I’m running a new particle sculpting tool project.

I’m running a new particle editing tool named Sparta.

I want to build this app to new digital sculpting app for volume date (e.g. smoke, fire, water).

something like this.

But, I don’t have a many knowledge about “sculpting the particle”.

And, this project is currently an initial stage.

I posted a thread about this project before beginning it.

I got some advice, and started a development.

I’m going to constantly post a progress to this project page.

I need an opinion and feedback from fx-artists.

If you have a question or advice, please teach me 🙂

Floating Object – tips?

Hey guys,

So I’m trying to make a composite of an object floating on a little “pad”, and then have my hand reach in and grab it, spin it around a bit, and then place it back on the “pad” to float. (Note: Much like the Unobtainium scene in Avatar)

I have 2 clips, one of just the pad blank, and one of my hand reaching in holding and spinning the rock. The rock is taped to a pen to make it float, and I am trying to key out the pen but am not sure the best way to do it.

I tried using mocha, and followed the entire object with an X-spline track, but I don’t think that was the right thing to do, as I am trying to import it into AE and turn the x-splines into a mask, but don’t think this is possible (or easy at least).

There has to be an easy way to just mask the rock itself, and then mask my hand going in, so that besides the rock and my hand, it is all the background video that is seen.

I’m fairly new to this so if you could be as specific as possible would help! 5 second clip linked to show you what my masking in AE looks like (shit), because I have to keyframe almost every frame as it moves so much. I’ve done it fairly lazily to show you what I am trying to accomplish though.

Any help greatly appreciated.

VFX Job Workflow Help / Potential Job

Hey Guys,

A mate is working on a short film he shot a few months ago, and now things have changed, we would like to get some feed back on the best way to attack / achieve the new look of the image.

The Film involves a talking tree, so 2 plates have been shot, on RED 4kHD

Plate A: Tree Plate
Plate B: Talking Tree Mask

Originally, the shots were a simple ‘comp A onto B’, but he had an idea to change the way the head sits on the tree, so now its supposed to be ‘inside’ the tree with bark and what not over top of it.

Below is a scribble in PS of what its roughly meant to look like now. (its an example, by no means ‘final’)

Anyways, here is a link to 2 of the plate shots.

http://vimeo.com/25387529 Pass: tree

In total, there is about 15 or so shots needed, some from different angles ie. Top Right looking down. All Shots have a BG plate and FG plate with matching lens size, angle etc.

Sorry if im confusing so far, BUT here is what we were going to do for a workflow.

Track Footage
Key plate
Use 3D geo to make the ‘Ring’ to layer on top and blend the plates. Bring Geo into Nuke
Project Textures in Nuke, (maybe use STmap for UV????)
Use Normal Map to light.
Cast shadows using nuke lights (not sure if its possible???).
Finish comping as usual (CC, edge work, Grain blabla etc)

But the little prob we have making it believable is all the little splinters and stuff that would be on the edge of the outer bark. Would it be good to photograph Elements and then put them on cards all around the edge?, or use a particle system in 3d for splinters???

Ideally the workflow uses Nuke as much as possible and stays away from 3D but well, its a cruel world…

Other option is to get someone from here to do it 🙂

Obviously, not for free, but honestly, it would probably be next to, for the amount of work required. (I do understand about ‘work costs money’, unlike some job posts on this forum…) So i am in no way banking on the option. It is, just an option.

Actually, 3rd option is for us to get all the plates ready, ie keying etc, and for someone else to make the joining layer/layers, send it to us and then we finish the comp?? lessens the work.

Any help, or advice on the situation or workflow, or maybe other ‘more effective’ ways do doing it better, would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

-Matt-

(and please dont comment about working for free/pittance = bull$hit, i know ;))
