Advice needed – HD camera for action shots

Hello friends,

I need some advice on which camera you would recommend for shooting action scenes.
We´ll be shooting a medieval related short film that will have some battle shots.

We are going to use a Canon 5D for principal photography, but are reluctant to use it for action shots it due to the rolling shutter thing, as some VFX will be involved.

Any advice on this ?

advice needed for managing assets

Hi, is there anyone out there that can advise me upon a cheapo out of the box solution for manageing 2d and 3d assets that have been created in maya…………i am happy to store them just in Jpeg.(digitally)……..the assets are really just to organise and to look at progress in different asset catogories……….but with ease and with toggle speed.

I am open to all dumb suggestions and will not hold it against you.

if anyone in L.A wants to also help me with this……..to get it set up…..i will pay.

Getting Footage working from HPX 300

So I did my shooting yesterday and transferred my footage off of the camera and into final cut pro. I looked at the footage on the schools computer, then I put it onto my external hardrive. I looked at it on my hardrive one more time before disconnecting it from the computer.

I went home, plugged in my external hardrive and tried to play it. This is what comes up when I try too. Whats going on? I was talking to one of my friends and sent the file to him and he was able to watch it on his macbook pro. I have a imac.

here’s some pics of the file and error messages. I also have a final cut pro 6.0.6 and i’m getting version 7 of final cut pro now. I’m hoping it would make things easier for me.

one of my friends says that I’m missing a codec.

Hi could anybody tell is there any specifications for showreel

Currently im making it as 1080p and as avi

but the video playback seems to be terrible.i don really get to see continous playback in vlc or in quick time.

Please tell me is there any specs
im editing in after effects

Learning Dynamics in Houdini?

I’ve been teaching myself dynamics in Maya for a little while now, and was hoping to start going into houdini.

I haven’t used houdini before so i was going to start with tutorials on the application basics to learn my way around it. After that I’m not sure where to go to start getting the dynamics down. I know their website has a list of some the tutorials they recognize, but they don’t seem to go too far in the way of dynamics and of the ones that are there I’m not sure which are the best.

I’d really love to hear some opinions on the best direction to take in expanding knowledge in this area.

What is Nuke used for?

Hello, I am interested in Nuke 6.1 (for linux)
But when I got the trial version, it could not load any sort of video, and could not render to any sort of video, and I’ve heard it’s mostly for images?
It seems like it would be a great video editor, so I’m confused as to what it’s purpose is.
Please leave a short description of what it is used for, and what it isn’t used for

Stereoscopic Smoke

Hey All,
I may have to comp in some smoke into a stereoscopic shot. Would it make sense to also shoot that smoke with the same stereoscopic rig? I would be worried about the keying not matching between eyes, thus messing up it’s depth.

Would it be best to shoot the smoke 2D and just layer it?

depth layer in Nuke

Hello, I’m dealing with a depth layer exported from XSI into Nuke.
So everything is normalized with values between 0 and 1.

I am trying to get the z value of the initial points, I have the settings for the camera in XSI something like:

fov :53.638
near plane 0.1
far plane 322768

does that mean that [0, 322768] got linearly mapped to [0.1]?

so to restore the initial z, i just multiply back by 322768 ?
would that make sense?
