Gmunk Returns

I still remember the first time I saw Bradley (GMUNK) Munkowitz’s experimental short, “Finn.” It was in 2002, and I was working as a web designer for the University of Texas, crammed into a dim corner of a room with brown carpeted walls and humming fluorescent lights.

Seeing that film was an important moment in my career. Along with a handful of other groundbreaking works, it sparked an interest in motion design that has sustained me to the current day.

Now, with the (long overdue) relaunch of Gmunk’s site, “Finn” is online, along with 10 years worth of other work. There’s also some great new Tron making-of action in the mix. It’s simultaneously a trip down memory lane and a look into the future.

I should also mention that David Lewandowski mounted a relaunch, too (Quickied). More Tron goodness there, as well as a bucketful of inspiring work.

Josh Nimoy: TRON Legacy Software Art

This one’s for the openFrameworks fans – Josh Nimoy shares his documentation on the custom software created for TRON: Legacy. I’m excited for more collaborations between the openFrameworks/processing/cinder/etc. and motion graphics communities. Bonus nerd points for hacker sequence verisimilitude. (found via @golan)

Talking Tron with Digital Domain

Despite its criticisms, the unanimous consensus regarding TRON: Legacy is that it’s both visually and technically stunning. We had a chance to catch up with the crew that made it happen, Digital Domain. Not only were they the forces behind its production—alongside director Joe Kosinski, of course—they helped shaped the film far before a pixel was even rendered.

Giving us a fully detailed account of their creative and technical processes were Eric Barba, Visual Effects Supervisor; Ed Ulbrich, Digital Domain Commercials Division President and Executive Producer; and Darren Gilford, Production Designer.

Another major note is the integral involvement of some very familiar veterans of the motion design scene, including GMUNK and Jake Sargeant as Lead Animated Graphics Artists working with a team of David Lewandowski, Adam Swaab, Joseph Chan, Josh Nimoy and Karsten Schmidt.

Daft Punk vs Tron vs Tron Legacy

Tron Legacy: Teaser Scene

tron legacy

Unveiled at Comic-Con last week in San Diego, this teaser scene for the forthcoming Tron Legacy movie from Walt Disney Pictures looks incredibly hot. With Joseph Kosinski at the helm, the film promises to be, at the very least, a visual spectacle worth the price of admission.

We’re working on getting more information about the production. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: We’ve been cleared to share that Digital Domain, with whom Kosinski has worked on many projects in the past, handled the visual effects for this sequence.
