Passion Pictures: Red Bull Music Academy World Tour

If you’ve got a month-long tour of events spanning from Berlin to Toronto, from Melbourne to Detroit, how do you visually convey the magnitude of the event? How about hiring a whole team of artists to collaborate on a mixed-media hommage that moves from city to city, hopping from style to style, to reflect the range of locations and music they’re celebrating, while Sammy Bananas seamlessly provides the soundtrack?

For the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy World Tour, Mother New York and Passion Pictures created a short tribute for each of the 10 cities. Led by Pete Candeland, the talented team of directors blended 2D, 3D, stop-motion, photography, illustration and CG. I’m most impressed with the many co-directors and art directors that got credited and the creative freedom to run with their respective sections.

An interesting model for sure, and it sounds like they had a lot of fun as well. Read on for some insight into the process.

Against All Odds/XYZ Studios for Victorian Government

UPDATE: Full Credit List available after the jump.

Hooray for Melbourne! Thumbs up for the Victorian Government for commissioning this lovely animated spot–such a welcome change from their usually live-action based pieces. This one is directed by Against All Odds via XYZ studios for Grey Melbourne. My favourite bit is the facial expressions these characters have (especially the lady). The claymation look and tilt-shift treatment may not be new, but it’s delightful nevertheless.

I sincerely hope this is a sign that the Australian clients and public are sharing their love more equally between all-things-animated and all-things-live-action….

Mighty Nice: Melbourne Writers Festival

mighty nice type

Typographic animation, it’s everywhere. You now get a free typographic animation with a box of breakfast cereal, and word has it that there’s an iPhone app for turning your shopping list into a twirling maelstrom of typographic glee. Apparently, Gary Busey is planning to turn himself into a typographic animation for an installation piece at The Whitney…

Anyhow, the point is that here at Motionographer Glades we kind of now feel that a typo animation now has to be pretty special to make the cut—which is definitely the case with this new cinema spot from Mighty Nice for The Melbourne Writers Festival.

Says Mighty Nice’s Darren Price:, “JWT Melbourne came to us with a straight brief: to animate type as it gets read by a voice over. Each genre of writing would see a change in the style of typography.”

And so it does. Type styles were meticulously mapped out by Mighty Nice’s art director, Softly Dunstan, who then contracted swine flu and dropped out of the picture, leaving the boys in charge.

“By the time the art director returned to the task,” says Price, “there were little girls turning into skeletons, spaceships and zombie hands added to the mix.”

What really surprised me is that all the voice over tracks were recorded by the authors themselves. The horror author sounds creepy, romance writer sounds sexy and the sci-fi author makes a great android… amazing.
