Qualifications
mastery of core 3D principles rotation, translation, scale, gimbal lock
thorough understanding of 3D camera principles lenses, distortion, parallax, camera projection, overscan, cornerpins
artist must be well versed with Maya, Boujou, Matchmover, Syntheyes, PFTrack or other tracking software
artists must be able to take direction and work in a team oriented environment, great communication skills are a must

LUMA PICTURES is an artist-run feature film VFX studio located a few blocks from the beach off of Abbot Kinney in Venice, California. We maintain a unique culture with an amazingly talented staff that consistently cranks out top notch work. We are currently searching for Talented FX TD’s to fill a few choice spots on an upcoming, high profile productions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
– Light and render FX passes for specific shots using developed FX rigs
– Develop rigs/techniques to implement and optimize approved looks
– Produce look tests based on provided reference materials
– Creation of tools and scripts to facilitate workflow
QUALIFICATIONS:
– Artist should be familiar with one or more of the following applications:
– Maya
– Houdini
– Realflow
– Krakatoa
– Fume
– 3dsMax
– Python scripting experience is a plus
– Understanding multi pass 3D compositing is a plus
– Artists must be able to take direction and work in a team focused environment, good communication skills are a must
– Strong time management skills and extremely organized.
– Solid work ethic and a positive attitude in the face of challenging situations.
– Los Angeles Residents or willingness to relocate preferred Relocation assistance may be available subject to negotiation

Key Purpose of the Job
To seamlessly integrate all the layers or elements of a shot, including live-action and computer graphic elements. Compositors work closely with Visual Effects Supervisors and 2D Supervisors to composite the numerous elements that complete a visual effects shot.
Needs To Do
Blue/green screen extractions
Seamless integration of live action, miniature and CGI sources.
Take part in client reviews
Follow production methodologies and develop creative approaches and problem-solving
Performing all aspects of composite fx design
Needs To Know
You must have a minimum of 2 years VFX industry experience
Experience in using Nuke
A knowledge and interest in photography and practical lighting is helpful
Critical eye for detail, and strong communication skills

Duties and Responsibilities:
· Create effects for assigned shots using Maya and other necessary software, ensuring continuity and flow within and between shots and sequences
· Managing other Effects Artists to ensure that all individually assigned Effects deliverables are completed fully and in line with production schedule and Directors overall vision
· Attend Effects reviews for assigned sequences
· Troubleshoot and debug shot problems and escalate technical issues as required
· Maintain a convention of file naming structures for all shots that is compatible within the Silkroading Animation production pipeline
· Remain current and up-to-date in effects techniques through industry research and training
· Perform additional duties as required
Skills and Experience:
· 3+ years CG visual effects experience in a Maya production environment
· Feature film or animation experience an asset
· Completed post-secondary education classical or 3D animation, art fundamentals, or other relevant area of study
· Good working knowledge of Realflow, Maya FX tools, Houdini and 3dMax.
· Experience with Maya particles/dynamics and particle expressions
· Basic understanding of animation styles and techniques and the animation production pipeline as a whole
· Good creative and technical problem solving skills
· Ability to learn quickly and comprehend custom in-house production tools
· Ability to prioritize tasks, meet tight deadlines, and perform to standard in a fast-paced environment
· Compositing principles preferably using Fusion and/or Nuke
· Any scripting language

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
– Technical testing of new environments or assets to determine any upstream setup problems before lighting production
– Communication with the Lighting Technical Directors to help improve processes and workflow.
– Organize and execute data to help optimize lighting rigs, such as baking out UV-based bounce or exposure maps
– Follow-up with other departments while troubleshooting issues until a resolution is reached
– Work in a compositing package to generate image mattes for post production.
– Test new software maps and/or features as needed
Requirements:
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills

– Experience with the unix/linux environment
– 2D/3D graphics software knowledge a plus

Summary:
FX Technical Directors gather a variety of 3D assets produced by our Layout and Animation departments and use our cutting-edge proprietary toolset to create particle, rigid body, fluid, cloth, fur and hair simulations. Once approved, these are cached to disk. We then either apply lights and shaders using our in-house lighting toolkit to produce the final rendered image, or release the caches back into the pipeline to be lit and rendered by members of our Lighting department.
Primary responsibilities:
Develops innovative, believable and beautiful solutions to challenging and complex problems.
Uses an array of commercial and proprietary software tools to produce photorealistic simulations of real-world phenomena.
Produces test and often final renders of FX elements for a shot.
Creates working test composites for review by the supervision team.
Works in partnership with lighters & compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard.
Experience and skills:
Proven experience in feature, commercials or broadcast visual effects production (or plenty of raw talent if you’re a recent graduate), with a showreel to back this up. Experience in live action FX work preferred.
Thorough understanding of techniques and technologies relating to physical simulation in computer graphics.
Good understanding of the entire visual effects process: shooting, layout, matchmoving, modelling, texturing, rigging, animation, FX, lighting and compositing.
A basic understanding of physics: newtonian mechanics is the bread and butter of FX work.
An eye for visual effects work: the ability to analyse an image and determine what needs to be done to improve it, in terms of both aesthetics and believability. The ability to blend art and science in the pursuit of superlative visual effects.
The ability to think clearly and creatively under pressure.
Good proficiency with Autodesk Maya, our primary 3D package.
Strong scripting skills, in MEL, Python or preferably both. C/C++ programming and shell scripting abilities are also valuable.
Working knowledge of Pixar’s PRMan renderer preferred, although experience with other renderers may be considered.
Familiarity with at least one film compositing application (Shake and/or Nuke preferred), and a solid understanding of the compositing process.
Good computer skills, particularly with the UNIX/Linux command line.
