The Nature Between Us

nature-between-us

Back in 2007, as students at the Savannah College of Art and Design, William Campbell teamed up with Anh Vu to create The Lemon Tree, an experimental short film that went on to win awards and launch Will and Anh’s careers with a bang. (Anh graduated to work with Psyop as a staff designer, while Will went to work with Superfad in LA.)

Will’s latest short film, The Nature Between Us, is a surreal tale of personal relationships told in a style that is uniquely his own. The film premiered at Sundance 2009 and screened at SXSW 2009, charming audiences with its mysterious narrative and off-beat bubble gum visuals.

Will and producer Jett Steiger graciously took some time to answer our questions about the project. Read on…

Passion Pictures’ Pete Candeland welcomes The Beatles to Rock Band

rockband
It was no surprise when I learned the new spot for The Beatles: Rockband was directed by Pete Candeland of Passion Pictures, director of The Gorillaz music videos and done the past two Rock Band openers (1 & 2).

The illustrations and designs are gorgeous, the transitions are seamless and the piece builds momentum to the very end. Not only does the energy of the piece build, but so do the complexity of the animation techniques themselves. We start off in an illustrated, cut out world and wind up in a fully immersing Psyop-esque jam fest. By the end of the video I had to keep rewinding to catch all the references.

Enjoy.

Onesize: OFFF 2009 Sponsor Titles

As festival season makes its way around the globe, we are hit with an annual slew of exceptional, experimental (no pun intended) work from some of our most talented shops and individuals.

This time around we’ve got Onesize coming strong with the Sponsor Titles for OFFF Lisbon, 2009. This ambitious, 8 minute piece walks us through a countless number of classic and unexpected 3D type experiments. I encourage you to stick around until the end!

An Eastern-Block archival video vibe sets the mood, while an impressive cameo from Onesize’s own Head of 3D (Harm van Zon) brings narrative and humor to what could have become another piece of derivative shape/type-porn.

Be sure to check out some of behind-the-scenes extras as well.

Impactist: Parallelostory

For most people, the concept of an infinite number of parallel universes that encompass every possible outcome for any given situation brings to mind notions of impossibly long mathematical equations that describe our reality in the soulless terms of math and science.

For Portland-based Impactist, it brings to mind love.

“Parallelostory” uses charmingly simple illustrations to weave an inter-dimensional tale of attraction. As always, Impactist (a.k.a. Kelly Meador and Daniel Elwing) created everything in this short, including the music. It perfectly sums up their hand-made aesthetic and delightful sensitivity to color and form.

QuickTime version available on the Impactist site.
