Item Idem

testpatterneoniplasticoatbyitemidem

We don’t fully know how to describe artist, designer, bon vivant: Item Idem, but we definitely have plus size boners for the art he makes. His wiki describes him as: ”Austin Powers pretending to be Philippe Starck, art directed by Marcel Duchamp and scripted by Oscar Wilde“. There’s really an endless amount of things to go through on his website and by the time you reach the end you’ll feel slightly cheapened and a little made-fun-of. But overall, if we had to describe a theme it would be: Item-Idem subtly says fuck you, disneyland. But that’s just our take away.

Chanel No. 5 by Jean-Pierre Jeunet

The NYTimes blog, The Moment, has a great post taking you through the history of the Chanel No. 5 short film series that began back in 1960 with Richard Avendon and Vicky Hilber, progressed through the 70s with Catherine Deneuve and culminated with Baz Luhrmann’s Nicole Kidman epic. Always coupling a fantastic director with an iconic beauty, Jeunet’s take is no different with his muse, Audrey Tautou, featured in the latest film. Go directly to Jeunet’s film HERE or to the Moment’s Chanel tribute HERE.

“You walk for me, walk for me, walk for me”

hoodbyair09

I’m not the one to speak authoritatively on NYC gay culture, but any movement that throws vogueing, 90’s vocal house, men’s leggings, Gucci Mane, happy hardcore & 2-step into a homo-thug blender AND makes sense out of it, is kinda-sorta killing it in every aspect of creativity. Our friend, Patrik North of Acéphale Recs, has been putting me up on what’s been brewing in this scene and I gotta say— I’m pretty gay for it.

If there was to be a unifying aesthetic in this “scene”, it would probably be fashion house, Hood By Air. You might be topically familiar with their designs via H & LA’s “Banjee” tank:

Their S/S ‘09 Lookbook has been up for a minute now, so go check it out.

On the music front, there’s Kingdom:

& House of Ladosha:

As per the description listed above, I don’t really know how to describe Kingdom’s music other than actually being a literal shit-mix of 90’s vocal house, Gucci Mane, happy hardcore & 2-step. All I do really know is that he likes fractals… a lot. Fader describes House of Ladosha as being “the long lost northern kin of Crime Mob”. I’m pretty confident that doesn’t even begin to sum it up… but take a look and see if you can figure it out for yourself.

DISCOFUNBATH

Our favorite fashion blog has been stepping it up a bunch lately since it’s big move to NY and at this rate it won’t be long before DISCOFUNBATH becomes ground zero for finding out how cuffed pants, bowties, and the Art Ensemble Of Chicago all go together. Also be on the look out for a new project that WMIG and DISCOFUNBATH are working on together.

Carolina Melis

carolina-melis2

Director/illustrator/designer Carolina Melis (with Nexus Productions) has been quietly tinkering with her site for a while now, but we recently got the green light to share it with the world.

Carolina’s portfolio—and I mean all of it, not just the motion work—is a sheer joy to behold. By following her muse through whatever medium it dictates, Carolina has developed a distinctive voice that’s as playful as it is sophisticated.

Characters are both the stars and the medium of Carolina’s work.  They trot about the screen while simultaneously acting as design elements, pleasantly blurring the line between figure and ground.

Carolina’s background in dance and choreography is evident in her work. Through repetition and rhythm, simple forms coalesce to form complex compositions that augment the soundtracks in nearly all her projects.

With that in mind, don’t miss Carolina’s abstract video for Efterklang’s “Polygyne.” (It’s only mentioned in the News section of her site.) And keep an eye on Galinanova, a fashion and design project that draws on Carolina’s Sardinian roots.
