Procedural modelling

I’ve just been reading about Houdini’s "procedural modelling". What does this mean exactly…? What difference would this make between constructing a model in Houdini, say, from constructing the same model in a "non-procedural" system…? And which type is Maya/3DS…?

Roto-ing fast moving/blurred subject – possible to track??

Hi, I’m working on a shot at the moment which is very tricky (to me at least…). There is a fair amount of camera movement, and in addition the subject is also moving quickly and flailing their limbs around – at the moment I’m having to adjust shapes every other frame which is massively time-consuming.

I’ve tried doing just a single-point track on various parts of the subject to minimise the translational adjustment of the shapes at least, but this is near impossible as there is too much motion blur and not enough contrast for the tracker to stick – plus the movement of arms & legs means they get obscured too 🙁

Is this where a planar tracker would be better? e.g. Mocha? Or is this just one of those shots that requires a lot of patience and/or coffee?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Clone effect – masking and compositing

Hey, need help creating the clone effect for a particular shot:
the person will be cloned in car. same person driving, same person in the passenger seat and two more (same person) in the back seats (window seats). decided to shoot at night to avoid any discontinuity from shadows during the day. i’ll be lighting the subject in each seat with a car lighting rig so lighting wont be an issue I’m shooting on a canon 7d and will probably edit the sequence in fcp7. not sure if fcp7 can do what i’m looking to do but i’m sure after effects will.

question 1: how should i go about shooting this to successfully clone my subject without making it look amateur?

question 2: which program for masking would you recommend?

question 3: i hate that i ruled out shooting during the day because the shot would’ve been a lot better. any suggestions for shooting during the day?

thanks a lot

Doubts

I am having a doubt. I request you all to guide me.

I have a 64 bit dell laptop with win7. I have the software but pirated ones. I belong to vfx industry and use software like maya, fusion, nuke, boujou, realflow etc. I have few questions:

1. Is it advisable to use pirated software on genuine windows like win 7/XP?

2. Does windows still get it dues(updates and all)?

3. does usage of pirated software , will do any harm to security of laptop in terms of hardware?

Kindly rectify these doubts for me.
