COMPOSITOR-ART???

HI i am 14 years old. To be a VFX Production Coordinator do you need to have an art in any sort? I am rubbish at art, but i dont want that to stop me into going into vfx. 😡

Help on a tracking shot.

I’m trying to do this 3d track on a shot and I don’t know where to proceed from here. I filmed two actors walking up to the edge of a bridge overlooking a city. I more or less successfully tracked the shot in Synth Eyes creating a garbage matte for the actors etc. to the point where a test cube looks like it’s sitting pretty decent in the scene.

Now what I want to do is replace the scenery past the bridge withe a matte painting. This will probably have to be a 3d matte painting because I want to have the camera fly out from the bridge into the matte/background as a transition from the last filmed frames.

I know I’ll have to roto out the actors for each frame they’re over the background but my question is how can I line up and properly project my background in conjunction with my footage in Maya?

Forgive me if my explanation is confusing and thanks in advance for any replies.

What type of computer do I need?

I am seriously getting into the whole vfx thing. I have watched tons of tutorials (video copilot) and I have After Effects on my computer.

I will generally be learning and practising everything for my own personal use, but who knows, if I get really good on it, I might look to go into as a career. I am really enjoying it.

I also have the Foundry’s Nuke X and 3DS Max.

I am thinking about buying all the video copilot prodcuts too.

However I really need some advice on my computer. I don’t even know what I am suppose to list to you guys. Really sorry but i would appreciate it if you could google it and tell me if my specs are good or not.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A300 21H.

Can anyone tell me if this is good enough for what all these software programs and for stuff I want to be doing. I guess mainly After Effects stuff like what the video copilot guys do (but I would also like to learn a 3D software program and start using that.

Can my laptop handle it?

Can it handle all the video copilot products I am about to purchase?

If it is not good enough can I modify my laptop to be better? Increase its potential.

Or do I ‘NEED’ to buy a new laptop? I really don’t want to, but I would atleats like the advice on what to get and how much it will cost?

Just any and all info you can give me would be helpful. Thanks so much.

Shake 4.1

Do you need an apple mac or computer to use shake? they are all very expensive in london.

A Weekend Composite with AE Expressions

Hi guys, here is a small composite i did this weekend (took a break from my busy schedule). Yup, i know we’ve seen many Death Stars hovering over cities before (but not on mine). So i put one in mine.

The new thing that i tried was using expressions for the first time to animate the clock seen in the composite. For those of you who wanna know (i dunno if this is the right forum to post it) here is how i did it:

Create black solid.
Precompose it (not necessarily, but its neat). Open the precomposed comp.
Create a Text layer.
Alt + Click the Source Text option’s stopwatch and enter the following code:

var sec = Math.floor(time);

// Mod sec by 60 else it will keep counting.
var secM = Math.floor(sec % 60);

// Function to get a double digit for numbers less than 10
function appendZeros(Number)
{
var finNum;
if(Number < 10)
{
finNum = "0" + Number;
}
else
{
finNum = Number;
}
return finNum;
}

// Replace "14" as per your choice
"14" + ":" + appendZeros(secM)

Done.

power of fusion

hi friends,

Null in AE

What are nulls in After Effects? What are they used for?

Depth Of Field Greenscreen Vehicle

Need expertise on a GREENSCREEN challenge we are shooting.
We will be doing tests yet but would like advise.

We are shooting a "interior vehicle" in greenscreen studio.
A Driver in frontseat, Two passengers in backseat.

They want to achieve a SHALLOW Depth of Field between the actors — Driver in Focus, and Backseat Passengers out of focus.

Typically I would not veer from shooting all as a clean key.
However, shooting 3 plates & adding post DOF might not be the way to go?
I feel comping various could be an issue due to any interaction between the actors…

Thoughts?

What good vfx softwares are good before you start looking into the depth of Nuke. shake is too expensive and so are adobe effects. What do you begin with:)
