UV editor basic basics

Hi,

I am looking for a very basic introduction to the UV editor in Maya. Most tutorials presuppose reader knows why there are four different areas and why UVs should lay in 0 and 1.

I know how to to UV mapping but i dont know why they should be laid in 0 and 1. I dunno what will happen if they are not. In fact i dont even know why there are 4 areas while most the time we just use 1.

Please help me understand. Thank you
