Coronavirus outbreak: Unity pulls out of GDC 2020

Unity CEO John Riccitiello announced that the company is pulling out of this year’s Game Developers Conference, which will take place in San Francisco from 16 March to 20 March.

As the official post says “Unfortunately, this year, after much thought and deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to pull out of GDC 2020. While we did not make this decision lightly, the current conditions with COVID-19 (also known as Novel Coronavirus) present too much risk. We take our employees’ wellbeing very seriously. We do not want any Unity employee, partner, community member or developer to compromise their health and safety unnecessarily.”

Unity is an important part of every GDC. Its game-making tool is one of the most popular in the world for developers big and small across all platforms. As more companies withdraw from these shows, it could pressure other developers and publishers to keep their employees away from these conventions.

They have also revealed that they might not be physically present at the GDC unlike every year but will be present online. “We’re advising all employees to refrain from travelling to GDC. We will no longer have a physical presence with a booth, but will instead showcase the great GDC content we’ve been working towards online. Expect more details in the coming weeks,” said the post.

Other notable companies that have abandoned plans to attend the show include Sony, Microsoft, Facebook, and Electronic Arts. unity has been positive by saying ” We look forward to showing our support at next year’s event. “

Best Online Casino Graphics

Over the last ten years, online slot games have become increasingly powerful. While these games were once relatively basic, they are now massive productions that rival the graphical intensity and play-ability of console games. In this article, we will look at what happened in the online slot realm that allowed games to become graphically excellent.

When visiting an online casino, it is visibly clear that there was a point where online casino games went to a new level in terms of quality. For example, NetBet casino online allows players to choose from classic slots from 15 years ago to modern titles. It is evident newer online slots are more graphically intense and much more dynamic.

Below are some of the key drivers of the shift in quality:

Technology Improved

Perhaps the most obvious reason why online slots are so amazing now compared to before is technology. Through each generation, game developers have simply been working with what they had. If older online slot games look limited in their animation quality, its because the technology was restrictive.

More recently, technology has allowed developers to create richer slot experiences built on 3D rendered graphics, high-definition resolution, and excellent audio quality. It is also worth pointing out that the increased popularity of online slots has allowed developers to spend more money creating games. These days, the best online slots have a budget that matches full console games and the results often speak for themselves.

Smartphones have transformed the online casino industry. More people can now access games in the palm of their hand and play online slots anywhere. The power of smartphones means there is no loss in quality, allowing for the exact same experience you would get on a PC.

Licensing Characters

Over the years, slot developers have understood a good way to attract players is to create a slot based on a popular movie, TV show, band, or character. Pop culture and online slots are a perfect match. Because online slots are very close to video games in terms of playability, they can do justice to pop culture hits.

This has been encapsulated by the increasing popularity of online slots based on comic book movies and characters. In fact, most slot game catalogs on online casinos are dominated by these slots, based on characters from Marvel (Iron-man, Thor, The Avengers) and DC (Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman).

Developers officially license IP and are able to put massive resources into creating a graphically intensive online slot. This is added to by increasingly rich storylines, wonderful animations, and strong gameplay elements. Online slots based on licensed IP can now often combine the best aspects of the slot experience, cinematic visuals, and console-like gameplay.

The Future

What’s perhaps most interesting about the ongoing development of slot games is that this new era of graphics seems to be just the beginning. As ever, new innovations in technology are promising to yield many changes. For example, virtual reality is slowly starting to impact the online casino realm and could have major influences on how online slots look in the future.

New Indian battle royale multiplayer game, ‘Auto Raja’, includes picturesque Indian streets

An auto-rickshaw is a motorised version of the hand-pulled rickshaw or cycle rickshaw and in India, one might come across it in numbers in almost every nook and corner. In Mumbai, a larger portion of the mass is literally dependent on it for the daily commute. And often passengers who travel by rickshaw, come across brawls among the rickshaw pullers.

The competition of rickshaw drivers to get passengers first are a common sight every day. Probably this thought triggered Hyderabad based gaming studio, BornMonkie, established in 2018, to launch their game Auto Raja on the MPL platform next month.

AutoRaja is Indian .io style multiplayer battle royale game according to the studio with a story mode where one gets to play as a third-person perspective, racing around AutoNagar in the Rickshaw by picking up passengers and blasting away the competition.

In conversation with AnimationXpress, BornMonkie VP J Pavan Kumar Reddy who works as a 3D artist and as a game designer says, “We wanted to create games with an Indian background. During the college days when I used to travel in autos, as it was more convenient and we have observed that auto drivers’ fight for their passengers and how they are counting their fellow auto drivers as competition. Then it triggered us to create a game around auto rickshaw, where there will be a mix blend of passengers and the beauty of the Indian streets. That was the main concept behind Auto Raja.

He believes that autos are the best mode of transportation, and so, one has to be on toes to survive in this competition — the more passengers a player will earn, more score he/she will make, ultimately resulting in victory in the game! The crux of the game is when a player gets to play as an auto-driver driving a ‘Turreted Tuk-Tuk’, with more auto-rickshaws and a rebel union formed through the storyline of the game. The last person standing with the highest number of score wins.

The game designing process is mesmerizingly unique as they have travelled from places to click real-life pictures as a reference to create the realistic-looking computer-generated environment, objects for the game. From Char Minar, to food carts, to ice cream carts, it has it all! Added he, “We went to shoot the locations of the old city, Hyderabad and collected references of local buildings, props to make the environment look closer to Indian style. Gathering all the references and info we moved to the next step which is modelling them all.”

The steps that they  kept in mind while designing the game are as follows:

  • Laying out the large-scale features of the map, for players and enemies to move around in.
  • Determining environmental conditions and ‘ground rules’ such as scoring systems, allowable weapons or gameplay types, time limits, and starting resources.
  • Specifying certain regions where certain gameplay activities or behaviours occur.
  • Specifying non-static parts of a level, such as and buttons with associated mechanisms, Specifying locations of various entities, such as player units, enemies, monster spawn points, resource nodes, weapons, save points, and so on;
  • Specifying the start and exit locations for one or more players;
  • Adding aesthetic details such as level-specific graphic textures, sounds, animation, lighting and music;
  • Introducing scripted event locations, where certain actions by the player can trigger specified changes;
  • Placing the pathfinding nodes.

The game is mainly targeted to mobile platforms. “Most of the Indian multiplayer gamers are mobile gamers. By 2020, the count is expected to reach 326 million. If we can target even one per cent of the gamers, the number would be 3.26 million players,” he noted. They have spent around Rs 6 lakhs to complete the game and they have initiated the development process from April 2019.

In addition to that, they are also planning to launch the game on Steam platform and for that, they are shifting from unity engine to unreal engine for better design support. As JP mentioned, “In multiplayer  combat game, the quality of  the content should be great  if we are planning to shift in PC, Unity can’t deliver that quality, thus we are shifting to Unreal.”

The developers researched on the internet about various styles of Autos available all over the world. Then they have finalised four Popular Autos which includes – Classic Indian Auto, Cartoon Auto, Coco Taxi, Autopunk 2077. Apart from that, there are three types of weapons available and that includes Fire Goli, Boomer Gun, 100 Wala Shots.

The studio recently did a soft launch of their game and soon they will be launching on MPL platform. Stay tuned, as we have received a secret apk file of the game to try out ourselves will keep you posted with the review!

“Hoichoi to dig deep into sub-genres and churn out more original content in 2020” : Vishnu Mohta

The Indian OTT industry is showing no signs of stopping! With almost 40 video streaming platforms, content is flowing like never before.

Homegrown video streaming services have upped their game to provide myriad original content, especially in the regional space. Hoichoi, the largest OTT platform from Bengal focusing exclusively on Bengali language content worldwide, is no exception.

Quite recently, the SVOD service owned by SVF (Shree Venkatesh Films) Entertainment has announced to launch 25 original series and six original movies in FY (fiscal year) 21, beginning from 1 April. Besides upgrading its original content slate, Hoichoi aims to acquire a good chunk of popular Bengali feature films on the platform, before their television premiere.

Speaking to AnimationXpress Hoichoi co-founder and SVF executive director Vishnu Mohta said, “I think one of the biggest advantages that Hoichoi has as an OTT player in the market is that it has a varied audience-base. In 2020, our main focus is to dig deep into sub-genres and churn out more such content which will ultimately, resonate to our audience. We are planning to produce another 25 original series in 2020. We are already streaming our 50th original show – season five of Byomkesh and looking to introduce an interesting mix of genres like Psychological Thriller-Horror, Treasure-Hunt Adventures, Modern Literary Adaptations, Biopics, Period Drama based on real events and so on.”

Hoichoi has produced varied content across genres to gain wider audience attention and keep doing so. There has been a significant rise in their subscriber numbers in 2019, with Charitraheen 2, Hello 2 and Paap (Durga Puja special show) gaining most traffic. Shows like Taranath Tantrik (literary adaptation), Byomkesh (detective show), Hello (drama) and Japani Doll (satirical comedy) also turned out to be quite successful for them.

Commenting on the current trends in the Bengali content industry, Mohta shared, “The audience now demands fresher and relatable content. The hunger for newer content, faces and talent has grown since the inception of the digital boom. Thus, speaking on behalf of the industry, we are always on the lookout for the massive creation of content, releasing two originals every month. Hence, we need ample support from content creators, directors and filmmakers to be able to achieve that. Even when we make an original in Bangladesh, we ensure the production, the makers, the talent – everyone is from that country itself so people there who are watching can relate and they can bring out their own culture in their best way [four out of six original movies, will be produced out of Bangladesh]. Another notable change is the process of film distribution. The sole priority has now shifted from movie theatres to television premieres and now, digital deals are becoming equally important.”

 The SVOD platform caters to 250 million Bengali diaspora globally including Bangladesh and Agartala apart from the ones residing in India. Besides Kolkata, its primary subscriber base, Hoichoi’s considerable chunk of subscribers also come cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Assam, Delhi and others. On the international front, the US and the UK are its key markets.

Vishnu Mohta

Such an amazing graph by creating and distributing original Bengali content has not stopped Hoichoi from exploring non-Bengali speaking markets, by introducing dubbed versions of their shows and films, as Bengal has an enviable library of content. Added Mohta, “The response for the dubbed versions from the audience has been tremendously positive on Hoichoi as well as on our partner platforms, thus we are focusing a lot on dubbed content, so much so that, we are streaming both Bengali and Hindi versions on the same day of release. Hindi is the first language we dealt with, however, we are also looking to dub a few of our shows in certain languages from the South. English subtitles are given to all content that’s showcased on the service.”

According to a recent CII-BCG report, India’s SVOD market is estimated to reach $1.5 billion by 2023 from a projected $0.5 billion in 2019, driven by diverse content and convenience of on-the-go entertainment. Presently, Hoichoi boasts of 2000+ hours of content, more than 140 million total page views and more than 22 million total streams.
