The main barrier we got to conquer before this happens I think is finger print proof glass. :p

When you work in a production environment, you are automatically exposed to these and pick up your strings right away. But for an ametuer and freelancer, it becomes very difficult to get the right scene and to open it up to understand the ‘how’.
Any suggestions???

I’m looking for a new laptop but i just dont know which one.
This is what im looking for:
17" Glossy Screen (best if 1080p or 1200p)
NumberPad on the side of the keyboard is a must!!
Must be able to run at LEAST 4g, of course more is welcome
Should be able to hold 2 hard drives.. optional though..
Dvd burner of course but NO blueray! I dont use it and that will save me a few bucks.
Decent processor.. intel core 2 duo and up.
GPU, i would like nvidia, i’ve always had nvidia and for 3d work i believe its better, right?
My past 2 laptops have been HP, all with 17" screens and i will NEVER buy HP again… Both of them have burnt screens and always just a month after the warranty expires, the way it should be right? lol So anything but HP…
I was looking into alienware since their prices have lowered considerably and since im not looking to max it out i think i can get a pretty good deal. The thing is they are only offering their 17 inch model with ATI video card :S
I will be doing compositing and 3d work…
Help me out picking s good notebook.

Also, what basic softwares does one need to be aware of / proficient in to be termed as either "VFX artist" of "SFX artist".

It may be technically correct, but changing a pixel aspect preset from one version to the next is NOT a good idea in my book. Oh, and why didn’t they change the very same preset in Photoshop CS4?
Many times while I work, I like having good material playing behind me to listen to, when i am not listening to music.
Anything inspirational usually is great, even if I am not working.
fxguide usually provides some good inspiration in podcast form, as do some behind-the-scenes on DVD special features.
What are some of the best informative/inspirational behind-the-scenes specials you have watched?

Great movie…SLOPPY DI.
Here’s hoping they will release a lens flare free version for the Blu-Ray….probably not tho…so I won’t be buying this one.
I had and okay job right now. Its my first job and i’ve gone quite far since i graduated from animation school. I learn bits and pieces here and there ranging from MEL scripts to understanding compositing nodes. I worked on Maya, Combustion, AE and even Blender!
Recently Rhythm+Hues set foot on our tiny little country, so i kinda like gave it a try and applied for a compositor job. They offered me a training "apprentice pogram" in Roto. They wanted to get roto artists. I asked about things like compositing and effects. They said i can get into the company as a roto artist and work my way up.They told me that this apprentice pogram won;t gurantee a job with Rhythm. They have to evaluate my pogress and performance. I’m not the greatest artist out there but i do believe i will be able work up to it.
So i felt stuck. Both prospect seems ok. Just that one is "Famous" and the other is more obscure. I;m not the rockstar fame and fortune guy. I just wanna learn and try new things. Basically i really don;t know how i should move on. On my current job, i do have alot of areas to improve and i think i have to room to grow.We are doing low end stuffs. TV cartoons.Budget is tight,we find ways to make things look good enough. Not to fancy stuffs. My mates here are good. we basically have the same goals, we want to do our best.
Rhythm is a different path. I guess they are more organised and structured. Before i graudate from Uni. I did quite some research into the VFX industry. Seems like alot compositors start from jobs like Roto and wire removing etc. Perhaps i gotta go through this before stepping into more elaborate job like an FX artist or Compositor? to learn from the most basic process. This could be my break to get into bigger jobs as chances like this don;t come often especially here in Malaysia . Roto is a very daunting task isn;t it? 4k images 2k images. . hi-res footages. what if i sink in a good 2 years in roto and gain nothing out of it?its scary, i don;t know about you guys out here. I felt that roto is actually very monotonous and not that enjoyable. Some of my mates told be that match moving is even more interesting than roto, i’m not sure. They felt that i can do more than just roto, they think its a waste for me not to get something even better but instead starting from really low.
What do you guys think?
I hope you all can give me some inputs before i decide to do the leap of faith.Perhaps some of you can share some experiences dealing with situations like this
Cheers
