Target and LA Live

Gentleman Scholar joined an impressive lineup of studios and directors to create content for Target’s screens at LA Live, the massive complex of entertainment venues near LA’s downtown area.

While all the videos are cleverly executed, Gentleman Scholar’s stands out for its excellent character work and interplay of 2D and 3D elements. It lives up to its title, “Surprise and Delight,” by introducing a lovable cast of creatures with charming panache.

Sophie Gateau Paranoid US: “White” for LG and LIGHTS

Simple is beautiful. In Lights, Paranoid US and new SF-based agency, DOJO, keeps it simple and retells the classic story of boy meets girl. With director Sophie Gateau at the helm, the piece dually functions as an advert for LG and a music video —similarly named— for electropop artist, LIGHTS.

At the heart of it, the piece is a canny take on an old story —fancying a straightforward approach to create something elaborate, yet deceptively simple. Technically, the piece is exquisitely executed —so well that, on multiple viewings— the animated images appear to be the result of practical effects. The kicker is that it wasn’t. In a most spectacular display of CG stagecraft, Gateau, with a background in CG and motion graphics, utilized her skillset to the utmost degree. To sum it up:

“Utilizing motion control to shoot the available 45 pre-production models , Sophie shot twenty passes–moving the phones along in each pass. The Paranoid Design Studio team then assembled the passes, tracked animated characters and environmental drawings, and composited them into the scenes.”

Givin’ Up

GIVIN_UP

Lifelong Friendship Society crafts an existential allegory of angst for One Eskimo in a new music video, Givin’ Up. With a finely tuned color-palette, minimal illustration style and expressive animation, they tell an emotionally charged story of an abstract character that journeys through puzzle-like scenes of conveyor belts, revolving doors, and an ever-changing landscape of new challenges. Is it a game? Is it work? Can he keep going? Will he just give up? The two-man team of Creative Director / Designer Travis Spangler and Animator Sid Seed made quite a strong short film for One Eskimo, responding to the emotion in the song and coming up with a cohesive vision that fits its mood of melancholy and frustration.

Christian Borstlap Stripes for Stamps

ZEGELFILM

Christian Borstlap recently finished these deliciously simple animated illustrations for Dutch children’s charity, Kinderpostzegels.
Paul Postma did a great job of bringing Christian’s colourful illustrations to life, complimenting them with a playfully restrained animation style to really let their personalities shine.

If you have a spare minute I recommend taking some time to look through Christian’s recently update portfolio of loveliness.

Baptiste Sola: L’échange (The Exchange)

Although the end falls just a little flat for me, I’m still in love with Baptiste Sola’s “L’échange.” It’s a brilliant testament to a kind of Mondrian-esque minimalism, showing just how much can be said with so little.

The main drivers of narrative here are the sound design; slight variations in animation (the square’s ever so subtle hesitation is loaded with meaning); and, of course, the introduction of the pink square. Everyone who’s had a pink square in their lives know how they can so happily upset your routine, how they stick with you, how they keep you up at night.

L’échange reminds me a bit of Grant Orchard’s “Love Sport” series, which used a similar minimalist approach.
