Defocus = banding

Hi,
I know banding is prone to appear when defocusing or bluring, but I hoped Nuke’s internal 32-bit processing would help…
It doesn’t. When defocusin a BG plate even on the highest setting the render will exhibit banding.

I tried doing several defocuses one after the other, adding some grain in between them. The result is optically worst (closer to a blur, not a proper lens defocus) and the banding is much worst…

I am working on Red footage already graded to ProRes 422HQ (10-bit quicktime).
I know file sequences are great, but break our workflow, and I couldn’t get ProRes 4444 not to shift the image gamma. I don’t think that’s the problem anyway.

Any ideas or workarounds?
I must submit tomorrow!
Meanwhile I’m blaming the h264 compression for it but the online is screwed if I can’t solve it…:eek:
Thanks!!!!
