Character Texturing

Hi everyone,
I’m currently a student studying visual effects. I would like to be a 2-D compositor in the future but the school teaches us to be a generalist. This was an early project I did where I had to texture everything about the female (skin, eyes, clothes, shoes etc.). Sorry about the horrible lighting (hadn’t taken lighting class before this).:)

some texturing

I’m currently a student studying visual effects, this was a project we had to complete for school. We had to texture the whole room and light it as well. This was all done in Maya.

Particle and Compositing Fx

Hi.

my recent particle fx.
196 MB SD footage, 17 Passes.
19.2 GB Particle Cache, >150 compositing nodes
Maxscript setup for the Rig System.

and here a tiny little matchmove test with particle morphing and stuff.

Student, looking for feed back please.

Hi, I’m going to school for visual effects. I want to be a 2-D Compositor but our school teaches us to be a generalist. Here is one of my school projects, your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

We had to model, texture and light our own outside scene:
I have lit my scene in the day time and late afternoon, plus my reference collage, thanks.:spiderman

Maya Displacement Issue

Hi guys,

I got the following problem in my render (see picture) – does anyone of you know how to fix that? … Do I have to mess around with the Mi DisplacementApproximation? or is it a simple readnode problem?

There is no other way to achieve that look without a displacement is it? (don’t wanna model all that text xD)

thanks:D

Softdistortion VFX01 WIP

Still working away at this project and having a great time!
Had some questions (from other places) about the props in this live shot we were testing for VFX integration with our CG robot.
http://softdistortion.com/VFX01journal/

Thought I would add it to this forum…might have some info people will find of interest.

The main visor prop is a old AM/FM headset we picked up for $4.
The radio circuit board was cut out an the batteries and on/off switch were wired to some blue LEDs. A wire was fed through the antenna to light one of the LEDs and a rubber grommet was put on the LED bulb to make it look more complex.

The suit is made of those disposable paper coverall suits used for painting etc @ $5 each.
We used 2 and cut them up to make the jacket/pants and also boots and a face mask.
T-shirt heat transfer sheets were used to make the BIOdivision logo green material on the front of the suit.

The safety glasses @$6 are the type with a little LED light on the front.
We reversed the light to shine on the actors face, and specifically eyes. I think this adds some beautiful visual contrast…especially on closeups with the eyes looking right into the lens.

The flashing lights are LED strobe lights @$2 each form a dollar store. We put them on the ground and later when I was shooting free hand, I thought, lets put 2 of them on the tripod head. Turned out pretty cool looking I think!

These strobes are and amazing find for the price. They have a circuit that allows the strobe feq to be adjusted over a large range.

We picked up 5 and one has already been stripped of it’s circuits and use on another really cool prop that I’ll show in near future.

imo this is the type of thing we need to get good at to optimize time and costs. You can’t buy and build something like that strobe circuit for $2!

Fire & Explosion Tests

My first WIP post here. Here are a few initial renders. These are created in Cinema 4D with the plugin Turbulence FD (formerly Turbulence 4D).
