Zootopia directors to helm Disney’s upcoming original animated movie, ‘Encanto’

Zootopia directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush to helm Disney’s upcoming original animated movie titled Encanto. Walt Disney Animation Studios is developing a new film about a Brazilian family, who all have magical powers, however a young girl in the family has no powers.

According to The Disinsider, Encanto, means “charm” in English. With Lin-Manuel Miranda writing the music for the film, Clark Spencer (Ralph Breaks the Internet) and Yvett Merino Flores (Moana) will be producing the film. The screenplay is being co-written by Charise Castro Smith, who previously worked on The Haunting of Hill House, along with Bush.

In terms of upcoming movies, the only confirmed film coming from Disney Animation Studios is Raya and the Last Dragon, which was pushed from a late 2020 release date to early 2021. Beyond that, the studio has claimed November release dates in 2021, 2022 and 2023, but has yet to confirm what in-development projects will debut on those dates. Now, a new report offers insight into at least one of Disney’s upcoming animated films.

Encanto seems to be part of a larger push at Disney to diversify the characters who lead their movies and the types of stories that are told. A big push from viewers for representation in recent decades seems to have influenced the studio’s approach to storytelling.

Made in India game ‘Bingo Bash’ celebrates its 10th anniversary

GSN Games, a cross-platform entertainment, has today announced that Bingo Bash, has now entered its tenth year of live operations.

Commenting on the tenth year of anniversary Newzoo CEO, and co-founder of games markets insights firm Peter Warman said  “When it comes to mobile gaming, there is no doubt that India is one of the hottest countries on the planet – not only from a consumer and market-size standpoint, but also from a local industry perspective. Several games developed in India have grossed multiple millions in lifetime revenue, both in their home market as well as abroad. There’s no question that Bingo Bash is the #1 video game of Indian origin on mobile by revenue and, to the best of my knowledge, the #1 grossing video game from India overall. For those who follow the Indian mobile games market, the most profitable title might be a bit of a surprise. It’s not the much-acclaimed Teen Patti franchise that tops the charts, but Bingo Bash, published globally by GSN Games — and the margin by which it leads is actually very significant. On mobile storefronts alone, Bingo Bash has generated between four and five times more revenue in its lifetime than the Teen Patti games. And that doesn’t even begin to factor in the significant business that Bingo Bash has done on social platforms like Facebook over the years.”

Originally created by Bitrhymes (later renamed to Bash Gaming) in 2010 as a social game on Facebook, Bingo Bash’s success enabled the team to secure investment from San Francisco’s Tandem Capital to help them scale their workforce and bring the game to mobile devices, where its continued success led to the $165 million acquisition of Bash Gaming by GSN Games in 2014.

Players who want to take part in Bingo Bash’s birthday celebration can participate in a number of activities on the official Facebook page, including a cake bake-off, a short birthday video about the game, and more.

“It’s not uncommon for a major publisher to purchase the rights to an IP and transition its work to their existing studios, but GSN Games understood that Bingo Bash’s success was intrinsically linked to the people who built it. Bash Gaming’s team continues to function as the Bangalore operations of GSN Games, with 250+ people working full-time on Bingo Bash and other games in the GSN Games portfolio,” said GSN Games vice president of Bingo Bash Srivatsa Narasimhan.

GSN Games senior vice president and general manager Wilhelm Taht says, “Mobile games are the single fastest-growing segment of consumer entertainment today, outpacing music and movies combined.India has played an incredibly important role in this growth, thanks to both its players and creators. Bingo Bash’s success owes a great deal to its Indian origins, and to have that success validated by Newzoo is a tremendous way to kick off our celebrations as Bingo Bash enters its second decade.”

‘Frozen 3’ hasn’t been discussed yet

The Frozen franchise started in 2013 and quickly became another smash hit for Disney. Frozen resonated with audiences and made way to $1.2 billion worldwide and two Academy Awards. The sequel was inevitable and finally arrived last year after the fans waited for six years.

‘Frozen’

With both Frozen and Frozen 2 becoming pop culture icons, a Frozen 3 seems like it won’t be far behind. However, Disney hasn’t announced anything official is happening. Josh Gad, who voices lovable snowman Olaf, recently said he isn’t aware of any plans so far, but also didn’t write off the possibility entirely.

Frozen 2‘s directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee similarly said they had no immediate plans for a third film, but they also acknowledged it could happen in the future. Marc Smith, who served as the director of story for Frozen 2, spoke with Collider about the making of that film and the franchise’s potential future. When asked if there’s any interest in a Frozen 3, Smith simply said, “We have not had that discussion. I think Frozen 2 is still too close to everyone’s minds and ideas to, to think about what happens beyond, beyond that.”

Frozen 2 released back in November and is providing new content regularly, like the special six-part documentary series, which released on Disney+ last week, that explores the behind the scenes process that went into Frozen 2.

Borderlands 3: Bounty Of Blood DLC is out

Borderlands 3 recently got its third story DLC, titled Bounty of Blood. Gearbox creative director, Matt Cox, spoke to GameSpot about the new features coming along with this DLC.

The Bounty of Blood DLC has brought on four new mechanics to the game’s combat. “We wanted to take four gameplay objects and throw them into the combat mix. So while we still have that core loop going on, we have different avenues of different styles of combat and ways to negotiate all the craziness in Borderlands,” said Cox.

Cox also illustrated how these new mechanics will help players to change their combat tactics. “So there’s something called a traitor weed where if you shoot it, it releases these bugs that turn enemies to your side for eight to nine seconds,” Cox said. “And a core-sploder, if you melee it, it will shotgun out high-damage shrapnel. There’s also a breezer, which acts sort of like a jump-pad but it soars you into the air by a puff of air. And then there’s a telezapper, which is essentially a teleporter–it lets the player travel from point A to point B instantaneously.”

Borderlands 3 is available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Stadia. Bounty of Blood is out now on all four platforms.

“For the past three years ‘Paap-O-Meter’ has done very well, so we wanted to ramp up the production”: Ronojoy Chakraborty

Earlier this month, Indian kids broadcaster Sony YAY! announced a fresh content line-up for its would-be-next flagship show after Honey Bunny ka Jholmaal, Paap-O-Meter. According to the channel, the horror comedy has received great response from the younger audience and thus Sony YAY! decided to ramp up this animated property.

Sony YAY! business head Leena Lele Dutta told AnimationXpress, “We have recently added a significant bank of fresh episodes of Paap-O-Meter which has received a phenomenal response. We are also planning the release of the first Paap-O-Meter movie in the coming months.”

Paap-O-Meter had been active on Sony YAY!’s content slate but had limited bridge space in the last three years, unlike Honey Bunny Ka Jholmaal and other shows on the channel, as Sony YAY! Programming head Ronojoy Chakraborty mentioned in a recent interaction.

Said Chakraborty, “Paap-O-Meter always had an audience, a loyal one in fact, but it had very limited bridge space compared to the other programmes because of its subject which was very unique and one-of-a-kind in this genre in the Indian kids space. With it, we wanted to create a paradigm shift in the minds of kids that ghosts are always not horrific creatures, but friendly at times. For the past three years Paap-O-Meter has done so well that we wanted to ramp up production and provide more of it to our young viewers.”

Sony YAY! also carried out a research, through direct interaction with kids and found that the characters that Paap-O-Meter – Bhoot-boss and Thakela-Pakela are very popular amongst kids and thus the channel decided to have more stories of Paap-O-Meter and is seriously looking for expanding the IP.

Ronojoy Chakraborty

Speaking about the ideation of the show and characters, Chakraborty noted, “We always initiate from the point of an insight that we have gathered from focused groups. So, the insights coming from the kids from our IPs, we gather them and try to channelise in our content and that’s usually the beginning of any conceptualisation. For Paap-O-Meter, we wanted a funny, entertaining horror comedy show full of values, but without being preachy. So, the characters had to be friendly looking even if they’re ghosts and not unpleasant to kids. We didn’t want the three characters to look inhuman from any perspective so that was the initial starting point. Then we started designing those characters and consciously gave them human characteristics so that kids could relate to Thakela-Pakela’s fun banters or the Bhoot-boss strong principles. We also wanted to come up with other-worldly yet funny and relatable names for the character which would instantly connect with out target audience. So everything was designed in such a way that kids will experience a new world altogether. We kept all of these things in mind when we decided to bring new episodes. The show has a lot of underlined morality along with entertainment so we had to be calculated in that sense.”

Sony YAY! has maximum of its projects commissioned to animation studios in Kolkata. Ssoftoons was initially working on Paap-O-Meter, but since the kids channel owns the IPs, while ramping up the production of the show, they commissioned work to different studios as well.

Wackytoon Animation studio, also based out of Kolkata, work on Honey Bunny Ka Jholmaal and they too continued to provide fresh episodes and tele-movies even during COVID imposed lockdown. As animation as a medium doesn’t ask for live shooting, the content pipeline kept flowing. Hi-Tech is another animation studio that does service work for the channel.

For the Paap-O-Meter, new half an hour episodes will have two stories of the 11 minute format, and the channel is also producing a longer version of 45 minutes as a telemovie. The Sony YAY! team will extend its stories in order to engage kids in a better way with new adventures and fun.

COVID couldn’t disrupt Sony YAY!’s summer plans of new episodes or content and campaign line-up as they had planned much earlier. Added Chakraborty, “We generally keep a bank of episodes for our incoming months and we plan early. So for summer 2020, we had started planning around October 2019 or because animation takes time to be created, produced and aired so a nine to 10 month cycle is always followed for animation. But I appreciate the studios who have been our partners for a long time now and have been managing to produce episodes, despite the challenges, including the super cyclone Amphan.”

Sony YAY! is also experimenting with new pilots, ideas and plots gathered through research and observations, a couple of which are ready and will go into focus groups very soon and will probably see the light of the day soon. Details are still kept under wraps and the channel said that they’ll get back to us soon. So, stay tuned and stay safe!
