrey Katzenberg

DreamWorks Animation’s CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg made heads turn recently at the Cannes Lions, as he stuck his neck out and stated that the online video streaming giant -YouTube – will become the dominant platform in which media will be consumed in half a decade, dwarfing current television giants.

Katzenberg went onto describe YouTube as a fantastic platform for studios to discover new talent and encouraged more companies to seriously think of investing in the platform beginning now.

According to DWA’s top boss, YouTube allows anyone to tell their stories and there is no big barrier that’s holding back content creators and owners from entering this realm of freely available content.

He rightly explained how content that’s created for the mobile platform becomes a much more personal experience for the consumer and allows one to get sucked into the lives of different people and really transform into an immersive experience.

Discussing the new channel for kids, Dreamworks TV, which will distribute over 15,000 hours of content for kids across YouTube, Katzenberg stated that he was very excited to bring his company into a more consumable platform – especially for kids

He further went onto explain that according to recent studies – kids were consuming television, firstly through Netflix and then YouTube, conventional channels were much further down the list.

“YouTube has established a foundation that will in five years be the biggest most valuable media platform by far and there will not be anything remotely close to it,” said Katzenberg. “They have created the bottom of the pyramid and over these next few years we’ll watch the pyramid grow. The advertising community must get in there today on the ground floor and experiment – just the way we are.”

How Sony's Betamax lost to JVC's VHS Cassette Recorder

In 1976 Sony introduced the Betamax video cassette recorder. It catalyzed the “on demand” of today by allowing users to record television shows, and the machine ignited the first “new media” intellectual property battles. In only a decade this revolutionary machine disappeared, beaten by JVS’s version of the cassette recorder. This video tells the story of why Betamax failed. This is one of three videos in a series on marketplace failures of technological objects. http://www.engineerguy.com/failure.

VIDYA SEASONAL KITCHEN | SUMMER

Summer, a time where life slows down just enough to taste its sweetness more fully. Where the days are long and the nights are longer. We romance ourselves a little more in this time. We allow life to be savored in every moment, down to the last juicy bite of summer fruit dripping down our chins and sticky hands. And those balmy nights where we gather around the table with good company and linger over the last bite as the conversation and laughter drifts into the stars, carried off by the soft sounds of cicadas. That’s the romance of summer, that’s summer love… ———– Each season, Claire Ragozzino shares a peek inside her kitchen and what she’s cooking to create balanced health. x.pose

x.pose is a wearable data-driven sculpture that exposes a person’s skin as a real-time reflection of the data that the wearer is producing. In the physical realm we can deliberately control which portions our bodies are exposed to the world by covering it with clothing. In the digital realm, we have much less control of what personal aspects we share with the services that connect us. In the digital realm we are naked and vulnerable. https://www.behance.net/gallery/17256769/xpose ITP NYU Thesis 2014 Special thanks to: Nancy Hechinger, Ben LIght, Eric Rosenthal, Pedro Oliveira, Talya Stein, Roy Rochlin, Heidi Lee, Rashad Taylor, ITP community, Family & Friends Music: Quantic – Time is the Enemy
