Report: 55 per cent can sustain remote working style for eight months to a year in VFX industry

Over the past few months, almost everyone has experienced a change in their way of work. Everyone has been practically, emotionally been dependent on technology to squeeze out productivity as everyone worked from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But this period has opened up a realm of possibilities in the world of remote working especially for the industry where work from home possibility was a rare example, the visual effects industry. The reasons behind it are many of which rendering heavy files, technological setup,  brainstorming for ongoing projects are crucial are the biggest challenge.

Surprisingly Escape Technology in partnership with HP, has rolled out the report “Going Remote” which shares that in VFX industry  55 per cent can sustain remote working style for eight months to a year after practicing work remotely.

Here are the few metrics that report has come up with:

  • Before Covid-19, 46 per cent of the VFX Industry revealed they did not have a work from home policy or technology in place.
  • A symptom of this is perhaps the fact that 34 per cent stated that one of the biggest barriers they felt to working remotely was the technology setup.
  • 55 per cent of our research respondents commented that they could now sustain this style of remote working for eight months to a year, showcasing how this has been embraced quickly from the top.
  • 30per cent of respondents found communication would be a barrier when working from home. Supporting this sentiment is the fact that 87per cent of VFX industry workers said that during this crisis their leadership team have heavily encouraged, supported, and facilitated remote working. While we have been forced into this situation due to extreme circumstances it has proven that remote working does work.
  • However, long-term due to the human connection that the office provides, 48 percent state that although working from home is now more desirable they would rather work from the office where possible.
  • Only 16 percent of the respondent  found productivity as a barrier while working from home.

If the technology setup isn’t strong enough, it is going to make that leap of remote working harder for businesses. In a people-focused industry, with studios across London, the UK and wider locations working on numerous productions, this is no small feat. With these issues setting the backdrop for the remote working debate before Covid-19, naturally to get businesses set up quickly for a move all on one day was going to be difficult.

Coffee and TV CE Derek Moore

Independent visual content studio Coffee and TV CEO Derek Moore comments on this, “We’ve always had a bigger footprint in the size of the company than our physical space in Soho, we have clients connecting from all over the world,  and the country. The biggest  change  was  when  everyone  had  to  work  from  home  all at the same time on the same day.”

Vine FX, VFX supervisor and owner Michael Illingworth

This was a similar experience for Cambridge-based visual effects studio, Vine FX, VFX supervisor and owner Michael Illingworth who added, “We have quite a few artists who have set up at home or  work  remotely,  in  Bulgaria,  France,  Greece,  London,  using PCoIP technology we were able to get them working on machines as if they were in our office.”

Data security while working from home

With data security and having a secure technology pipeline being the biggest barrier to working from home, this was an issue many studios had to address first – reviewing their ecosystems and determining what would work fast and securely to enable everyone to work from home effectively. Understanding that Escape Technology believes there are two key routes:

  • The first is the VPN which is a common route used by many during this crisis. This provides a  secure connection from a remote machine to your company  The downside here is that the size of files you are trying to load over your home internet connection can be limited.  Downloads can take some time to complete and from a security standpoint this method fails as data from your pipeline is being distributed.  Therefore your internet connection becomes an issue.
  • Second is not to touch data and move the smallest amount of information: the pixels of the screen, streamed to your home, but with a mouse and a  keyboard attached which means that no data actually leaves the office. The remote device is only decoding an encrypted stream of pixels and, therefore, you could do this on any cheap computer instead of investing in newer hardware. In VFX there are major concerns about working remotely due to high-security projects and NDAs.Due to the lack of experience in the industry for broader remote working, or barriers to letting employees have that access, there is an absence of education when it comes to this type of setup. The process of sharing pixels – and not data – means that a remote setup will mirror ‘at work’ screens, but will not allow users to download projects or files.

What is the future?

Sticking to the traditional term on working at the designated desk in office place can be a problem during the time of crisis. Evolving with the incorporation of technological innovation should be the key to be it communication or data security.

Territory Studio system engineer Alan Puah

As the industry is going through tough times Territory Studio system engineer Alan Puah from says, “It’s difficult to say. Businesses will come out of this with different experiences, and that will determine how they change their processes and policies. I’m hopeful and optimistic that things will change for the better so that businesses are not only able to better protect their own interests, but that of their employees.”

One of Us co-director Dominic Parker

London based One of Us co-director Dominic Parker adds, “We see that an exciting possibility has opened up. At the same time, we don’t want to lose the value of direct human interaction. Creative collaboration is the most exciting aspect of our job,  and we still believe that the crux of this is in a shared physical space.  At the same time, there are many tasks that do not require this. We are going to have to find the right balance. But how exciting that this option is opening up.”

South Indian films are the firsts to release directly on OTT services

With the continuation of nation-wide lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19, films are now heading towards direct-release-on-OTT-services as all the theaters and multiplexes are shut indefinitely.

South Indian films are the firsts to make way to OTT services directly. Awaited Telugu film Amrutharamam has released on ZEE5 today, and Tamil film Ponmagal Vandhal will release on Amazon Prime Video, as the films’ producers confirmed on Twitter.

Amrutharamam

Though that has concerned cinema and multiplex owners as the theatrical releases seem to be in threat. Ponmagal Vandhal producer, Suriya, faced immediate backlash, as Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association president R Panneerselvam announced that the association’s members would not release any film by Suriya, though the statement was withdrawn later in the day.

The anxiety for big screens is real for the producers, makers as well as the cinema owners. Also, the  OTT release window in India is much shorter than it is in the US as it doesn’t cut across the tier 2 and tier 3 cities that much.

After Amazon Prime Video launched in India, movies started releasing online within a month of their big screen releases. Jio too announced last year that it would stream movies to JioFiber customers ‘the same day’ a movie releases, to the disappointment of multiplex chain and cinema owners.

‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’ new update will introduce Gunsmith Customs

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is getting a new update, which will introduce Gunsmith Customs. It will allow players to mix and match various attachments from blueprints of the same weapon to create hybrid blueprints that come with unique looks and capabilities. Additional details about Gunsmith Customs will be revealed after the update goes live.

This will also bring the MK9 Bruen LMG and Hybrid Blueprints to the forefront. It also sees ‘Shoot the Ship’, a playlist consisting of Shoothouse and Shipment only, going live with a double XP weekend taking place later in the week. If you own Modern Warfare, then you’ll have two different downloads – one for the update, the other for the Data Pack DLC.

During the Data Pack DLC download, it’s still possible to play Warzone so that should help pass the time. Warzone-only players won’t need the Data Pack DLC – just the update. As for Hybrid Blueprints, they allow for even more customisation than before as players can use combine attachments from different Blueprints for a weapon.

On top of all that, another double XP weekend is on the way. Between 1 May and 4May at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 8pm BST, players will get a chance to earn double XP, double weapon XP, and double battle pass tier progression in all Modern Warfare playlists, including Warzone.

Installing the Modern Warfare update is a two-stage process. First you’ll download part 1 of the update as usual, and then you’ll be prompted to download the Data Pack DLC when you try to open Multiplayer, Special Ops, or Campaign modes.

ZEUX Innovation partners with Discovery India to deliver country’s first aggregated real-life entertainment app

ZEUX Innovation has partnered with Discovery India to design the Discovery+ app. The app was launched on 18 March 2020 and continues to garner good reviews across major app stores for its content and user experience.

Commenting on the collaboration Discovery India business head Issac John said, “As a product, our team was very conscious of solving barriers for user adoption in a cluttered OTT market like India. The various research and design workshops that ZEUX led for us, placed user motivations at the heart for solving these barriers. The iterative work, completed over several months, has paid rich dividends for us as expressed by the umpteen user reviews that have highlighted the rich yet simple to navigate UI & UX of Discovery Plus”.

Some thoughts behind the UX design:

One-stop-shop As a first step, ZEUX conducted foundational research with target users across India to ascertain Discovery’s app consolidated strategy. Other insights gathered regarding content preferences, subscription models, pricing, etc. also helped establish a clear app strategy and laid down a solid foundation for the design effort.
Discoverability ZEUX completely re-imagined the content categorisation approach for Discovery+ and created several innovative content buckets and micro-genres (such as: time of day, emotion, content length, life stage, brag value, etc.). This not only ensured that the overall information architecture of the app matches the target users’ mental models but also enhanced content findability.
Stickiness The unique ”Shorts” feature was an innovation crafted specifically to enhance engagement for the new-age generation. Never seen before on any OTT platform, Shorts brought snackable non-fiction content & infinite scrolling to offer a unique engagement strategy for Discovery+
Shareability ZEUX built a hyper-simple sharing experience by seamlessly integrating user’s most preferred sharing channel (WhatsApp) into the app interface. This innovation has proven to be a key factor in enhancing content share-ability resulting in higher organic user acquisitions for Discovery+
Intelligence Circular content toggles at the top of key pages were created by ZEUX to ensure that the home & landing pages for core content categories showcase Discovery’s vast content breadth and depth. Click-data from the toggles also fortified the app’s intelligence gathering mechanism and fuelled its content personalisation & recommendation engines.

Commenting on the same ZEUX Innovation co-founder Saurabh Gupta, said, “We are proud to be the UX design partner for Discovery+. We leveraged the science of human performance & persuasion design to craft an OTT experience that is a perfect balance between delivering specific business outcomes, addressing diverse user needs and effectively managing technology considerations”.

Saurabh Gupta and Hemal Gathani

Adding to the perspective another co-founder Hemal Gathani stated, “Client support was the key factor in transforming our thoughts into reality. The fact that the Discovery team supported our thought process and empowered us to think laterally, led to a seamless delivery from our end”.

Toonz Animation creates animated shorts on covid-19 prevention with students

The coronavirus pandemic is only seen growing day by day and following personal hygiene, maintaining social distance, using face masks and avoiding stepping out of the houses are few ways to keep the deadly virus away from you. Toonz Media Group recently created an animated short to make everyone aware about the importance of wearing face masks during this pandemic. The idea to create a short started with the Kerala government reaching out to creative companies for creating animated covid prevention videos.

The process was tedious as the employees are working from home. “It was indeed a challenge to manage the process during lockdown, but luckily Toonz arranged work from home and helped with shifting everybody’s work stations before lockdown started,” mentioned Toonz Media Group CEO P. Jayakumar.

The message was very important and needed to reach out to maximum people in a short time span. The entire movie from script to screen happened in 10 days. The creative team at Toonz used Adobe Flash CC, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects for their work. Communication was integral as the entire team was aware that spreading the message had to be time bound and systematic.

The story concept and idea was conceived by an ex Toonz employee, illustrator, cartoon columnist and scriptwriter in Kerala, Mahesh Vettiyar. The visualisation for the short was done by the Toonz development team. The entire animated short was animated by the students at Toonz Academy, under the supervision and guidance of Toonz Animation staff. “That’s the best part of the video; it was animated by our own students,” added Jayakumar. The voice for the video was provided by Bilas Nair.

The video which is available to watch on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Toonz’s official page, has got good appreciation on social media, because of its quirky approach. The team at Toonz is currently working on a second video, focusing on the importance of washing hands, which will soon be out there for us all to watch.

Talking about the rise of the animation industry as the live-action is at a stand still, Jayakumar said, “Both fields have their importance in entertaining the audience. However we live in difficult situations now where social distancing has shut down film shoots and much more. In such situations, animation as a medium enables quick – turnaround programming when planned properly.”

The animated short is surely a quirky take on the current situation, spreading awareness amongst young and adults alike with 2D animation technique. The Kerala Government has also been using the video to spread the message to maximum people through various platforms.
