Five reasons why Japanese Spider-Man is better than regular Spider-man

  1. Japanese Spider-man fights giant half-dinosaur-half-robots from space
  2. Japanese Spider-man’s “Eyes sparkle with a flash of anger” (according to the theme song)
  3. Japanese Spider-man rides a kick-ass dirt bike
  4. Japanese Spider-man can summon a giant robot Spider-Man from it’s underground hangar using his web shooter
  5. Japanese Spider-man’s giant robot shoots out an awesome Spider-Man race car from it’s chest for Japanese Spider-Man to ride around in

The Onion Gets Visual Effects-y With Obama Motion Capture

You know that Visual Effects has truly come into it’s own as a cultural phenom when there’s a story about it in The Onion. It’s like being a musician and having your song cover by “Weird” Al Yancovic. I have to hand it to The Onion writing staff for doing there homework though. The article talks about Vicon, a real life mo-cap company. and it features this quote.

“Our 78-person team is committed to capturing each and every nuance of the Obama administration,” Vicon CEO Douglas Reinke said. “Years from now, historians will be able to access high-quality images of what the former president might have looked like while he was, say, meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff on April 3, 2009, or tying his shoelaces on the afternoon of June 3, 2011.”

Get this, Douglas Reinke really is the CEO of Vicon. You gotta love well researched fake news.

Valerie Pirson : Coca-Cola “Two Guys”

coke-two-guys

Partizan’s Valerie Pirson (commercial reel) put her analogue sensibilities to good use in this chuckle-worthy spot for Coca-Cola and agency Weiden+Kennedy Portland. Using a grab-bag of stop-action techniques, Valerie pumped personality into the spot’s lo-fi aesthetics.

Stimmung’s Skeleton Suit enchanced the tongue-in-cheek melodrama with some great sound design, and Brand New School’s graphics are the tasteful cherry on top.

Forget Benjamin Button – Pistol Youth Does The Golden Girls

Pistol Youth – In My Eyes from Pistol Youth on Vimeo.

Face replacement guerilla style. Weird thing is, Bea Arthur actually looks less man-ish in this clip than she did in the show.

Alien Grey: Zone – X : You Have To See It To Believe It

So, if I had recently escaped an exploding toy plane, the force of which failed to even muss someone’s hair, and was being stalked by a madman. I still would not go past the sign that told me I was entering an area inhibited by lethal Alien Grey’s. Alas, this is the case with the poor hapless souls trapped in the “film” Alien Grey:Zone-X. There are plenty of things to like about this trailer. A dude fighting a mech-spider with some sort of mop that deflects laser beams. Aliens that can’t seem to stop floating around people and bothering them to death. Oh, don’t forget the Alien’s greatest ally, the T-Rex. This flick is gonna be great!

Star Wars: Retold (by someone who hasn’t seen it) from Joe Nicolosi on Vimeo.

Caught this vid on Nmancer’s TekLog and the sad thing is, it’s better than all the prequels.

Chris Dane Owen’s VFX Tour de’ Force

Alright, this is just to good to be true. I can’t stop watching this and thinking to myself “This is why so many smart folks spent years of their lives conceiving of, and building computer graphics hardware and software”. It seems that the entirety of our industry has culminated into this single event. The release of Chris Dane Owen’s “Shine on Me” music video. Do you like “porn quality” lighting and costumes? How about split screen swordplay? Throw in a healthy dose of stock footage, a lime green guitar and some flying dragons that look stiffer than CG guy in a Yoga class and you’ve got yourself one heck of a…

Well, I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s 100% pure awesome. Chris’ website credits “Academy Award winning special effects artist Robert Short” as the Director. Roberts’ IMDB profile shows a long list of credits for special effects make-up and VFX work. It does not explain how the incredible Lando-style mustache that Chris wears in the video was created. I’ll keep checking the website for a special features section.
