VFX Challenge 402 – MacGyver

Hey everyone,

First post. I could’ve sworn I had a login that worked here. Been a lurker for a while.

Just wanted to start a placeholder thread. Joining in a little late, but better late than never… right? Hopefully I’ll be able to finish up by the end of the month. Moving on the 1st. Might be a close one…

Given the theme, I’d like everything to have a more practical/organic look. I shot some elements for my entry this afternoon. I’ll post some stills and WIP screenshots in the days to come. 🙂

VFX Challenge 402 – Team Cilantro

Hi all, welcome to Team Cilantro’s WIP thread for VFX Challenge 402.

Team Cilantro consists of 3 compositors:

Rob Price – www.rob-price.com
Chase Bickel – www.mergeover.com
Tony Lyons – www.creativelyons.com

A Little about us:

We all graduated from Full Sail’s Computer Animation program in December 2009, all of us majoring in compositing. Upon graduating, we moved to Los Angeles in search of career opportunities in the VFX industry. We wanted to take on the VFX Challenge to practice doing what we love.

We have been working all month but waited until we had some real progress before we started posting WIPs. We will be posting the work we’ve done so far in the next few days.

Hope you enjoy the thread, Thank you!

VFX challenge 402 WIP: Through the looking glass

This is the storyboards for the first scene of this challenge. We also have a rough model of what the attic will look like. Our vision for this is to have sunlight appear through the top window over the mirror creating an atmosphere of seclusion/mystery. We will post more as we work to keep everyone updated with our production.

WIP 402 – Rhino

So I have just been doing some ‘previz’ stuffing. Throwing together different images to try and get an idea of what I need to do for the final shot. Here is my progress. I want to add a lot more color. The movie was blasting with colors, lots and lots of primary colors.

VFX402 (WIP) – AlexSlocker

So here goes the basic structure of my scene and things the way I thought them. For me, the scene should be working as a little story, so it’s all about storytelling. A scene that tells something. The good thing is that ‘Alice in Wonderland’ it’s well known by all the people and I can assume that if I omit some stuff, or just I show specific stuff, the general knowledge would do the rest. Besides, this help me getting rid of some work and focus on specific things.

With this idea in mind I decided to change the point of view and show the scene from the Queen’s side. She’ll not be at home, actually, but I’ll show the way she lives and through the space try to catch how eccentric the Queen is. I thought that I’ve to update some years the general aesthetic around Wonderland. This is because in the supplied footage given there’re two woman dress like doing some gym, and would be just weird to have a middle age (¿?) renaiccanse (¿?) aesthetic. So I start wondering how the Queen should look if she would be living this days, and I thought in this granny, always inside home, with the house FULL of staff, pictures everywhere, little boxes near to the table where the phone is, this little crochet tableclothes in any place, flower vases, and that kind of stuff.

That’s how it’s going to be shown in image, just by the POV of the Queen’s nowadays castle! This is a storyboard of the general structure that it’s going to have.

First of all we’re going to see the house hall fully stuffed. Pictures everywhere, vases with flowers, carpets, etc. I thought about doing the pictures actual cards, like 8 of hearts, for example, as if he was one of her sons; the big picture might be the King but drawn as if Bacon done it, didn’t decided yet, anyway. There’s going to be a general shot and some closeups to the pictures, but we end aiming the camera to the top of the stairs.

Next, the corridor where the stairs end -again fully stuffed-, and in the very far side, probably some wide lens (18-24mm), an almost closed door by which the sunlight is filtering. Then a shadow or a glimpse of light, or whatever comes out from the door while the camera close up to it.

Then we’ll see the interior of that room, which is spheric, fully stuffed again; we’re going to see a table where all the jewlery is not just the crown but some other stuff. In one side it’s going to be the mirror and coming out of it the character. Then a cut to a closeup to the table where the crown is and a 3D arm taking it (not sure about this anyway).

The shot it’s going to stay that way, we hear some steps through the floor a very bright glimpse of light and then, after a while, the same arm putting the crown in the very same table. Back to a general shot but now the space it’s going to change to a much modern looking. Flat colors, walls painted in different tones, and perhaps (yet to be decided as well) a cradle with the name ‘Alice’ and a copy of “Alice in Wonderland” in the floor.

That’s the general idea, now I have to put it in images!

VFX402 WIP – Loud

Already have some ideas swirling for this one… here are a few rough (read: poorly drawn) sketches of a couple shots I’d like to put together. Fortunately, I got a compositing job starting on Monday, but that means I don’t know how much time it’s going to leave me to work on this. I want to finish this shot, though, even if I miss the deadline, since I like the idea.

We see the attic at first. We see the girl walking toward the mirror, and as we get closer, the reflection in the mirror changes to the inside of a hollow tree. We ultimately drop down the hole and come out at the bottom near a cobblestone clearing. Haven’t sketched the hole or the clearing yet.

(Note: I haven’t seen Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland yet, so any glaring similarities to the movie are entirely coincidental)
