Netflix takes over the iconic New York City movie theater for movie screenings, events and releases

Streaming giant Netflix has lately taken over the lease of the iconic New York City movie theater, The Paris to use it for movie screenings, events and releases. The theater was shut down in August.

Netflix intends to use the theater for releases and special events, including screenings. Earlier this month, Netflix screened the movie Marriage Story at the Manhattan theater, which stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. The movie is about a couple that’s divorcing, and it’s scheduled to release on 6 December selected theaters in the U.S. and U.K.

Commenting on this acquisition, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a press release, “After 71 years, the Paris Theatre has an enduring legacy, and remains the destination for a one-of-a-kind movie-going experience. We are incredibly proud to preserve this historic New York institution so it can continue to be a cinematic home for film lovers.”

The theater had a grand opening back in 1948 with Marlene Dietrich inaugurating the ceremony. The theater originally showed French movies and developed a reputation for showing parallel movies. The latest movie it screened before Netflix took over was titled Pavarotti by Ron Howard.

Hotshots of the industry including famed movie director Steven Spielberg, have spoken out against the inclusion of Netflix in awards ceremonies like the Oscars, arguing that the company only produces TV films. However, Netflix has been producing films that have theatrical releases as well, before they debut on the service. (The Two Popes and I Lost My Body are both set for theatrical releases.)

Star India suffers loss of Rs. 1,216 crore in FY19

As per its filings with the registrar of companies (RoC), Star India has reported a net loss of Rs. 1,216 crore (12160 million) for the FY19, in comparison to its net profit of Rs. 287.7 crore a year ago. (According to The Economic Times)

After Walt Disney acquired Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox in a $71 billion cash and stock deal in June 2018, Star India’s revenue from operations increased by 35 per cent YoY to Rs 12,341 crore in FY19. The merger makes Star India, Fox Star Studios and Hotstar in India, a part of Walt Disney.

The company’s total revenue from operations stood at ₹12,341 crore in FY19 compared with Rs. 9,149 crore a year ago. This includes advertising revenues of Rs. 7,311 crore ($73110 million), up by 49 per cent, and distribution revenue of Rs. 4,128 crore ($41280 million), up by 9 per cent. Revenue from other sales and services doubled to Rs. 902 crore ($9020 million).

The loss was attributed to the recorded expenses of Rs. 4,000 crore on its marquee sports property, the Indian Premier League (IPL), despite a 35 per cent increase in revenues during the year. In September 2017, Star India bagged the global broadcast and digital rights for the IPL for Rs. 16,347.50 crore ($163475 million) for five years (2018-2022).

The loss was also attributed to Star’s digital streaming platform Hotstar, which posted a net loss of Rs 558.38 crore ($5583.8 million) on revenue of Rs 1,112.74 crore for FY19. During the fiscal, Star India invested Rs 832.32 crore ($8323.2 million) in Novi Digital, the holding company of Hotstar.

The conglomerate’s total expenditure also jumped 58 per cent to Rs. 13,707 crore from rs. 8,694 crore a year ago. The spike in costs may be primarily attributed to a 66% increase in programming and operating cost to ₹10,296 crore, a 34% jump in employee cost to ₹1,198 crore, and a 57 per cent jump in marketing cost to Rs. 1,168 crore.

This news comes only a few weeks after the exit of former Star and Disney India managing director Sanjay Gupta, who lately joined Google India as country manager and vice-president of sales and operations for the country.

As far as new offerings go, India awaits the streaming of Disney+ content on Hotstar soon. Walt Disney that launched the ad-free video streaming service in the United States earlier this month, will route the original content created for the new OTT service and its movie library to Indian audiences through Hotstar.

Disney+ has debuted with content bundled from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic. Priced at $6.99 per month and $69.99 per year in the US, the service launched with nine original shows.

In India, Star plans to continue with its current subscription plans—Hotstar Premium at Rs. 299 per month and Rs. 999 per year and Hotstar VIP at Rs. 365 per year, even after the launch of Disney+.

#Review: ‘Commando 3’ ranks ranks high on action but the story falls flat

You attempt a beaten-to-the-hilt shtick and liberally pepper it with a heavy dose of patriotism, you are already treading on a slippery slope. Since pop patriotism is the flavour of the season, this movie employs the theme to the fullest. With special OP commando played by Vidyut Jamwal saving the country and bringing the perpetrator to justice, the movie does maintain the Commando franchise thematics in the way action takes place yet one could dispense away with over-the-top theatrics.

In this new sequel, Vidyut Jammwal comes back as the eponymous Commando, Karanveer Singh Dogra, who is out to diffuse a yet another web of doom that threatens to destroy his country. In some scenes, you can sense a Batman vs Joker interrogation inspiration too.

We’ve had many a story where the hero saves the world from Jihadi terrorism and this films brings nothing new to the table. Movie does well on the VFX front with chase scenes, fight scenes and landscapes. The formulaic approach is too jarring and lacks soul.

Film opens with brainwashed youngsters, who converted to Islam from Hinduism, bent on wreaking havoc on the country. You can now see how filmmakers’ commitment to ticking boxes on the recipe of an action movie. Hero’s entry and machismo scene – Check, Establishing his might – Check, Saving young chicks from thugs scene – Check..

From cow politics to Babri Masjid, the script tries to structure the narrative around the political issues of India.  High-octane action sequences packed with punched and kicks stop the London-based terror mastermind rather than an intelligent plan.

Gulshan Devaiah brilliantly portays the sinister character whist the leading ladies Adah Sharma and Angira Dharr are shown in powerful roles. All in all, if you’re for a high-octane action sequences and want to watch Vidyut kick butts, this movie’s for you.

‘Dota 2’ 7.23 update includes new characters, bunch of new items and more

Valve recently unleashed a massive Dota 2 update recently which not only introduces two new heroes but upends the game’s meta as well. This is one of the biggest Dota 2 update as it he 7.23 update alters the gameplay which will recasts existing strategies.

The two new heroes which added in the characters tray includes  the core hero Void Spirit and support hero Beatrix Snapfire. The character Beatrix has an unique ability that lets her pet Mortimer or even an ally to hop a short distance.

Next hero Void Spirit, is the fourth and eldest of Dota 2’s “spirit brethren,” which also includes Storm, Earth, and Ember. “Able to step into and out of the mortal plane at will, he easily outmaneuvers opponents to strike from wherever he desires, calling upon the powers of the aether to shield him in times of need,” the update page says.

Here are more updates

  • Neutral monsters now drop a set of unsaleable items, which one can trade within the team. 62 unique neutral items are now in the game, Valve has attempted to balance things out by both increasing player’s backpack slots, buffing up the neutral monsters you’d be taking these items from, and deleting the Side Shops.
  • Every player has their own couriers to gain levels alongside their heroes.Couriers provide 85 GPM while alive and can use abilities.
  • All heroes can now level up to 30. Once they get there, they unlock their entire talent tree, massively increasing the power of every hero late game. Respawn time will not increase past level 25, and XP bounties max out at level 25 values.
  • Observer Wards are now free.
  • Heroes start with 3 Town Portal Scrolls.
  • Map layout redesigned.
  • Stout Shield has been removed from the game. Originally a must-buy for many heroes, the item has been rendered obsolete by a passive 8 Damage Block granted to all melee heroes. The removal has also changed the recipe for Vanguard, which now needs an additional 200 gold to be built.
  • The patch has made notable hints at a so-called “Mango Season,” in both the updated Enchanted Mango item which can now be stacked up to three times and the new Mango Tree neutral monster item.
  • Five tiers of items will drop over the course of a game, and each drop within a tier will halve the odds of subsequent drops: There’s a ten percent chance that a Tier 1 item will drop during the 5-15 minute window, for instance, and if one does, the odds reduce to five percent for the next drop, and so forth.

Overall, the 7.23 update seems focused on making games quicker, and certainly with mass couriers, items galore, and a lot more damage tied into existing items, the pace of the game will change from one way or another

Hindus express concern at Netflix’s ‘Ramayana’ inspired animation series ‘Heaven’s Forest’

Hindus are urging Netflix to stay true to the story and the spirit of Hindu scripture Ramayana when borrowing storyline and characters from it in its reportedly upcoming animated series Heaven’s Forest. Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit scripture that consists of 24,000 stanzas, explores various themes; including human existence, concept of dharma, amongst others.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that Ramayana was a highly revered scripture of Hinduism. Hindus were fine with Hollywood and Bollywood making movies about Ramayana, but the final product should be the true depiction of it and not a fantasized or a re-imagined version.

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that re-imagining of Hindu scriptures could be hurtful to the devotees. Hindus welcomed Hollywood/Bollywood to immerse in Hinduism, but taking it seriously and respectfully and not for refashioning Hinduism concepts and symbols for mercantile greed.

He further said that changing Ramayana to fit the Hollywood/Bollywood machine was likely to be distressful to the Hindu sentiments. Ramayana was an integral part of Hinduism and was held in such reverence that Hindus believed that simply reading/hearing of it showered blessings upon the reader/listener. Rama, the hero of Ramayana, was incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and was worshiped by Hindus.

Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about 1.1 billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken frivolously. Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Zed indicated.
