My name is Josh and I am currently a Junior at Purdue University of Indiana. I am studying Computer Graphics Technology, and would love to do Visual Effects for commercials, movies, etc.
Any advice for a newbie in the field of VFX? Also, are they any good internship ideas that you could throw at me. I’ll be randomly commenting on threads and start becoming more and more active as the months go on. Thank you so much for your time.

I have four years of experience freelancing as a compositor with commercial an promos outside of the UK.
So if anybody could give me some guidelines it would be great. I’m having a meeting next week and doesn’t want to make a fool out of myself…
Thanks
I’m going to school for CG, and I’m going to major in compositing. I’d like to get into documentaries or advertising when I get out of school. Mainly stuff for broadcasting.
Is there anything in particular that I could work on for my reel that might help me get into either these industries? Any types of shots/scenes that would show off my compositing skills?
Thanks,
Wesley Ortiz
For the past yr I’ve been working as a Digital Image Retoucher at a busy photographic studio, I am now trying to make the transition into a freelance compositor and I’d like to ask some advice:
I gained heaps of skills in photoshop, everyday I had a different request from clients including:
– Removing braces.
– Fixing glasses focus so that refraction & reflection doesn’t occur.
– Removing table in foreground (requiring me to paint in legs and feet).
– Removing ex husband from family intergrated group shot.
– Making legs, arms, behinds thinner using warp tool (quite a common request).
– Head and face replacements (normally there are 1 or 2 people blinking or looking away in group shots).
– Scar/tatoo removal.
& more.
Ok so now I am working on a compositing showreel, the problem is I can’t exactly use anything I worked on as they are all still images so I’ve been working on my own shots which is taking some time.
Anyone else come from a image retoucher or photographic path and what should i look for in transitioning my skills from still to moving images? (besides obviously tracking…)
Thanks in advance!

if anyone has advice on locating a project of this kind, I’d greatly appreciate it; I browsed through the short film section of this site..,and there were a few recruitement requests (I’ll continue searching), but perhaps there are other ways to connect
to see some character stuff i’ve done, go to www.tempsketches.blogspot.com

Well im finally packing my bags and leaving my little place of residence in NZ for bigger pastures, namely London since it’s very simple for kiwi’s to get a work visa there. However im wondering if theres a good time/bad time work wise.
In wellington, working as a freelancer I find Jan thru march to be very very quiet. (Luckily this is summer time and a good chance to take a holiday!!), while the rest of the year is non stop busy.
So I’m wondering if the same thing happens in the UK. Are there "seasons" of work, or is it pretty much constant for feature work?
And if this happens in other cities, feel free to contribute. I’m always interested in hearing how it works in other places 😀
