Bavaria Beer “Drop”

Amsterdam-based agency Selmore selected Matthijs van Heijningen (Bonkers) to direct this epic tale of a water drop’s lifelong mission to join his breathren as a pint of Bavaria Beer. While the denouement in chuckle-worthy and nicely paced, the real replay value comes from the lush CG work from Eight VFX. Each scene is fully realized and full of nearly tangible depth.

As an aside: the concept reminds me of a bit of a photo-realistic retelling of the oft-admired Guinness “Dot” spot from Psyop and agency IIBBDO Dublin.

Mathieu Gerard: Steel Life

For his master thesis at Arts et Technologies de l’Image, Mathieu Gérard created “Steel Life,” a breathtaking tapestry of textures and light that evokes themes of genesis and rebirth.

While there’s no obvious narrative, the film uses abstract realism—lovingly rendered imagery inspired by nature—to build an associative network of ideas. The lush soundtrack, composed by Mathieu Alvado and performed by the Star Pop Orchestra, adds a dramatic arc to the film.

Also check out the breakdowns in Gérard’s making-of film.

“Steel Life” will be screened at F5.

TEG/Bearfight + Sehsucht: Tetley “Red”

tetley-red3

The Ebeling Group has expanded its family with the addition of London-based Bearfight, a collective headed up by Christopher Hewitt (formerly DSTRUKT).

To herald their arrival, Bearfight and TEG have released “Red,” a lyrical spot for Tetley Tea and agency John St./Toronto. The spot was co-directed by Hamburg studio Sehsucht, whose technical prowess helped achieve the breathtaking inky simulations that drive the project. The concept’s a bit well-worn, but the execution alone is worth celebrating.

UPDATE: After doing a bit of research, I’ve learned that Bearfight didn’t exist at the time of the spot’s production. Chris Hewitt did indeed work on the spot while at Sehsucht—just not under the name of Bearfight.
