Steve

Scratch and others for HD broadcast.

I am in the process of evaluating online systems, ideally something with 2k+ DI capabilities, proper luts etc.. and the ability to do RT Color Correction.

I want something like smoke/lustre combo, but I can’t afford $500,000 worth of gear, and the RT desktop DI is getting very close to being a reality.

Pure CC’s won’t work for me like Speedgrade, since I need tools like repo, pan/scan, flip, flop etc..

I know a lot of people are content with the Scratch for film DI and CC, which can be a slower process, but what about broadcast? How are people working with Scratch on a SAN, so a motion graphics artist or compositor can work on DPX files that are read to be loaded into the Scratch?

Are people finding the Scratch a decent option to Lay off to tape?

Can you conform via a VTR with Scratch?

We are going to have one Apple Color/FCP Kona3 with Gluetools online station as well, so I know those systems can digitize DPX.

I’m just trying to get a feeling for people using a Scratch for Broadcast.

History of my DI studio part 2

This next video is part 2 of 3. It covers looking into the machines that we own 2k/4k film scanners and recorders.enjoy.

color grading cost

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure on how much it would cost to grade a 100 minute feature w/ an experienced colorist using Apple color?

Lets say I use a Red One camera, 2k resolution, average number of edits, in the Atlanta, GA area.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,
S.

We have a pretty exciting lineup again this month.

Avid will demo their completely new workflow and show a path from editorial to finishing. This process involves dailies transcoded via Metafuze or RedRushes to DNxHD, HD editorial in Media Composer with a full finish in native R3D in Avid DS. Don’t miss this exclusive pre-NAB workflow demo.

This month’s door prize is the latest Avid Media Composer Software V3.5 courtesy of Avid Technology. This $2,495 professional editor is available for both Windows XP and Mac OSX (computer not included).

Pictorvision Inc will be demonstrating the use of the RED ONE in their Wescam gyro stabilized aerial camera systems, as well as giving a basic primer on what you need know when planning for aerial shooting.

Camera Essentials
will show the RED ONE ‘Desert’ dust and light rain cover as well as the heavy duty RED ONE Weather Protector.

Director Sandy Collora and DP Ed Gutentag who met last year at RED Los Angeles User Group will be screening scenes from their feature film “Hunter Prey” at the Members’ Showcase.

Scott Snare will moderate the Owners’ Circle. This forum will provide the RED ONE owners with an opportunity to discuss various RED related topics in person. The Owners’ Circle is open to all RED LAUG members whether or not they actually own a RED ONE.

We may have a couple more announcements in the coming weeks.

photochemical noob

maybe im too young and naive, but up till now every film i have worked on has had a DI. now this current project im comping on has a photochemical delivery. i guess im too spoiled with technology but im completely clueless with this method of doing things. i wonder if some of you could give me guidelines for working in a photochem pipeline.

i dont see how i can get a LUT, but how do i have any idea what my shots will look like on film?

how do i get my VFX shots to match the color of the rest of the scene?

We’re excited to announce that Digital Vision will be sponsoring the breakfast at the January 10th meeting. Digital Vision will be demonstrating RED workflow with Film Master in Kappa’s new DI bay. Film Master is one of the handful of systems capable of importing RED RAW files.

Curtis Harris, the video specialist at Melrose Mac, will be discussing storage options and backup when dealing with tapeless formats such as RED. He will be discussing in detail the different RAID types, and when to use them, as well as why it is absolutely critical to have a backup strategy such as LTO backup.

These are only two of the presenters who will speak and demonstrate their RED products to the group at the next meeting. Please stay tuned for more announcements soon.
