Gurugram, Bangalore and Pune have the potential to become a GPO hub: Lakshya Digital

The Indian gaming sector is witnessing surge in growth with the increasing number of game creation to catering large audience. Today on one hand where cost of game creation is escalating in China on the other hand, India has emerging as the hub for gaming process outsourcing (GPO) activity, catering to top gaming markets such as US and Japan, among others. 15 years ago, the average cost of developing a console game was anywhere between $1-2 million, today the same game is developed at around $25-30 million even more. Around 60 per cent of the cost of development of a game is about its art and animation.

Lakshya Digital CEO and co- founder Manvendra Shukul

In conversation with  AnimationXpress Lakshya Digital CEO and co- founder Manvendra Shukul shares various aspect on why India is becoming hub for GPO. Here is the excerpt:

What is gaming process outsourcing (GPO)?

Gaming Process Outsourcing (GPO), as the name proposes, is the outsourcing of various processes that are required for the development and advancement of a game, to third party companies which are specialised in the process. Some of the processes involved in game development that are outsourced to third party specialist companies are sound creation, art creation, programming, testing and so on.

Video games consolidate components like art, design, code, and audio to make complex, engaging and intuitive entertainment products. The development cycle incorporates various aspects that are typically divided into three phases -pre-production, production, and post-production.Pre-production involves activities like game design, concept art creation and prototyping. The major development work takes place in the production phase which includes creation of art assets, level creation, programming, audio creation and testing. The post-production phase mainly consists of activities like bug fixing, localisation and maintenance. It also involves the creation and release of additional game content in the form of Downloadable Content or DLC. Game Development is a complex process it requires tens of millions of dollars along with large teams of highly skilled people. Outsourcing helps to overcome many of the challenges associated with cost and talent

How big is the GPO space in India and its growth potential?

The Indian gaming industry is approximately valued at over $890 million (approximately Rs 6000 crore) and accounts for roughly 1 per cent of the global gaming industry and is poised to become one of the world’s leading markets in the gaming sector.India took its baby steps into this space around a decade and a half back – the same time when Lakshya Digital was formed. However, we have done amazingly well from that point on and we are remarkably close to prevailing players in this space.

The development capability of GPO industry is a lot like the BPO industry in India and owes a lot to the availability of a large trained talent pool in the nation at competitive rates. There are additional reasons like familiarity with the English language, inherent cultural flexibility of Indians and their ability to quickly absorb and engage with people of other cultures.

With the world’s largest population of youth (two-thirds of our 1.3 billion people are under the age of 35), abundant talent in programming and art, technical and creative skill sets and a professional aptitude to meet international game development needs at competitive costs, India has already begun its journey to becoming a GPO hub.

How India is positioned vis a vis its biggest competitor China in gaming art Industry?

About 10 to 12 years back China was one of the very few countries which had gaming studios providing Art and Animation outsourcing services. It was the largest and the go-to partner for global game developers and publishers. That was also the time when Indian gaming companies started providing these services. At that time clients hardly knew that India had companies providing these services, even if they did, they considered them as low skill, cheap sweat-shops. But since then, Indian gaming studios have come a long way and are now giving a tough competition to Chinese studios. In lot of cases taking business away from the Chinese studios. The quality of work happening in India currently compares to the best that is happening anywhere in the world, and not just China. In fact, we have reached a stage that the global publishers and developers prefer to work with India because of easier management and communication. Today, India has as much respect in the global games industry as any other country. During these COVID times too, Indian studios like Lakshya have been the fastest to recover and ensure that production comes back online in the shortest possible time, thus ensuring that the project timelines of our clients do not suffer. This further demonstrate the fact that besides delivering great quality, Indian studios have matured to a very high degree and have the most professional approach and mindset to ensure complete client satisfaction, inspite of trying circumstances. This places Indian studios like Lakshya amongst the most respected, globally, putting India on the global map, where China was a lone player till some time back.

What unique advantages does Gurugram, Bangalore and Pune offers to a GPO outfit like Lakshya?

Cities like Gurugram, Bangalore and Pune have a large pool of creative/art talent that permits us to address to a significant level the innovative prerequisites of the worldwide gaming industry. One reason for this abundance of talent is a huge number of good Art colleges in and around Gurugram, Bangalore and Pune. It is this ready availability of talent pool makes places like Gurugram and Pune top choices for us, allowing us to put together an exceptionally talented team to create best quality innovative art for some of the biggest gaming companies globally.

The strong IT setup and infrastructure of these cities is also one of the reasons that helps in functioning of a creative studio that has extremely high data management needs. The lessons and learnings of the sister BPO industry has helped the Game Art outsourcing companies of Gurugram, Bangalore & Pune in providing the best-in-class customer experience to clients.

Does India and specially Gurugram, Bangalore and Pune have the potential to become a GPO hub?

Absolutely. Gurugram, Bangalore and Pune have the potential to become a GPO hub.Infact they are well on their way with many international publishers and developers establishing their base in these cities. Following are the reasons for the same:

  • A large number of artists and programmers graduating every year and from art and tech institutes situated not only in Pune or Gurugram but also from neighboring states and metro cities like UP, Rajasthan, Mumbai, NCR and Punjab, and more.
  • These cities are already major IT hubs and have relatively good infrastructure compared to other cities.
  • These cities have good connectivity with the rest of the country because of the availability of different mode of transports.

What are the career opportunities for the youths in gaming art development industry?

A wide range of career options exist in the gaming industry, in disciplines as diverse as Design, Art, Programming, Testing, Project Management and many more.  Each discipline requires a distinct skill set and one can opt for a career in any discipline depending upon the skills and interests of the aspirant. Game Art, for example, which involves the creation of 2D and 3D graphics and animations (this includes all the interesting characters, exotic environments, exciting animations and so on that one sees in a game) is well suited for those with an interest and aptitude for visual arts.

There are varied job titles in the Game Art discipline, typical ones amongst which are:

Artist: This is a starting position and entails hands-on art creation under the supervision of a Lead Artist.

Senior Artist: These are experienced artists who have been in field for at least 4 to 5 years and typically are entrusted with the more complex art creation tasks on a project. They are expected to work independently (with minimal supervision or direction) and may sometimes be required to take one or two junior artists under their wings.

Lead Artist: They lead teams of artists in specific areas such as Character creation or Environment creation. These are experienced and talented artists with team management capabilities.

Art Director: The one who leads the artistic team and is responsible their management. They lay out the artistic vision for a game. This is a senior position that requires not only visualisation and artistic ability, but also strong leadership skills.

One needs a decent understanding of the specific process, techniques and different procedures involvedin the creation/formation of game art. While creativity/artistic ability is a key pre-imperative for a career  in Game Art creation, one also needs to be skilled in the digital tools  like Maya, Max, Photoshop, ZBrush, Substance Designer, and more, and have a fundamental comprehension of how game engines, for example, Unreal and Unity work.

Disney further pushes ‘Mulan’ to 21 August

Disney has further deferred the big screen release of live-action remake of Mulan for a third time now. Originally set to hit theaters in the U.S. on 27 March, the live-action remake of the animated classic, was supposed to release on 24 July because of the pandemic. Now, it’s further pushed to 21 August putting an end to Hollywood’s hopes for a successful summer movie season.

Starring Liu Yifei in the titular role, Mulan costs $200 million and is expected to strongly resonate in China but with the Chinese movie theaters being currently closed, and it’s uncertain about a reopening date. Given the importance of Mulan in China, it would be risky to release the movie and leave Chinese audiences behind.

“While the pandemic has changed our release plans for ‘Mulan’ and we will continue to be flexible as conditions require, it has not changed our belief in the power of this film and its message of hope and perseverance. Director Niki Caro and our cast and crew have created a beautiful, epic, and moving film that is everything the cinematic experience should be, and that’s where we believe it belongs – on the world stage and the big screen for audiences around the globe to enjoy together,” said Disney’s co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn and co-chairman Alan Bergman.

This comes after Pixar pushed Soul from June to November release, Raya and the Dragon, which was originally planned for the November slot has been pushed to 2021. The fourth John Wick movie, meanwhile, has been deferred to 2022, and the entire upcoming Marvel slate has been delayed too.

Warner Bros. also postponed the release of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Tenet will now release on 12 August.

Star Movies to premiere ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ for the first time on Indian television

The X-Men comic series has always remained a fan-favourite since its inception. The franchise became even more popular with its film adaptations X-Men, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, The Wolverine, Logan and the latest X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Star Movies is going to air the latest installment of the mutant extravaganza, X-Men: Dark Phoenix for the first time on Indian television on 28 June, Sunday at 12 pm and 9 pm.

Fans have long been drawn to the adventures of the mutants, their fight for good over evil, fantastic plot, subtle nuances and analogies of the X-Men universe.

In Dark Phoenix, the mutants are back with another exquisite adventure. The noted star cast includes Game of Thrones fame, Sophie Turner taking on the role of the complex, enigmatic and destructive – Jean Grey and her alter-ego, Phoenix. Grey works intimately with Professor X, but struggles to control her natural mutant abilities and the superpowers of Phoenix, who is wild, fierce and hard to tame, resulting in pure anarchy and mayhem for everyone in her orbit.

Speaking about her role, Turner commented, “The story of Dark Phoenix, takes off after Apocalypse when the X-Men are sent to space and Jean, therein gets hit by a solar wave which manifests this crazy, uncontrollable energy within her – The Dark Phoenix. Thus, begins her unraveling, and that of the X-Men as a family.  I think that’s what draws me in, playing these really strong female characters, even if they are set in supernatural and fantastical settings, there is a real human connection behind it.”

Legendary Marvel Comics artist, Joe Sinnott dies at 93

Longtime Marvel Comics artist Joe Sinnott, who inked for Jack Kirby and John Romita Sr., has passed away at the age of 93. Sinnott’s inking work helped establish and define many of Marvel’s biggest characters, including the Fantastic Four series, which he worked on from 1965 to 1981.

“It with great sorrow that we must announce the passing of Joltin’ Joe Sinnott on 25 June at 8:40am at the age of 93,” Sinnott’s family shared on his Facebook page. “He went peacefully with the knowledge that his family, friends, and fans adored him. He enjoyed life and was drawing up until the end. He always loved hearing from all of you and having your comments read to him. Each and every one of you were special to him.”

Sinott’s first art job led his boss to offer side work doing freelance comics work, which led Sinnott to meet Stan Lee at Atlas Comics in 1951.  He was working with Atlas, Charlton Comics and various other companies, before settling in with Marvel, where he forged a long partnership with Kirby.

He influenced various Marvel characters (Thor, Silver Surfer, The Avengers) until the 1980s, working sporadically thereafter until 1992. He would continue to ink the Amazing Spider-Man comic strip until 2019, at age 92. Filmmaker Shiv Panikker’s Graphic Novel ‘Gone Case’ releases

Despite being marred by the — boom and bust cycles, India’s comicbook or more appropriately ‘Chitrakatha’ scene has had a long and varied history and — it is on the rise once again!

Amid the pandemic, there is a fresh wave of graphic novels engulfing the country which, oddly enough, filmmakers are poised to ride. We recently covered the graphic novels written by the likes of TVF founder Arunabh Kumar and India’s noted screenwriter and lyricist Varun Grover.

Filmmaker Shiv Panikker is the latest entrant to adorn the landscape with his new graphic novel titled Gone Case.

Touted as Mumbai’s first graphic novel of the horror genre, Gone Case is a story of a Mumbai-based cop with a dark past who is tasked with escorting an escaped inmate back to the asylum. Along the way, he suspects that the inmate might be a serial killer and the asylum may be haunted.

Panniker is a producer, director and a screenwriter. Having graduated from the New York Film Academy and then moving to Mumbai to start off his career as an assistant director, he quickly started directing commercials and promos which eventually took him to Bangkok. While he was working there, he felt the deep urge to tell a story that he initially penned as a movie-script but later decided to go the graphic novel route.

Speaking about the experience that spurred him on to write Gone Case, he shares: “Personally speaking, I have been a victim of an online debit card theft. It happened when I was in Bangkok. I got a notification on my phone informing me that a large sum of money was withdrawn from my Indian debit card. I was petrified because that was my hard-earned savings that just disappeared in a heartbeat. After the bank’s investigation, I did get my money back. But that feeling of helplessness stuck with me.”

“When I pitched it as a movie and a web-series, I was asked to include a love story or an unnecessary romantic arc which would have made the plot stray from its baseline realism and spirit. I didn’t want to commercialise or tone down my story.”

Elaborating on what made him feel strongly about the plot, he notes: “I started researching debit card theft on YouTube and Google and I was stunned to find out that over 461,000 stolen cards with all their personal information, both debit & credit (worth $130 Million) are being sold on the dark web. What shocked me, even more, is the fact that only two per cent of those cards were Colombian. The rest 98 per cent were Indian. All of this information was being sold on a Dark Web. Why hasn’t it caught the interest of the mainstream media in a big way?”

Alluding to recent covert operation Fox Hunt 2 that busted a hidden online fraud network that was committing crimes outside the UAE, including cyber fraud, hacking banking fraud and identity theft, he points that it also involved high-profile instagram celebrities like Hushpuppi which proves how deep this dark web goes.

“When I pitched it to various platforms, I was asked to include a love story or an unnecessary romantic arc which would have made the plot stray from its baseline realism and spirit. I didn’t want to commercialise or tone down my story,” he explains.

Having been a fan of comicbooks since childhood, he finally decided that a graphic book format would be the best platform. Speaking about his love for comics, he shares: “I am a fan of Batman because he has no superpowers and yet he is a superhero. I love both DC and Marvel. In fact, at the age of 30, I continue to pore over comicbooks avidly. My room is full of action figures ranging from Batman to Superman to Spiderman and more”

Marvel soon to introduce Fantastic Four in MCU; Doctor Doom might be the next super-villain

Marvel Studios is soon going to introduce the Fantastic Four crew in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). After The Walt Disney Company took over 20th Century Fox and its assets, Fantastic Four and The X-Men franchise now comes under Marvel, and the entertainment conglomerate is now going to bring these franchises into the MCU.

As per a MCU Cosmic report, the studio will introduce the Fantastic Four into the universe just like it brought Black Panther into the fold. In fact, if rumours and reports are to be believed, Marvel is looking at introducing popular Marvel villain, Victor von Doom aka Doctor Doom, last seen in Fant4stic (2015), to be MCU’s next super-villain after Thanos.

Doctor Doom, last seen in Fant4stic

The Fantastic Four and the X-Men can now feature alongside the Avengers, as Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige revealed that Marvel intends to introduce these fan-favourite characters eventually.

After unveiling the studio’s Phase IV lineup at the San Diego Comic Con last year, Feige mentioned, “So this is Phase IV…Now there’s a lot of other stuff we didn’t get to talk about today. We didn’t even mention that we’re making Black Panther 2. We didn’t mention the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is coming. We didn’t have time to talk about Captain Marvel 2, by the way. I didn’t even have time to talk about the Fantastic Four. And there’s no time left to talk about mutants.”

According to MCU Cosmic, the studio intends to introduce Doctor Doom, by setting up the nation of Latveria and its prime minister, Lucia Von Bardas first. It is similar to how Wakanda was introduced in Captain America: Civil War, before being fully explored in Black Panther. “In the comics she’s [Lucia] actually the successor to Doctor Doom after he was deposed as the ruler of Latveria and even used the Doctor Doom name for a time,” the report read.

In Fant4stic (2015), Doctor Doom was played by Toby Kebbell, and it’s rumoured that John Krasinski is in talks to star in and direct the rebooted Fantastic Four.
