Fighting game circuit Red Bull Conquest returns with qualifiers across eight U.S. cities

Fighters, get ready for a new battle! Red Bull has announced the return of Red Bull Conquest, challenging the top fighting game players in the United States to RISE, RALLY and CONQUER tournament circuit featuring popular fighting titles Street FighterV: Arcade Edition and TEKKEN 7, and newcomer Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late. Qualifiers will take place across eight cities, kicking off on 24 August and culminating with the Red Bull Conquest 2019 National Finals in November. Winners from each qualifying event will experience a new, unique competitive format in which they form a three-person team to earn the title of Conquest champions at the finals.

Red Bull Conquest united the leading fighting game communities (FGC) across the country by encouraging local pride during the circuit’s events.

Hopeful players can attend RISE events to scout out competition and practice ahead of their region’s qualifier (hint: players can assess strengths and weaknesses of other teams for training purposes). Competitors will then RALLY and compete to earn the top spot in their respective title at their local qualifier event. Lastly, the winning competitors from the eight RALLY events in each of the three games will come together to form a team for the Red Bull Conquest national finals, where only one region will CONQUER and hoist the trophy for their region.

The shift to eight qualifiers for Red Bull Conquest 2019 will ensure a deeper pool of talent and more intense competition at each stop as top players are welcomed from around the nation. Beyond rekindling old rivalries, the qualifiers will serve as a shot for redemption from last year’s events.

Red Bull will also be bringing back renowned FGC commentators and personalities Tasty Steve, Yipes, Persia and Vicious to host each of the regional qualifying events in the Conquest series. The hosts will serve as on-the-ground ambassadors at each of the regional qualifying events this summer to stream and share their FGC expertise.

In 2018, more than 3,000 players embarked on the Red Bull Conquest journey and competed in RISE, RALLY and CONQUER events. New York City emerged victorious during the National Finals in Washington D.C., claiming the highly coveted title of top fighting game region in the United States against other top competing regions, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta and more. Team New York City was comprised of Victor “Punk” Woodley, Eli “LostSoul” Rabadad and Anthony “Mr.Whooppee”

The official partners for Red Bull Conquest 2019 are Alienware and HyperX. Both partners will be providing their latest hardware for all competitors at each regional qualifier and the finals.

Nagaland hosts their first PUBG Mobile tournament

Joining the popularity race Nagaland hosted the first-ever PUBG Mobile Tournament which has witnessed gamers from Nagaland and the neighbouring states in Northeast India participating in a competition. The  tournament saw 100 participants which mean 25 squads and it was organised by Life Now Events.

Team RGC hailed as the champions and won prize money of Rs 80,000. Team Bobo and WELP came in at first and second runners-up with Rs 40,000 and Rs 20,000 as prize money, respectively.

Cheering to the gaming enthusiasts  Life Now Events director Atsung Jamir said “It has a wide scope now. So instead of fighting it, if there can be one-two gamers from here who can seriously go further, we wanted to give them the platform considering that there are many good gamers from Nagaland.”

According to a report, the tournament saw players from Shillong and Diphu, as well as Mokokchung, Dimapur and Kohima.

There was also an MVP (Most Valuable Player) award which saw Shin (RGC), Magnus (Bobo) and Gyro San (WELP) winning Rs 5,000, Rs 2,500 and Rs 2,500 as prize money, respectively

Marvel Studios announces humongous ‘Phase 4’ line-up

Good news for Marvel fans! 

Marvel Studios has announced its ‘Phase 4’ lineup of movies and series during their presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced the diverse line-up which will include (Marvel Cinematic Universe) MCU’s first Asian superhero movie, MCU’s first deaf superhero and the reveal of the first openly queer superhero.

The list of films announced include: Thor: Love and Thunder, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Widow, The Eternals, Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Blade and series like – Loki, Wanda Vision, Hawkeye, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and What If…?, the first animated series in MCU to be streaming on Disney+.

Fiege began the panel by introducing the diverse cast of The Eternals, directed by Chloe Zhao. The lineup includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjani and Richard Madden, all playing one family. Joining them will be actor Lauren Ridloff, who will play the first deaf character in the MCU in that movie.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will see Marvel’ first Asian superhero film starring Canadian actor Simu Liu as a master of martial arts who faces off against The Mandarin-played by veteran actor Tony Leung.

The fourth Thor movie, Thor: Love and Thunder will find Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, ruler of Asgard, come out as a queer character. 

Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali will reboot Blade, once made immortal by Wesley Snipes. In the last few years, Marvel has introduced a more varied array of comics characters to the Avengers crew, including Black Panther and Captain Marvel, the first black lead and female lead in an MCU movie, respectively.

Now they’re offering correctives: Giving Black Widow her own movie, evolving Thompson and Portman’s characters into leads instead of supporting players, retconning the Mandarin character.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ leaves behind ‘Avatar’ to become the highest grossing film of all time

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame has dethroned James Cameron’s colossus Avatar (2009) to become the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office, as Marvel chief Kevin Feige announced at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). 

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Endgame saw the end of Thanos and few of our beloved “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” leaving the superhero squad. 

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights,” said Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn said in a statement.

According to Disney, Avengers: Endgame‘s global gross was $2.7892 billion, $500,000 behind Avatar‘s $2.7897 billion as of Friday. By Sunday, Endgame‘s total reached $2.790 billion. At the end of last weekend, Endgame trailed Avatar by $7 million. 

Avatar is now part of ‘The House of  Mouse’ empire following Disney’s acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox in late March.

“Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever… The talented filmmakers have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora,” added Horn.

Avengers: Endgame has shattered numerous records since debuting in cinemas in late April. The superhero extravaganza scored the biggest global opening of all time with $1.22 billion, including an all-time high of $357.1 million domestically and $866.5 million overseas.

The film is the fourth outing in the blockbuster Avengers series and the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In late June, Avengers: Endgame was re-released in theaters with roughly six minutes of new footage in a bid to surpass Avatar.

Avengers: Endgame now stands with a total of $853.4 million domestically and $1.9358 billion internationally.

Deadly fire kills 33 in Kyoto Animation Studio after a man sets it ablaze

Massive fire broke out at Kyoto Animation Studio as a man screaming “You die!” burst into the studio, splashed flammable liquid and set it on fire on Thursday. This resulted in the death of 33 people in an attack that shocked the country and brought an outpouring of grief from anime fans.

36 others were injured, some of them critically, in a blaze that sent people scrambling up the stairs towards the roof to escape what proved to be Japan’s deadliest fire in nearly two decades. Others emerged bleeding, blackened and barefoot. Japanese media reported the fire might have been set near the front door, forcing people to find other ways out.

The suspect, identified as a 41-year-old man who was not an employee of the studio, was injured and taken to a hospital. Police gave no details on the motive, but a witness told Japanese TV that the attacker angrily complained that something of his had been stolen, possibly by the company.

Most of the victims were employees of the studio, Kyoto Animation, which works on movies and TV productions but is best known for its mega-hit stories featuring high school girls. The tales are so popular that fans make pilgrimages to some of the places depicted.

The blaze started in the three-story building in Japan’s ancient capital after the attacker sprayed most probably gasoline, police and fire officials said.

“There was an explosion, then I heard people shouting, some asking for help. Black smoke was rising from windows on upper floors. Ten there was a man struggling to crawl out of the window,” a witness told TBS TV. 

Fire expert Yuji Hasemi at Waseda University told NHK that paper drawings and other documents in the studio also may have contributed to the fire’s rapid spread. A witness who saw the attacker being approached by police told Japanese media that the man admitted spreading gasoline and setting the fire with a lighter. She told NHK public television that the man had burns on his arms and legs and complained that something had been stolen from him.

“He seemed to have grudges against society, and he was talking angrily to the policemen, too, though he was struggling with pain. He also seemedto have a grudge against Kyoto Animation,” she told Kyodo News.

Kyoto Animation, better known as KyoAni, was founded in 1981 as an animation and comic book production studio, and its hits include Lucky Star of 2008, K-On! in 2011 and Haruhi Suzumiya in 2009.

The company does not have a major presence outside Japan, though it was hired to do secondary animation work on a 1998 Pokemon feature that appeared in U.S. theaters and a Winnie the Pooh video.

“My heart is in extreme pain. Why on earth did such violence have to be used?” company president Hideaki Hatta said. Hatta said the company had received anonymous death threats by email in the past, but he did not link them to Thursday’s attack.

Anime fans expressed anger, prayed and mourned the victims on social media. A crowd-funding site was set up to help the company rebuild.

Fire officials said more than 70 people were in the building at the time. The death toll exceeded that of a 2016 attack by a man who stabbed and killed 19 people at a nursing home in Tokyo.

Marvel Games reveals Loki is a playable character in the ‘MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order’ game

For the first time in the series, Loki joins the alliance as a playable character in the MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order game, according to information revealed at the Marvel Games panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The game also will be getting free updates, as well as a series of paid DLC packs. These revelations were made just hours before the 19 July launch of the Nintendo Switch game.

The panel announced that new playable characters Cyclops and Colossus would arrive as part of a free update to the game on 30 August, followed by a series of alternate outfits for all of the playable characters in the game after launch through Q1 of 2020.

With the paid expansion pass for $19.99, players get access to three exclusive DLC packs as they release. These packs, which won’t be available for individual purchase, will include story content and playable characters from popular franchises like the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Marvel Knights. The first paid DLC pack is due to arrive sometime this fall and will add Moon Knight, Blade, Punisher and Morbius to the playable roster of characters. Details about the two additional paid DLC packs will be announced in the future.

MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order involves a huge cast of Marvel Super Heroes that includes Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Captain America, the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men, to name just a few.
