Extrude tool

I am having trouble getting the extract tool to show on the screen. When I click the button at the top it does not appear and when I try to open it through the Mesh drop down menu I just get an error message saying:
// Error: Command polySeparate failed. Open Script Edior for details.
What do I need to do to get the tool to appear on my models?
