Should I start a career in VFX?

Hey all,

Long time lurker, I would love your feedback.

I’m 24 years old and I want to direct sci-fi/fantasy feature films one day. I am working on developing my portfolio as a commercial and music video director but while I do that I need something that can pay the rent and keep me fed.

I’ve limited my options down to three, VFX Artist (Lighter/Compositor, working my way up to VFX Supervisor), Animator (Working up to Directing Animator or Supervising Animator) and Editor (Working up to Editor of major features).

My questions are:

1) Which of the above career paths is best for me to work on, that will best transition me to directing? I know a lot of Animators (Andrew Stanton, Pete Doctor, Shane Acker), VFX Supervisors (Tim Miller, Eric Brevig, Neil Blomkamp) and a few editors (The Coen Brothers). Is any one better for the type of films I want to make?

2) Are any one of those disciplines better for me to learn in order to make the type of films I want to make?

3) Are any one of those careers easier or harder to advance? Are any of them far more competitive than the others?

I realize that if I want to direct I need to go out and direct, and I am doing that. But, until I get paid to direct, I need something that I enjoy doing and I enjoy all three of these.

Just looking for some feedback from the community. 🙂

Career Advice – To become a lighter? VFX or Modeling

Hi guys,

I need some advices and answers to my suspiciousness before I go a step

further to my future career.

I just started my 3D study in my 30’s and I am loving it.

I am about to decided my stream next month, either vfx or modeling.

The problem is that I love both of them, particularly lighting.

I feel so awesome when I see lighted and rendered image of my model.

My friends suggests me that I should take vfx stream instead of modeling to

become a lighter. So my concerns are :

1) If I take modeling stream, isn’t there any way that I can be a lighter at all?

2) And I heard once I graduate, only job I may get is a shot prep as a step stone

to lighter so I was looking for infos about that entry level job, but couldn’t find

enough. What is the difference between shot prep and junior lighter?

3) Is there many jobs for lighters in the industry? I’ve been seeing many job

posts, but didn’t see many lighting jobs on the list.

As a responsible husband and a future father at age of 30’s I really need

valuable advices from you guys.

Hope you guys have wonderful weekends.

Cheers.

Starting a Production Company

Okay im in currently am studying Electronic Media and Raymond Walters College in Ohio. E Media is basically everything from web design to graphic design to animation, photography, and cinematography. It is a descent program and we have had many students get offered jobs from big tv stations such as ESPN and MTV. i havent yet taken video production classes but i know the basics. I know what your thinking its a dumb idea for me to do this. Well i am 19 now and have been using photoshop since i was in the fifth grade so like when i was like 10. I know animation, photography, and graphic design. I think i know enough without school to do this and i already have a list of clients "whom im producing music videos for free to get my name out there" despite my lack of a video portfolio. Basically what I need to know is what equipment I will be needing.

What I have

  • 24 inch iMac "2 generations before the iseries processors. the last one they made with a black plastic back.
  • first i series maxed out Macbook Pro 17"
  • Canon 7D
  • around 7 lenses
  • Final Cut and CS5 master collection
  • friends

I think that should be a sufficient start right?:D

What i need to know is like things like Raid drives are they needed or what? Any advice on what else i would need would be greatly appreaciated.

Im thinking about names i have a really really clever name that im trying to get LLC on it or something not sure about the legal jazz yet.

Which is another thing i could need help with.
Any examples or starter tips for legal documents i would need?
I know this is more of a vfx site but i figure everyone here will still be able to help or does some input and ideas my way.

Thanks,
Patrick

Problem with iso and lighting on greenscreen

i Have a problem with the material i have received. The problem is that the supervisor has not thought through their shots.

So i have a greenscreen material that barely has lighting, and camera that have a way to high iso value.

So I wonder if you have any tips and tricks on what to do if you have greenscreen shot that are not illuminated and a iso value that is so high that the shots has extremely high noise in the background.

(and i haven’t reall time to roto out every shot becuase it is a ten minute film)

All tips and tricks are appreciated

Thanks in advance

How does one land their first job as a junior compositor in London?

Hi all!

I’m new to post production and am learning Nuke with a view to getting a job as a junior compositor. With so many entry level jobs being outsourced, those few entry level jobs that still remain require at least 6 months commercial experience. Chicken and egg

How does one land their first job as a junior compositor in London?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Tony

OSX Which 3D software for general 3D

Hello,

I’m an editor/compositor/motion graphics/flash animator/jack of all trades-master of none.

My employer has said to me that I need to learn 3D so I’m looking for some direction. What is the best/quickest general 3D software to learn?

I mostly work in After Effects and Premiere Pro. Currently I am on a PC but I believe I’ll be switching to OSX soon. Mostly, I think I’ll be using it for motion graphics type stuff.

I’m in Toronto so I’m also looking for some advice on where the best place to learn it is. Con-ed night school course would be good.

Cheers, Thanks in advance.

How to Query a Bounding Box for an object

Hello people,

I am new to MEL scripting and I am working on a small project in Maya. I am trying to get the bounding box information in MAYA by using xform command, however it’s giving a syntax error or a message which says invalid use of maya object bounding box.

I tried this command in MEL:
float $dummy[]=’xform -bb pCubeShape1′; and it says syntax error. 🙁

Can anyone over here help me with a simple command.

Thanks in advance!
