Ink drop FX

I need to create ink drop effects like this:
I’ve tried using Maya Fluid, but I only got this:
I googled and found someone said Particle Illusion can do it too.
So, what’s the simplest solution for this case? I’m a noob to VFX while facing a deadline for this project next week. I appreciate it so much if you give me some hints on how I should create it.
