Dream11 strengthens its partnership with European Cricket Network

Dream11, India’s fantasy sports platform, has partnered with the European Cricket Network (ECN) to become the ‘Official Fantasy Game’ for the European Cricket Series (ECS) and European Cricket League (ECL) tournaments. Apart from being the ‘Official Fantasy Game’, Dream11 will also be the ‘Title Sponsor’ for all the ECS matches. This partnership further strengthens Dream11’s association with the successful inaugural edition of the European Cricket League (ECL) which was played at the prestigious La Manga Club in Spain last year.

ECN is on a mission to build and promote cricket in Europe, just like it is in England. Through this long-term partnership, Dream11 is supporting the development of cricket in Europe and also promoting European Cricket in India. The Dream11 European Cricket Series (ECS), which is slated to kick off from 2 March 2020, is a T10 tournament that will be hosted in 20 cities within 14 countries across Europe. Each city will witness a total of 20 matches bringing the total to 400 matches.

On the other hand, the European Cricket League (ECL) will see the domestic T20 winners from England, Scotland, Netherlands and 12 other European countries compete to be crowned the Champions of Europe! The ECL will see 38 T10 matches beginning 31 May 2020.

Speaking about the partnership, ECL founder Daniel Weston said, “The concept for the Dream11 European Cricket Series emerged after the success of the first edition of the European Cricket League last summer. The European Cricket League remains as the ‘Champions League of European Cricket’ and the new Dream11 European Cricket Series will ignite domestic European Cricket. I greatly appreciate the efforts and innovative thinking from Dream11 to make the partnership a reality. They understand our vision to develop domestic cricket in Europe as fast as possible so that we can reach our long term goal of making cricket the number one summer team sport in Europe. Talking about European Cricket, Dream11 spokesperson said, Cricket in Europe is currently played in small pockets with a limited set of audience. After the inaugural edition of ECL, we saw great uptake in the format, especially within Dream11 users and realized that European Cricket has a great potential to grow and eventually compete at the international level. We are happy to deepen our partnership with ECN and work towards building European cricket.”

Fans across the Indian subcontinent can catch all the LIVE action from ECS and ECL beginning 2nd March and 31st May exclusively on FanCode.

Valve to treat TI as Olympics, bids commence for cities to host the event

Dota 2 esports tournament The International (TI) has always attracted a lot of viewers every year and thus the tournament always has the highest prize pool in any esports event.

Valve Software has decided to start treating The International like the Olympics, soliciting bids from ‘host cities’ for the annual Dota 2 championships. The announcement is accompanied by a detailed request for proposal (RFP) document. Responses are due by 31 March.

“First held in Cologne, Germany in August 2011, The International has become one of the world’s largest sporting events and set numerous records for the largest prize pool in all of esports with its community-driven purse ($34.3 million total prize pool in 2019). Global viewership, international draw, and attendance rival that of the NFL Superbowl, U.S. Open Golf Championship, and the Eurovision Song Contest,” Valve said in an official post.

The clear intention is to secure the best possible venue — and the best possible financial outcome — for Valve to host its premier esports event.

In order for a city to be eligible to host a TI, they must be able to provide the facilities that Valve needs to run the event. Among them could be fibre connection from a local internet service provider, room for between 15,000 and 18,000 people for 10 days, enough hotel rooms for 30,000 people, high priority safety and more.

To create more clarity surrounding the RFP, Valve will be taking questions in written form before 15 March. During this time, countries will be able to figure out what they’re lacking as a venue as well as gain some much-needed answers.

According to Valve, cities that end up hosting TI will benefit economically. Previous TI host city, Vancouver, saw a US$7.8 million revenue increase that year due to a bump in hotel bookings as well as heightened activity at tourist attractions, restaurants and more.

WildBrain CPLG, one of the world’s leading entertainment, sport and brand licensing agencies, has inked a deal on behalf of Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), a leading entertainment company focused on the production of premium film and television content across platforms, with contemporary fashion brand LC23 and popular sportswear company Diadora for a footwear collaboration inspired by MGM’s iconic Pink Panther

Arranged by WildBrain CPLG Italy, the collaboration sees the launch of two limited edition trainer designs inspired by the elegance and surreal humour of the popular character.

Resulting from a Spring/Summer 2020 partnership between LC23 and Diodora, the trainers offer a fresh take on two of Diadora’s most popular styles – the Diadora ‘Rebound Ace’ and ‘Whizz Run’ – and feature bright embroidery style patch appliqués of both Pink Panther and Inspector Clouseau on a full grain leather/suede material mix.

WildBrain CPLG Southern Europe managing director Maria Gurrieri said, “The long-standing collaboration between LC23 and Diadora is recognised for producing bold, high-quality and playful products which we knew would make them the ideal partners to expand Pink Panther’s fashion offering. MGM’s iconic character, Pink Panther, started life in the front and end credits of the legendary detective series of the same name more than 50 years ago. Its popularity spawned TV series, specials, comics and merchandise and remains an icon of the era. Pink Panther continues to be discovered by new generations and remains one of MGM’s most well-known franchises.

The Diadora ‘Rebound Ace Pink Panther’ and the ‘Whizz Run Pink Panther’ trainers are now available at leading shoe retailers worldwide, and at Diadora’s official website.

Bob Iger steps down as Disney CEO

Bob Iger stepped down as CEO of Walt Disney Company. He will remain chairman through to the end of 2021. “With the successful launch of Disney’s direct-to-consumer businesses and the integration of Twenty-First Century Fox well underway, I believe this is the optimal time to transition to a new CEO,” Iger wrote in a statement.

Bob Chapek and Bob Iger

Iger has served as CEO since 2005 and oversaw Disney’s aquisitions of Star Wars, Marvel, and 21st Century Fox, as well as the launch of the Disney+ streaming service.

Disney parks, experiences and products chairman Bob Chapek is taking over, effective immediately. “I am incredibly honored and humbled to assume the role of CEO of what I truly believe is the greatest company in the world,” Chapek said in a statement. “Bob Iger has built Disney into the most admired and successful media and entertainment company, and I have been lucky to enjoy a front-row seat as a member of his leadership team.”

The former CEO said that he has the utmost confidence in Chapek and will be working closely with him over the next 22 months as he assumes this new role. Iger definitely has left his mark over the years and left Disney better than it was before him. Looks like, it’s the end of an era at Disney.

Disney promotes Hulu CMO Kelly Campbell as the president to run the streaming service

Disney has upped Hulu chief marketing officer Kelly Campbell to the position of the president to run the streaming service.

Campbell, who’s a former Google veteran, will lead Hulu’s on demand and live streaming businesses as the company is going to further integrate into parent Disney’s direct-to-consumer group.

Kelly Campbell

“This is a time of tremendous growth and transformation for Hulu, and I am incredibly energised by the opportunity ahead as we enter into this next chapter. The Hulu team is among the brightest, most technologically and creatively audacious in the industry, and I know we are going to do great things as part of the pioneering and equally bold team Kevin has built at DTCI,” said Campbell.

Her promotion announcement comes after Hulu CEO Randy Freer stepped down in January after a little more than two years in the post.  In her new role, Campbell will work with Disney’s film and TV studios on original programming for Hulu. She will report to Disney direct-to-consumer and international chairman Kevin Mayer.

Commented Mayer in a statement, “Campbell is an immensely talented leader who has been a driving force in defining Hulu’s brand vision and strategy. She has built a tremendous multi-talented team and developed strategic campaigns that helped double Hulu’s subscriber base. Our senior leadership team is excited to welcome her on board and can’t wait to work together to further grow Hulu’s footprint in the US and beyond.”

Prior to joining Hulu in 2017, Campbell looked after growth marketing for the search giant streamer’s cloud division. For the last three years, the marketing veteran supervised subscriber growth, brand, content and business-to-business marketing, research and viewer experience for the streamer and was key to its substantial growth. In early February, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Hulu has 30.7 million U.S. subscribers.

Disney acquired full operational control of Hulu in spring 2019, though its focus was on the launch of Disney+ in November 2019. The oversight of Hulu was taken under Disney TV Studios chairman Dana Walden. Now, Hulu is being integrated more deeply within the Disney direct-to-consumer group, which also houses Disney Streaming Services and oversees the operations of ESPN+.

With its established subscriber base in the U.S., Hulu is key to Disney’s three-pronged streaming strategy. The streamer will serve as the main home for adult programming from Disney brands and will soon launch the FX on Hulu banner where it streaming library content and originals from the cable network.
