Moving Picture Company Vancouver is now hiring in the following roles:

Animators – All levels, local candidates with vfx experience strongly preferred
Prep Artist – At least 2 years of prep experience preferred
Lighting TDs – Local candidates with vfx experience strongly preferred
Compositors – All levels, local candidates with vfx experience preferred
FX TDs – All levels, local candidates with vfx experience strongly preferred

Animators
Primary Responsibilities:
• To create animation for realistic creatures, and talking characters.
• To bring a creative and proactive attitude to the task of animating performances
• To organize their time, collaborate, and effectively communicate with their supervisors and team mates.
• Do their best to stay positive and creative in the chaos of the production environment

Experience and Skills:
• Knowledge of Maya
• At least 2 years of professional experience in VFX
• An understanding of animation principles and work methods
• Animation and drawing/sculpting training a plus

Prep Artist
Primary Responsibilities:
• Lead a team of prep artists to get live action plates ready for compositors
• Assist artists in problem resolution
• Remove unwanted plate elements such as wires, and tracking markers
• Reconstruct areas obstructed by other foreground objects

Experience and Skills:
• Minimum 2 years film experience.
• Must be proficient in a dedicated Paint package, for example Shake.
• Experience in Silhouette FX an advantage but not necessary.
• Candidates should demonstrate a good eye for detail and precision, have an in depth knowledge and understanding of film.

Lighting TD
Primary Responsibilities:
• Using an array of commercial and proprietary lighting tools to match CG lighting to on-set lighting
• Producing test and final renders of all CG elements
• Creating working comps for review by the supervision team
• Assisting and developing the look of a shot or sequence with the supervision team
• Working in partnership with compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.

Experience and Skills:
• Proven production lighting experience
• Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies related to CG rendering and compositing
• Excellent communication skills
• Proven technical and creative ability in a large feature-film VFX production environment
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Working knowledge of Shake
• Very good understanding of shading, lighting and rendering terminology
• Very good understanding of production pipelines
• Very good knowledge of a production renderer
• Very good knowledge of node-based compositing software
• General understanding of linux/unix-based operating systems
• Python and MEL scripting experience an advantage

Compositor
Primary responsibilities:
• Tackling the compositing of shots effectively
• Delivering final shots that are creatively and technically excellent

Experience and Skills:
• Experience with Shake
• Strong film showreel.
• Good understanding of photography and film, and how the interactions of light, lenses and film emulsions make up the image.
• Some understanding of the whole digital film pipeline, from scanner to film recorder.
• Ability to take direction and structure working practice so that design changes can be efficiently made.
• Desire to learn from others and to take on increasingly challenging shots.

FX TD
FX Technical Directors gather a variety of 3D assets produced by our Layout and Animation departments and use our cutting-edge proprietary toolset to create particle, rigid body, fluid, cloth, fur and hair simulations. Once approved, these are cached to disk. We then either apply lights and shaders using our in-house lighting toolkit to produce the final rendered image, or release the caches back into the pipeline to be lit and rendered by members of our Lighting department.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Develops innovative, believable and beautiful solutions to challenging and complex problems.
• Uses an array of commercial and proprietary software tools to produce photorealistic simulations of real-world phenomena.
• Produces test and often final renders of FX elements for a shot.
• Creates working test composites for review by the supervision team.
• Works in partnership with lighters & compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.

Experience and skills:
• Proven experience in feature, commercials or broadcast visual effects production (or plenty of raw talent if you’re a recent graduate), with a showreel to back this up.
• Experience in live action FX work preferred.
• Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to physical simulation in computer graphics.
• Good understanding of the entire visual effects process: shooting, layout, matchmoving, modelling, texturing, rigging, animation, FX, lighting and compositing.
• A basic understanding of physics: newtonian mechanics is the bread and butter of FX work.
• An eye for visual effects work: the ability to analyse an image and determine what
needs to be done to improve it, in terms of both aesthetics and believability. The ability to blend art and science in the pursuit of superlative visual effects.
• The ability to think clearly and creatively under pressure.
• Good proficiency with Autodesk Maya, our primary 3D package.
• Strong scripting skills, in MEL, Python or preferably both. C/C++ programming and shell scripting abilities are also valuable.
• Working knowledge of Pixar’s PRMan renderer preferred, although experience with other renderers may be considered.
• Familiarity with at least one film compositing application (Shake and/or Nuke ]
preferred), and a solid understanding of the compositing process.
• Good computer skills, particularly with the UNIX/Linux command line.
