Studio Ghibli is working on two new projects in 2020

Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio has announced that 2020 will be productive for them. The studio is working on two films including How Do You Live? (Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikuru ka), directed by Hayao Miyazaki and inspired by the early 20th century book by Genzaburo Yoshino.

The project was first announced in 2017. the project is proceeding at a very careful pace, with producer Toshio Suzuki saying during an NHK interview last month that the film was about 15 per cent completed after three-plus years.

How Do You Live? had been expected to debut timed to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, but the film doesn’t have an official release date yet.

Details on the second project are scanty, but the studio may be referring to the CG-animated film being directed by Miyazaki’s son Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea, From Up on Poppy Hill), which was also announced in 2017. The release date is yet to be confirmed.

The announcement reads:

Happy New Year to all.

Thank you for always supporting Studio Ghibli.

Last year was not a bad year for Studio Ghibli, because it was possible to share the news of our Kabuki stage production and other works; the official announcement of Ghibli Park, and active overseas development. However, disasters such as typhoons and heavy rains in Japan are continuing, and it is painful to think that there are a lot of people who are forced to have a hard life even at this time. We would like to express our sincere condolences to those affected by the damage, and pray for the rebuilding of our lives as soon as possible.

By the way, the zodiac sign of 2020 is “rat”. Rats are symbolic of prosperity because of their prolific reproduction, and are also said to be the angels of the god of fertility. I hope that the stagnant mood of society will be renewed, and that we will have a year of hope.

Studio Ghibli continues to work on two new films. Also, Ghibli Park has started in earnest, so we hope to be able to deliver a lot of excitement this year.

Cannot wait for another breathtaking project from the masters!

Project XCloud Android preview to be rolled out in more countries including India soon

In November Microsoft announced that it would be bringing the Project XCloud Android preview to more countries, including Canada, India, Japan, and Western Europe. It seems as though they might be ahead of schedule.

“The content library we have that runs on console and the community that’s attached to it is very compelling. So we are giving that access to people who only have a smartphone device. I think that’s the magic,” said Microsoft Gaming Cloud corporate vice president Kareem Choudry .

Although the trial version is there on Google play store but it is yet to be open for the Indians.

Microsoft’s experiment with Xcloud will depend upon India’s internet infrastructure  to run its streaming service, with India focusing more to improve it.

Emerging economies such as India, China, and others are the new destinations for gaming businesses to expand their empire and to reach billions of users. The free preview of the service will begin in India next year.

‘Frozen 2’ surpasses ‘Frozen’ to become the highest grossing animated film ever!

The sisters of Arendelle continues to rule the box office in the world of animation! This weekend, Disney’s Frozen 2 became the highest grossing animated film ever the in box office history, passing its predecessor’s six year record, Frozen which grossed $1.27 billion 2013.

Frozen 2 opened this weekend in Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia and has earned the highest openings ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios release in those countries.

Overall, Frozen 2 has brought in a current total of $450 million domestically and $875 million globally, bringing its total to $1.32 billion. It currently ranks number 14 on the all-time box office charts, and needs just $75 million to pass the $1.4 billion total of Avengers: Age of Ultron and enter the top 10.

Frozen 2  was one of the major reasons why Disney dominated 2019 box-office with the studio grosses reaching a record-breaking $3.76 billion domestic and $11.1 billion worldwide. This excludes the recently acquired 20th Century Fox, which would push the total to $4.3 billion domestic with a 37 per cent market share and $13.1 billion worldwide.

And that’s not all! Disney will likely lead the global charts in 2020 as well with films like Mulan and Black Widow. Walt Disney Animation Studios, under the new creative direction of Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee, will be creating original titles with Raya and the Last Dragon, to be released in November.

The Witcher 3 crosses 100,000 mark in the player count for the first time

Although The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt debuted in 2015, it saw its real sunshine five years later when the game surpassed its launch record for player count. Last week, the action role-play game hogged the limelight rocking at over 100 thousand concurrent players and marked a benchmark in the gaming franchise. Garnering traction by the hour, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is estimated to scale higher in player count as the time goes along.

The action RPG surpassed its initial release player count of 92 thousand last December with the growth reaching a percentage gain of +107.89 percent. Additionally, average player count doubled in December as well, staggering developers and avid Witcher gamers with the sudden increase in interest from 14 thousand gamers worldwide. A few weeks later, the franchise made records with the game surpassing 100 thousand concurrent players in 2020, gaining an increase of +29 percent and 8 thousand more Witchers in the realm. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also among the ten top games in player count on Steam currently.

The resurgence of popularity is a blessing for the action RPG game as the game gets new players that haven’t cared to play the game, drawing in old players of the game from years ago to once again to hunt down monsters.

Goa based animation studio creates 2D series for Norwegian Brunstad.tv

Based in the beautiful Goa, Fat Hamster Studio provides services ranging from traditional to computer-aided 2D animation, 3D animation, stop-motion, clay-mation and also AR and VR. The studios’ prior work spans short web-based promos to fully animated TV series, TV advertisements, VR amusement park rides, AR product displays and much more.

The studio is an amalgamation of art and technology and seeks to create engaging stories through design and avid direction. They have a small core team that focuses on art and storytelling whilst being able to adapt to multiple styles, stories, techniques and more. “We upscale and downscale according to project requirements but the core team steadily grows. We aim to have a diverse team at all times,” said Fat Hamster Studio partner Rohan Ponniah. The team at the studio consists of a fluffy bunch of hamsters (as Ponniah addresses them lovingly).

The studio is currently working on an animated kids’ series, Jesus is my Friend for Norwegian streaming platform, Brunstad.tv.

While talking to AnimationXpress, Ponniah said, “We have worked on international projects in the past and with that experience, we always look for ways to refine and aid the creative process of both the clients and ourselves. Working remotely can be tricky but we stick to a through pipeline on feedback and usually face less barriers than would be imagined. All in all, we enjoy working for various clients, be it domestic or international as we love to learn whilst we create.”

The series, Jesus is my Friend is based on Jesus’s life. The animation team at Fat Hamster did a great job handling the Norwegian animation. The production did of course have a few hiccups and settling in for us to understand and grow towards in the beginning. We had a great time on the project and learnt many things which we are proud of,” mentioned Ponniah.

The latest series created by the studio for the same platform was primarily aimed at Sunday School kids between the ages of five to 13. However, prior to this series, the studio has worked on another Brunstad.tv short that was aimed more towards older teens all the way to adults.

Fat Hamster Studio head of sales Judah Fernandez approached Brunstad.tv, knowing that they were looking to produce a lot of animated content. “We worked closely with them on a test project which they found to be very happy with in terms of quality and execution of production between the two companies. Since then we have been working with Brunstad.tv,” added Ponniah.

The first season of Jesus is my Friend had its opening episode played at a conference where over 7,000 people watched it live at the venue and over 10,000 streamed it live too. The series has worked phenomenally well at their Sunday School, so much so that they are now translating it into 14 different languages.

Brunstad.tv will be starting a new series in 3D and have chosen Fat Hamster Studio to create the same, looking at their past working experience with the studio.

Seems like Indian animation studios are sure making a place in the international market, and we will soon witness a different scenario in the industry. Keep doing the good work fluffy hamsters!

“‘Rakshak’ film adaptation is the way to go for Indian Comics that has long been marginalised”: Shamik Dasgupta

Helmed by noted filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, Yali Dream Creations’ comics Rakshak is all set to come alive on big screens. Gupta (Shootout at Lokhandwala, Kaabil, Jazbaa and Shootout at Wadala fame) took to Twitter to announce that he’ll be directing the graphic novel into a “massive and ambitious” film, first of its kind in India.

Yali Dream Creations’ Rakshak had found loyal admirers since it came to life. Yali Creations creative director Shamik Dasgupta told AnimationXpress, “I came in touch with Sanjay Gupta when I was working with him on another project. At that time I pitched Rakshak to him. However due to his busy schedule, he was not able to read the whole four part series of Rakshak season one. During that time actor John Abraham also came to know of Rakshak. Presently, when I visited the sets of Mumbai Saga, Gupta Sir’s next movie, I met John once again, and it was him who suggested the idea of making Rakshak as a major motion picture to Gupta Sir. , who was finally able to read all the four parts. That’s when he showed keen interest in making it. After that Yali Dream Creations (publisher of Rakshak) sold the rights of the comics to Gupta Sir. This was a long journey comprising about two years, but finally we are very happy to collaborate with Gupta Sir to bring Rakshak into live action.

Going on floors at the later half of 2020, Gupta had spoken to a press publication about the Indian sci-fi genre to be underutilised in films, despite having great potential. He also added that Rakshak deeply resonates with the current scenario and fits in perfectly.

‘Rakshak’ Issue one and two

Rakshak is a vigilante sans superpowers, just like Batman, Punisher, Daredevil and others.  The uniqueness of Rakshak as a vigilante comes from the fact that he is an ex-Indian army (aka Captain Aditya Shergill) marine commando or MARCO, equivalent to the US Navy Seals. Having lost a limb serving his country, and having seen the worst in humanity, wounded both in body and soul, he wants nothing but to settle down with his family – sister, brother-in-law (who happens to be a white American) and his teenage niece, a comic book addict.

Like most vigilantes, his journey towards exacting justice is also rooted in a personal tragedy, akin to the great violent tragedy of the Nirbhaya Rape case in Delhi which shook the world. This tragedy drove him to the edge and he decided to take law in his own hands, partially because of the guilt of not being able to save his sister and brother-in-law and mostly because he wants to rekindle hope and motivation for his orphaned niece. Thus Shergill inspired from comic book superheroes, decides to don the mantle of Rakshak, the Protector.

‘Rakshak’ Issue three and four

Added Dasgupta, “The uniqueness of Rakshak is the ground reality on which it is based: what if a normal human being, working within the boundaries of a code of no killing, without the backing of billions of dollars, decides to take the law in his hands as a masked vigilante? How will the world react? What real life challenges will he face in his sojourn against injustice and crime? Rakshak is a dark, cerebral, yet elevating tale of one man who decided to stand up and say ‘No’.”

In times when Hollywood film industry is thriving… and how, with plethora of superhero tales based on comics, Indian film industry mostly lacks homegrown superheroes or heroines. With Rakshak, we can hope Indian Comics to become big in theaters and turn out to be successful.

Shamik Dasgupta

Dasgupta, elated on his comics Rakshak, paving the way, commented, “It is a fantastic feeling and with Gupta Sir directing the project, I feel the content is in very capable hands, since he is veteran in Hindi film industry for two decades. This, according to me is the way to go. Only time will tell if this is the beginning. It will all depend on the success of Rakshak. So far, Indian comics has been marginalised to a niche fan base, once a live action adaptation happens from a major production house like White Feather Films, it will open the gateway. This is what has been happening in Hollywood for more than decades now and finally it is time that it happens in India as well. The bigger achievement is, Rakshak is going to be the first movie adapted from an existing content published as a graphic novel series. So far characters like Krrish, Baahubali and so on, are original creations of the filmmakers debuting as a film content only. This is the first time a published superhero is going to be adapted to the big screen like DC, Marvel and other American comic publishers. I strongly believe Indian comics and animation needs to come out of the trope of Mythology as a  crutch for any genre stories. We need to tell original stories which are pertinent to the present times and society.”

So movie buffs, ready to trigger your inner Rakshak?

#FeatureFriday: Are we feeling bullish about bulls yet?

Creature animation is a complex task that involves a fair amount of technology and creativity to bring characters to life. Elements such as details in the eyes, shadows, fur simulations, fluid movements and skin need to be perfectly crafted in order to have a convincing and photorealistic final output that passes the acid test of public scrutiny. While there have been CGI creatures in Indian cinema which were indistinguishable from the real animals, we have been treated to the ones that just didn’t pass muster with the audiences.

Pegged as a VFX spectacle by many, Kalank has its own detractors when it comes to CGI sequences. While the overall movie spanned over world-class visual effects and landscapes, there is one sequences that stuck out like a sore thumb, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of beholders.

CGI Bull fight scene in Kalank had landed in the eye of storm, leading netizens and memers to call out its glaring artificiality. When AnimationXpress had spoken to the now-defunct FluiidMask Studio about the infamous scene, they had cited colour grading as the main cause of the debacle. Understandably so, one can work round the clock to create a marvellous CG character but the process of colour grading can still botch up the imagery especially when it is done in another studio facility. Therefore, it is ideal that the grading gets done in the same studio where the VFX supervisors are able to oversee the process.

Bahubali franchise which is lauded for its VFX quotient had also attempted a rather unpleasing bullfight scene that drew flak for its inadequacies. While the entire movie is an absolute treat to watch, it’s the bull scene that looks manifestly off and rather incomplete. Neither is there any fur work properly executed nor is there any photorealistic effect to make the animal less phony.

Down south, depicting the age-old tradition of Jallikattu in the movie Ilami’s attempt at the bullfight scene has proved how creating the complex imagery of bull-taming isn’t a piece of cake. The bull looks jarringly distinguishable from reality as the men interact with it in the grappling sequence.

Ilami

Given the bull-fight depictions across the Indian movie landscape, there is indeed a lot of learnings to absorb and the ground to cover. With improved artistry, technological improvements, requisite budgets and the profusion of OTT giving way to high-quality VFX, we wonder if filmmakers are feeling bullish about the bulls yet?
