The sequel to the 1982 masterpiece “Blade Runner”, which was set in a fictional dystopian 2019 Los Angeles. will not be directed by Ridley Scott.  Denis Villeneuve, the director of the critically acclaimed “Prisoners”, is now in negotiations to direct Harrison Ford in the “Blade Runner” sequel for Alcon Entertainment.

The yet unnamed sequel will take place several decades after the original, and will be penned by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. Ford, who will reprise his role as Rick Deckard, recently claimed that it was the “best thing he’s ever read.”

“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on ‘Prisoners,’” Kosove and Johnson said in a joint statement. “Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

The French Canadian director, Villeneuve is best known for gritty thrillers such as his work on the 2013 “Prisoners”. He was also nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award in 2011 for “Incendies”.  His next film “Sicario” stars Emily Blunt and Benecio Del Toro will be released later this year.
