Marvel to introduce its first transgender character

Kevin Feige

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has revealed that The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is all set to introduce the first transgender character.

After being frequently criticised for not having LGBTQ characters in the MCU, Feige was asked about the possibility of introducing trans character during a Q&A at the New York Film Academy, Fiege said, “Yes, absolutely yes. They will debut in a forthcoming film that is currently in production. So yeah, very soon, in a movie we’re shooting right now.”

While Fiege did not unveil further, fans are guessing the film to be Eternals that’s currently at the shooting stage. It was initially reported that the film will also introduce the franchise’s first gay character, as well as its first deaf superhero.

The Eternals marks the beginning of the fourth phase of the MCU following the conclusion of the Avengers Infinity saga, and will star Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kit Harington and Kumail Nanjiani.

“We want the movies to reflect the audience and we want every member of our global audience to see themselves reflected on the screen,” Feige added.

Last year, he also revealed that there was already an LGBTQ superhero in the MCU, with Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie who was first introduced in Thor: Ragnarok. She will return in Thor: Love and Thunder slated for 2021 release where her character’s first order of business will be “to find her queen” after becoming King of New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame.

In July, Geeks WorldWide reported Marvel was searching for a trans woman for a project scheduled to shoot in 2020. Speculations were that the character could possibly be Sera, an angel-like being from the Thor comics who transitioned to a female identity.

Assessing the monsters from Witcher season one

Rocking at top on the most watched charts on Netflix, Witcher has emerged to be one of the most captivating series’ in the OTT space. While some have marked it in their watchlists, many of us have already binged on it and watched it again in a bid to get a better grasp over the details of the story. Piquing around a million curiosities, the monsters in the famed series have become a subject of interest and wonder. We pored over the novels and the season to help you get a clear picture of their monstrosity levels.

Sylvan

Sylvan

Geralt is tasked with killing a devil that is pilfering off crops in the farmlands. All of a sudden a humanoid monster with goat-like features and horns on the head attacks him. The monster is none other than Sylvan, Torque the Sylvan who is in alliance with Filavandrel, King of Elvers, after the Elves were forced out of DOl Blathanna and into hiding. He steals food and supplies to help them survive. CG-wise, it seems to be a combination of prosthetics and a meagre amount of CG to enhance the look.

Striga

Striga

The Striga is a woman who is doomed as a monster due a punishment casted upon King Foltest of Timera’s incestuous relationship with his late sister, Adda. Ostrit the knight had also fallen in love with Adda and cursed Foltest for what he did however, the curse is passed on the daughter. Upon the pregnant mother’s death, the child emerges as a Striga. Striga is a formidable monster for Geralt as we see him unable to grapple with her even with all his superhuman chops. Striga seems to be an entirely CG characters in all her horrors and complexity.

Duny

Duny, Urcheon of Erlenwald (The Cursed Knight)

Another result of a curse. Duny, the Urcheon of Erlenwald, was a knight who wished to marry Pavetta, the daughter of Queen Calanthe of Cintra. His head resembles a hedgehog and he was doomed to be killed at the hands of Queen, but invoked the Law of Surprise. Duny saved Pavetta’s father in the past and his payment was this law that states the savior would be rewarded something unexpected in the future. Again, a CG urchin from the neck up, the anthropomorphic hedgehog with its pointy head looks like a fine piece complex computer generated imagery.

Doppler

Doppler

The Doppler is a doppelgänger who can take the forms and memories of its victims. This particular Doppler took the form of Mousesack to lure Ciri out of the safety of Brokilon.. Dopplers are shape-shifting doppelgangers who can take forms of others including mannerisms and memories. Although the degree to which they can impersonate varies from Doppler to Doppler. Doppler in its original form is a CGI humanoid withered appearance that looks grotesque enough to cause revulsions.

Djinn

Djinns

Sometime  One of the most ferocious, Djinns are similar to bottled genies that typically grant wishes to those who release them. We don’t know yet as to what wish had Geralt made but it’s interesting to find that that wish was related to Yennefer. Smoke and light effects around the Djinn represent Jinn’s presence.

Hirikka

Hirikka

In the Witcher universe, The Hirikka, is said to be a rarity. Geralt was aware of this creature and told his fellow travellers to put down their weapons as it just looked hungry but before anyone could think of heeding Witcher’s words, Eyck took to the sword and hacked the creature to death. Complex eye-work on the CGI front, Hirrika seems to be a mix of practical and computer generated imagery.

Industry speaks: Changing landscape of Indian mobile gaming sector through the past decade

Mobile games have gained a lot of popularity in the last decade. Thanks to the India’s digital revolution. Today online gaming in India is a Rs 62 billion robust market with an estimated 300 million gamers in 2019 as per the KPMG report India’s Digital Future.

The factors like level of entertainment, fun, and the fact that players have the convenience of playing it any time and anywhere have led the popularity of the mobile gaming space to rise in the last decade.

There are roundabout a thousand games on the mobile gaming platforms currently. With the rapid increase in inventions that industry is witnessing, it is obvious that in the future, more complex and engaging games will be follow. The increasing popularity of the mobile gaming space has given a fillip to investors and brands to venture into the mobile gaming in order to increase their revenue. Since mobiles almost dominate the market, one can expect that all new games developed will be mobile-friendly for them to be relevant.

We had the opportunity to speak with folks from the gaming industry who have witnessed and sussed out the ebbs and flows in the gaming sector closely. This is what the Industry thinks:

Yoozoo Games India CEO Anuj Tandon expresses, “ This decade has been transformative for the mobile gaming industry – started with app store premium games which revolutionised game development. With Play store on Android and freemium model consolidating in the middle of the decade – the industry moved towards maturity and needed innovation. To summarise this decade has been the best ever for any mobile game developer/publisher.”

Photon Tadpole Studios founder and CEO Hrishi Oberoi says- “In the last decade mobile gaming has grown from its caveman roots to the equivalent of a powerful space faring civilization. To think that 10 years ago Angry Birds was just getting launched, thus propelling the smartphone gaming revolution into the mainstream… Mobile Gaming has evolved considerably since those days, especially because of the various business models that have been driving it. From the early days of Premium games like Angry Birds ruling the space, to the shift to free games with ad networks evolving to the ever present freemium models creating the successes of Clash of Clans and Candy Crush to the new battle-royale flavour of the day with PUBG and Free Fire currently dominating the world. Along the way, we saw the rise of hyper casual games, Social casino dominance and games that make you hard cash with real money gaming also create waves. Who knows what the next decade will bring us?”

Street Lamp Games CEO and founder Deepak Gurijala notes “Exactly 10 years back, it was so tough to find a publisher for any game. Today, publishers are behind many gaming studios for their games. It’s a brilliant decade for indie games and indie studios in mobile gaming space. Technology advancement has given us the best quality of games and super-smooth performance. Standards of premium games have risen to its best and new ways of monetisation were created through  free to play games, which was barely existed 10 years ago. Hyper-casual and super-casual revolution had changed the phase of mobile gaming market past couple of years. Cheaper mobile data has helped gamers to download more games and it also created more scope for developers to create innovative games without any restriction on the space of the game. There is a steep rise in both gamers, streamers and game developers in the market, which is a great sign for the this decade.”

Xigma games founder, designer and developer Himanshu Manwani shares, “We saw the rise of mobile gaming industry in this decade. Mobile gaming started to gain popularity with the introduction of smartphones. Digital distribution paved the path and made it possible for anyone to be able to release their own game.

Angry birds, Fruit Ninja, Temple run, were some of the early success on these smartphones. Since then the mobile gaming space has changed and grown immensely. With the increase in popularity of in-app purchases and freemium model, the mobile gaming industry has become the leading platform when it comes to revenue. As new smartphones have become more affordable with better capabilities to render high graphics with cheap data rates now available, anyone around the country can play along or compete with other players online in multiplayer games which have been huge driving force in the growth of mobile gaming market. Social features are on the rise and multiplayer gives the option to players to play along with their friends. Currently, games like PUBG, Fornite, Call of Duty Mobile are hugely popular because of these social features and capability to play with friends.

The mobile gaming market will continue to grow and social features and multiplayer options will play pivotal role to drive growth of the mobile market.”

Holy Cow Production  director of game development Goutham Dindukurthi believes that ‘the mobile gaming spaces has changed leaps and bounds in past decade! From Angry Birds to Candy Crush and games such as Monument Valley and Alto’s Adventure we have seen incredible experiences for mobile gamers.’ We have also seen a great change in the mobile hardware with the newer devices being so powerful to run high quality games with multiplayer support as well.”

Ogre Head Studio co-founder and director, Zainuddin Fahad who is not from mobile gaming sector but  being a gaming professional he has observed mobile gaming sector closely believes, “The mobile gaming space has grown significantly. There are many companies that have sprung up and doing great in mobile gaming space and the quality have also improved. I hope in 2020s there are more hardcore games of various genres including RPGs and not just limited casual or hyper casual.”

Speaking of the growth of mobile gaming sector we were curious to know about the audience’s preference, because audience engagement in a game results the success of the game. And over the time we all know preferences alter with time; as we all have witnessed the time where sub surfer players evolved as CoD Mobile player. To figure out the current scene we asked few of them about audience’s preference:

Dindukurthi added, “It is hard to say if the audience’s preferences have changed but the sheer number of people that are now playing, gives games in all the genres a chance to succeed! Although we see a lot of freemium games taking the bulk of the share, there are quite a few successful premium games as well including a few games made by our own Indian studios.”

Oberoi elucidates, “Audience’s preferences have evolved based on widespread data availability, faster processors as well as rapidly evolving business models. Early on in the decade, games like Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, simpler casual games which required much less data to download and were one-time standalone purchases were very popular. Slowly, as mobile publishers adapted to the try-and-buy and eventually to the freemium business model, Mid-Core games like Clash of Clans became successful. This gave rise to a mobile gaming audience which would easily adapt to hardcore games, paving the way for the current success like PUBG and Free Fire, regardless of its 1GB+ file size. New trends such as Real Money Gaming and esports now look to further disrupt the market and spread the audience out a lot more.”

Tandon notes, “I don’t believe people will ever stop playing hyper casual games as any industry matures more people will move towards midcore and hardcore games but casual games will always have an audience. Infact 2019 saw revival of hyper casual genre.”

As the mobile gaming industry is completely dependent on the changing technology, more and more changes are expected in the future to change the mobile gaming landscape.

Films are vanishing from Disney Plus

As the new year began, fans noticed films going missing from the Disney Plus streaming library. Movies like Dr. Doolittle, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, and The Sandlot disappeared from the platform.

Every few years Disney would open the Vault, releasing a classic title to DVD or Blu-Ray before quietly locking it away again for years as a way to build up interest. It was a genius move that many thought would go extinct with the release of Disney Plus. But Disney promised that all its classics would be permanently available to subscribers. That doesn’t apply to every movie on the service, however. Some films clearly aren’t going to live on Disney Plus forever.

Other platforms like HBO or Netflix put out monthly bulletins of content coming and leaving their streaming services each month, but Disney has only focused on new arrivals.

In a statement to Comicbook in November 2019, a Disney Plus spokesperson said, “there will not be a ‘rotating slate’ of licensed movies each month […] With Disney Plus, beloved classics from the Disney vault will now stream in a permanent home, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King — the entire 13-film signature collection — all available on day one.”

Disney Plus has quietly removed movies like The Shaggy Dog and Garfield 2: A Tail of Two Kitties in 2019 and there are films that are already set to leave Disney Plus. According to a report from Bloomberg, a few of the service’s biggest titles, like Black Panther, are currently set to lapse back to Netflix in 2026.Though few titles have disappeared from the service, Disney is also adding more to the Disney Plus library.

Five horror games of 2019 that will spook your socks off

You’ve immersed yourself in fantasy games, delved in adventure and even played puzzle ones but if there is one genre of gaming that piques our curiosity like no other, its horror. Gaming continues to be the ultimate experience in the media and entertainment space. If you enjoy a good scare, movies aren’t the only source. Let’s look at the games that managed to clatter our scary bones.

Until Dawn (PS4)

Until Dawn

Until Dawn

Until Dawn has become a classic among story-driven games. The survival-horror adventure follows a group of friends on a winter getaway to a snowy mountain lodge, where, one year prior, two of their friends disappeared and were never found. It’s the stereotypical setup for a slasher film, complete with flirty teens and a masked stalker on the loose, but the story takes some unexpected and unforgettable turns along the way. Most notably, Until Dawn is driven by player choice, and the consequences of your choices are deeply felt throughout the entire game. On your first playthrough, there are no redos if your action gets someone killed–only in subsequent playthroughs can you go back to specific chapters to make a different decision.

Worse Than Death (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mobile)

Worse than Death

This one is also a really immersive ride through a sleepy Stephen King-esque town. Worse Than Death is independent developer Benjamin Rivers’ third offering following Home and Alone With You, and it’s easily his topmost game thus far. The game melds Stranger Things tones with spooky dread to create a captivating horror mystery that’s fun to watch unravel.

Worse Than Death delicately balances storytelling, puzzle-solving, and stealth gameplay. The package of what you do in the game is search creepy abandoned areas for clues and key items, but when you encounter the game’s monsters, it can get quite intense.

Resident Evil 2 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Resident Evil

Resident Evil 2 may technically be a remake, but it’s not without some major embellishments and updates. Resident Evil 2 reimagines the 1998 original in 2019 from the ground up quite successfully, and it does so by ironing out the series’ rough edges while going in conjunction with the survival-horror elements that put Resident Evil on the map so long ago. By combining solid gameplay mechanics with high-tension horror, Resident Evil 2 is able to create a truly terrifying experience that’s as fun to play as it is scary.

Layers Of Fear 2 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Layers of Fear

Akin a horror movie, it’s instantly gains cult status, with fans praising and raving about the overall environments and scares. Ultimately, the game is an attempt at switching things up while staying true to the formula set forth by the first game.

Layers of Fear 2 isn’t for every single horror game fan out there, but it has plenty supernatural imagery and frights and chills down your spine.

 Blair Witch (Xbox One, PC)

Blair Witch

Blair Witch presents a package of many things with fun and surprises aplenty. It is based on a horror movie franchise. That said, there are brilliant moments to be experienced while playing Blair Witch. At times the game plunges into more of a fun category than scary given of its flimsy map layout, but overall the game does justice to the movie.

Kini Studios goes overseas with their funky comic merchandise

Kini Studios has been promoting brands through comics and comic merchandise for quite some time now. Having worked with various food chains, the studio’s merchandise is no more only targeting the Indian audiences, but has grabbed attention of comic enthusiasts worldwide.

Considering the popularity and love for the cute merchandise, many brands approach the studio for commissioned work. Rajan Khorana of Honest restaurant, USA approached Kini Studios for commissioned work on the food chain, overseas.

This food chain is currently based out of Schaumburg and Naperville, Illinois Chicago and McKinney, Texas. Started in 2018, Honest will have its fourth restaurant opening in February 2020.

Khorana wanted to do something Indian. “He wanted to promote Indian street food through cartoons and comics, so Abhijeet and I got in touch with him and discussed how we can use different products to put up the comic content,” mentioned Kini Studios co-founder Diksha Kini.

Honest serves a well-curated Indian menu including pav bhaji, vadapav and other street food, which is loved worldwide. Kini Studios created coasters, rubik’s cubes and pop sockets, to showcase the menu and make it interesting for the customers. The studio also created few frames to bring out comic Indian vibe at the restaurant.

“We are happy to use the medium of comics and merchandise to reach out to more audiences and get brands on board. The response for such projects has been very positive since people can relate more to it. Once people get their hands on these, the merchandise becomes extremely sharable on social media as well,” added Kini.

Kini Studios recently added a line of hand-sculpted terracotta cartoon figurines to its merchandise collection. In 2020, the studio is looking forward to creating more fun merchandise not just for other brands but also for their own characters such as Angry Maushi, Fanboys and Rhyme Fighters to name a few.
