Advice for building a computer for Houdini/Realflow work??

Hey Folks

I want to build a computer from newegg for around $2,000. The main applications I will be running are Houdini and Realflow. I will be doing mostly fluid and particle simulations. Any suggestions for a good setup?

Thanks

Chris

Tezro Booot Problems

Anybody out there still running a Tezro? Stop laughing.

OK anyway, after a 5 hour power outage the other day (long enough that battery power died) our Tezro won’t come up. The LCD screen shows the following messages:
001c01
Prom Booting
(then after a minute or so)
Gfx Cfg Err

Things we have tried so far:
Disconnected the box / blew out the dust / reseated the boards / reconnected everything. No effect.
Swapped out the mouse & keyboard (I read somewhere online to try this). No effect.
Swapped out the outboard DMediaPro box. No effect.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point as this box is ancient and out of any kind of warranty…

Da Vinci System

Hey everyone,

I have been working in 3D animation and effects for companies for about 9 years now. Most of the work I have done has involved 3D work in Maya and simple(ish) compositing in After Effects. Recently I began working on VFX gigs on my own and have quickly realized that what works really well for 3D alone, doesn’t necessarily work for the best for Compositing, Editing etc.

At the moment I am a one man shop and would like to purchase a system that (While not fully optimized for any one task) works pretty well for the main hit points of a VFX pipeline. I have read quite a few posts on this site (Awesome!) and have a decent idea of what works well, but couldn’t really find anything that describes my Da Vinci needs. Mainly that I am doing a bit of everything and need a system to do it pretty well across the board.

Here is my understanding of what I should be looking at.

3D:

1. Best Processor I can afford and a mobo that supports it.
2. Good Graphics card (Quadro FX?) Any other recommendations?
3. at least 16 of RAM?
4. Enough fast storage to handle HD mult-channel EXR render passes.

Compositing:

1. I would imagine the Proc from the 3D side will work here as well, though probably not as required as is for 3D rendering.
2. Obviously the more RAM the better?
3. What part does GFX play in something like AE, Nuke?
4. Fast eSATA drives with hardware raid 5?

Capture / Editing:

For Editing I imagine that having fast hard drives is the way to go for real-time playback. What in the way of cards do I need to get those kinds of data rates. I will likely be using Premiere for editing or (if I go Mac Pro) Final Cut.

I don’t do much in the way of capture at the moment, but will be doing more soon. What is the best setup for capturing from something like RED, Cannon DSLR’s, Cannon HD DV tape? For tapes I will need a deck of some kind but how does Processor, Hard drives, GFX, RAM play into this.

I will likely be building my own 64bit Windows 7 Box as the cost of doing so will be much cheaper than a Mac Pro. However, I do really like OS X and wouldn’t mind going that route if the cost point/ return actually makes sense.

I have also read about using SSD drives for the OS drive and cache drive. Would I use this for all (live) projects copied from other fast storrage drives? Or simply use this for doing complex nuke/AE/Maya cacheing?

I hope what I am looking for makes sense to everyone. Overall I am not looking for the best 3D, best Compositing, best Editing system out there. Just a system that will do all three as well as I can for a decent price.

Thanks everyone!

I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

FCP Render Question. Help Appreciated.

Hi

First Time Poster.

Please could someone suggest a few render farm options on the market that I can use for final cut pro and after effects. I need to compress 1000 fcp timelines into quick time compressions and convert 400 digi beta tapes to pro res.

Thanks

quick render.

need stereoscoptic workstation

Hi noob question. Can anyone recommend a good setup for a workstation that can handle Maya and compositing in nuke. I currently have quadro 3800 but Im not sure if I need shutter glasses or just polarized glasses. Do I need the 3d vision pro setup? Also whats a good production stereo monitor display? Thanks

Mac Graphics Card Upgrade Question

I have a MacPro 3,1 with a geforce 8800GT in it…the card is starting to show its age. The only upgrade cards Apple has available is the GT120 which is worse than what I have, the ATI 5770 which is a lot better, and the ATI 5870 which is a LOT LOT better.

Anyone have any of these cards that could make an informed suggestion…or maybe even someone that knows of a PC card that works amazingly in a Mac? I have read that the ATI 6970 will run on Bootcamp but not on Mac side….so that would be great to have the added support in Windows…but I really want the power Mac side too…but the 5870 is a 2 year old card and at this point pretty outdated.

Also if anyone knows of a way to force Mac to work with a better card, like the 6970 or preferably an Nvidia card I am all ears!

second hand mac pro?

Hi guys,

I’m playing with the idea to buy a second hand mac pro from ebay.
Do you guys have any experience with this? Are there any extra customs for second hand stuff from the US to EU?

Thanks,

cineform problem.!

hi
i have 2k editing hardware with cineform as codec because of the si-2k shots.
but my playback has problems in frame dropping unless i downgrade the playback of my premiere to1/4 and lose a lot of data.
the playback on windows is okay.
…my system is in bellow descriptions:
cpu: intel xeon e5430 2.66ghz *2
8gig of ddr3 ram
64bit os 7
quadrofx 4500 nvidia graphic gpu
and my cineform is :neo 4k 3d 5.2
….
p.s:
every time i re-open my projects all my cache media files are being re produced and looks like premiere can not hold my cache , and it only happens on cineform si-2k files
