‘The Flash’ Finale Preview Released

All season on The Flash, the heroes have been endeavouring to bring down a menacing villain whose entire focus is the killing of metahumans. Initially, they were fighting Cicada, a man named Orlin Dwyer. Now, with the finale in sight, Team Flash has discovered that things don’t stack up with Cicada II and it’s been disclosed that there’s an even eviler: none other than Reverse Flash. Now, in a new promo, it appears that Team Flash will be dealing with both its oldest enemy and its newest in a tense season finale.

The CW has released a promo for Legacy, the season five finale of The Flash. It was revealed that Thawne has been manipulating the situation the whole time, making sure things are back to where Team Flash would attempt to destroy Cicada’s dagger. It seems that by doing so, Thawne will end up with the dagger in the future, allowing for the villain who has been imprisoned in the future.

Barry (Grant Gustin) faces off with his oldest, and most formidable nemesis, Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh). Gregory Smith directed the episode with story by Lauren Certo and teleplay by Todd Helbing & Eric Wallace.

This, along with some of the other alterations to the timeline that have been made as a result of Nora’s arrival in the present, will make Crisis on Infinite Earths happen in 2019 instead of 2024. If that’s the case, it could mean major changes to the Arrowverse overall, including the popular fan theory that Arrow‘s Oliver Queen will ultimately sacrifice himself to save Barry once Crisis arrives this fall, something that was somewhat teased in this season’s Elseworlds crossover when Oliver spoke with the Monitor in an attempt to prevent both The Flash and Supergirl dying to save the world in that struggle as well. Whatever the case, Legacy could be a huge hint towards what’s coming in Crisis.

Legacy will debut on 14 May

CG Dragons portrayed in cinema and series over the years

Dragons have been at the centre of the fantasy genre as they have captivated people over generations with their fire-breathing and flying antics. These glorious creatures of fantasy have been the favourites of not just authors and fans but filmmakers too. Here are some dragons that have won us over with their CGI attributes and intricacies.

Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal – Game of Thrones (2011-2019)

Daenerys and dragon Drogon

Daenerys becomes a doting mother of dragons and raises her three scaly children, training them for the battle and nurturing them with the mother’s love. The most accurate and comprehensive dragons ever created on screen.

Smaug – The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Smaug

Using the technology of motion capture, Benedict Cumberbatch makes this dragon his own with his performance. He didn’t just voice the dragon, he became it by studying lizards at the London Zoo and wearing a motion-capture suit while acting out scenes. He even gets some tips from Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum in the franchise after which he also played Bagheera in his movie Mowgli using the same motion-capture technology.

Draco – DragonHeart (1996)

Draco

Having earned an Oscar nomination for visual effects, this movie features Draco voiced by Sean Connery, last of the dragons that could speak and star alongside real actors and computer-animated effects.

Elliot –
Pete’s Dragon (2016)

Pete’s Dragon

The original Disney film, which featured an animated, purple-haired Elliot, received a brilliant remake in 2016 starring Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard. Pete Healy, an orphan, travels with Grace, a ranger, to search his friend Elliot, a green dragon with wings after he disappears from the forest.

Dragon – Shrek (2001).

Dragon

Dragon is Donkey’s love interest and eventual wife from the Shrek franchise. She initially started out as an antagonist, charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her castle, but later reforms and helps Shrek as a supporting protagonist.

We hope you liked the list of dragons that won our hearts through their portrayals. Stay tuned for more updates.

How hyper-casual gaming platform aims to transform the traditional casual gaming scene in India

Akin to a bird waggling its wings and flying right into the sky, hyper-casual games have flown into the mobile gaming space. Thanks to hyper-casual games makers and the curiosity of the consumers, the vicious circle of time are helping mobile casual gaming to expand exponentially.

The minuscule titles of hyper-casual games have helped brands around the world to earn a fortune and to create space in the gaming industry for global stardom. In India, hyper-casual titles have established prominence in the industry. Speaking of which Indian hyper-casual games platform  Pocket League has witnessed 100,000 registrations, with over 20 million game replays and average time spent per user per day of 30 minutes.

Speaking with Animation Xpress, Pocket League’s founder Karan Khairajani shared the journey of hyper-casual games platform started in August 2018. Prior to that, Khairajani was running an independent gaming studio, called All in a Days Play, which developed and published trivia, hyper-casual and simulation games on the various app stores. Across the life span of All in a Days Play, they did over 20 million worldwide game downloads.

They launched the hyper-casual game platform Pocket League android app in early November where one can earn real cash by playing hyper-casual games available in the platform. With a team of eight members, the duo founders Karan Khairajani and Surojit Roy initiated the journey of hyper-casual gaming platforms. Roy is a games industry veteran, his previous start-up was BYOF studios, which made social and casual titles targeting the India market. Back in 2010, he was a professional Dota player and captained India at several International tournaments and also co-founded AFK Gaming, an e-sports start-up.

Hyper casual games are something where the gamers can be anybody irrespective of age and one can play the game irrespective of time and place as well. Both Roy and Khairajani have been huge fans of hyper-casual games, which have been heavily popularised by Ketchapp and Voodoo, over the last few years.  These games are easy to get into yet hard to master and mastering these games requires a lot of practice and skill. Pocket League enables gamers to compete against each other for real money.

Khairajani adds, “There are various contests available on the platform which vary with several factors such as entry fees, pay-out, number of entries, number of retries, duration and so on. Players pick a contest, pay an entry fee and set a high-score. The one who tops the leaderboard at the end of the contest wins the prize money. Contests can have several winners too and we generally reward at least 50 per cent of the players in a specific contest. The model is similar to daily fantasy sports games, with the variation being that the user plays the game and aims to set as high a score as possible, instead of picking a team for a real-world sporting event.”

The platform offers players with bonus money on sign-up which can be utilised to try out games available on the platform and to figure out what their favourite title is.  Apart from that the platform does conduct contests which players can play without paying any entry fees along with contests where players have to pay an entry fee to play.

Considering the current Indian gaming market scenario, we asked him about the challenges he faces being in the industry. To which, he replied “The Indian gaming industry is growing rapidly and there is some fantastic talent out there. The bigger studios are putting out great quality content. They are innovating with content targeting India. Some of the work being done by independent studios is top-notch. From a consumer stand-point, monetization remains a major issue when targeting the India market.”

The platform recently launched a game named as Subway Dash which is a 3D runner game where the player has to avoid obstacles by switching lanes, jumping and rolling. It is a single-player game with players competing against others on the leaderboard. He shared, “Each game session of Subway Dash is limited to 90 seconds. Collecting coins gives extra points, so the aim is to survive until the end and collect as many coins as possible.”

They were discrete about disclosing their upcoming games on the platform but including Subway dash there are eight games which are available on the platform. For Subway Dash they took three weeks to develop, however they set a target of two weeks for the development of new titles. The most popular game is Cricket Clash, which is a 2D side-view batting game. Along with that, there are various contest modes which are available in this game like Super Over, which gives players only six balls to set a high score. Besides this, the other popular games include Highway Driver(3D car driving) and Crush the Candy(Match three).

When asked about his inspiration to initiate with not just games but a complete gaming platform he answered, “traditionally, hyper-casual games have a short lifespan. There are many such titles available on the app stores and players are scattered across them. We see having a platform as an opportunity to get these gamers to come together, compete against and interact with one another.”

The introduction of gaming platform is currently niche in India although people like Karan Khairajani and Surojit Roy have spun the wheel on transforming the traditional method of playing video games in the country. Now how the industry beholds it, only time can tell!

“The story of the friendship between two young girls, takes us back on a journey to our childhood and lets us almost physically re-live memories. With an unusual use of materials, which are a fundamental part of the storytelling, and subtle design the director evokes a closeness of feelings we all connect to. Pure and honest, the film creates the magical athmosphere that only cinema, in its best way, can achieve.”

Sounds good

Producer: Priit Pärn, Olga Pärn

“Art exhibitions, mushrooms and boom operating are a unique combination, even for animation. Sounds Good explores those under-appreciated topics in a playful and experimental way. The sound-driven film connects an intriguing rhythmical montage with unconventional perspectives and a reduced graphic style and colour scheme. For us, this sounds good. Looks good. Feels good, too.”

It’s wet!

“We would like to thank everyone involved with the festival for inviting the three of us to work together on this jury. First, we would like to acknowledge every filmmaker who submitted a film for consideration, and particularly the ten whose films we viewed in the past week. Each one was a labour of love and clearly born of a deep desire to tell their story. We chose the film “Mirai No Mirai”. We appreciated so much the filmmakers inviting us into this home, and offering us the opportunity to watch this family grow together, and to help us understand our deep and human connection to those who came before us.”

Bear with me
Director & Producer: Daphna Awadish
Netherlands 2018

“It’s the little things that count. Everyday life, small rituals after a hard days’ work, a stroll at the lake. These little things mean so much, especially if they cannot be enjoyed daily. Our winning film tells these miniature stories, underlining in the truest sense of the word the experiences of immigrants and points out that home is where the heart is. We are very happy to award the FAN-tastic Price to “Bear with me” and welcome Daphna Awadish to the Animation Family!”

The Kite
Regie: Martin Smatana
Czech Republic, Slovenia 2018

“… because it’s beautiful. We liked the way the subject of aging and dying was presented. The film was sad, but it also gives courage and shows that beloved people never really leave us, but live on through our memories… perhaps above the clouds, perhaps with a dragon.”

German Animation Screenplay Award
Award for the best German-language screenplay for an animated feature film with a cash prize of $2799.88, donated by Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart.

Aisha’s Light from Xavier Romero and Llorenç Español

“AISHA’S LIGHT is a classic and at the same time ever-so-current tale about friendship and the bringing together of different religions and traditions. It is also an action-packed adventure which seeks to illuminate the screen with the “fireworks of enlightenment” – and we are very much looking forward to seeing it!”

 German Voice Actor Award

Award for the best German voice actor in an animated feature film.
Otto Waalkes in The Grinch

“Often in animated films one expects a firework of gags and overwhelming images – and The Grinch certainly has that to offer – but here, thanks to Otto’s art of language, quite universal and fundamental questions of community and living together are posed, which we have increasingly lost lately.
Germany’s Next Animation Talent
Award for a creative, innovative project with a cash prize for nominees and the winner in total of $39198.25 , donated by Studio 100 Media GmbH | m4e AG

Juli auf dem Zauberberg from Elisabeth Jakobi

“Juli auf dem Zauberberg is full of witty details and interesting visual solutions, and the series captivates us by being close to reality and far from it at the same time. This is all the more astonishing, as the outlandish characters have absolutely nothing to do with writer Elisabeth Jakobi’s family environment! The visual style, the first scribbles and mood pictures for Juli auf dem Zauberberg give us an idea of its international potential, while the created life-world could serve as a blueprint for any German patchwork family. With its subtle humour, sometimes absurd storylines, and droll cast of characters, the series project never comes across as patronising or tiring. At every turn, new adventures and surprises await us, fascinating young and old alike. And when Juli can overcome her fear of spiders alongside the course of the series too, it has a marvellous pedagogical side effect. But, same as everything else in Juli auf dem Zauberberg, this is a matter of sheer coincide.

Trickstar Business Award
Award for innovative business concepts in the field of animation with a cash prize of $8399.63, donated by Verband Region Stuttgart

CoboStories from Copenhagen Bombay

“CoboStories is an app and a physical stand that allows teachers and pedagogues to create stop motion movies and digital books with children and pupils. The tool supports teaching in a creative process and is based on the 21st century learning skills as well as the four C’s: Creativity, Critical thinking, Collaboration and Communication. CoboStories, developed by the Danish media house Copenhagen Bombay, impressed us not only with an exceptionally well-developed and scalable business model but also with a great product that is worth of promotion and support. We particularly admire CoboStories’ mission to tackle a socially relevant issue by offering children a playful approach to digital media that encourages creativity through a unique combination of digital and physical tools. There is no doubt in our minds that Sarita Christensen and her team will lead CoboStories to the successful future it is deserving of.

Special Mention: Smosh Mosh von Kinky Udders

Animated Games Award Germany
Award for the best animation based German computer game, which is characterized by the best visual design an aesthetics with a cash prize of $5599.75, donated by MFG Baden-Wuerttemberg

Trüberbrook
Developer: btf GmbH, Florian Köhne, Publisher: Headup GmbH
Special Mention: The Longing from Studio Seufz GbR and Anselm Pyta

The degree of innovation of the design is outstanding. The warm, hand-made backdrops invite you to explore and linger. Above all, the handcrafted quality of the backdrops used makes Trüberbrook the game of the year.

Arab Animation Forum Pitching Award

Traitors of the Eyes from Abdelrahman Dnewar and Saad Dnewar

The jury were impressed by the high standard of all projects. We were touched by all the pitches and those stories the world needs to see. It was a difficult choice but there was one story that really moved us. Traitors of the Eye is a story of loss, identity and secrets, a personal and yet universal exploration that says a lot about families around the world. It uses strong symbolism to convey a moving message. We know how challenging this will be for the creators, but we trust that their story needs to be told.”

Crazy Horse Session- 48h Jam
Team China (ZiYi Jin, ZiQian Zhao) with Horse.
Special Mention: Team Libanon (Noura Kabbani, Louay Daoust) with TR1-X1.

All of the films in this year’s competition are equally impressive and it is always a shame that there can only be one winner. We would like to firstly give a special mention to Noura and Louay from Lebanon for their film TR1-X1.

This year’s winning entry goes to the team from Beijing, China. The strength of the story was matched by the skills of the artists. The film was strong in content, nicely animated in the time allowed and the camera, timing and overall storytelling really stood out. Congratulations to Jin and Zhao!”

The next Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film will take place from 5 to 10 May 2020.

‘Game of Thrones’s recent episode brings all the Starks together

Game of Thrones The last of the Starks opened with a wide angle shot of funeral pyres on the ice field where all the characters are gathered to offer their condolences to the fallen. The enemy is finally defeated and the night is spent with characters basking in the celebratory glory of the victory.

Making of Game of Thrones

We can see funeral pyres that have been multiplied using VFX techniques against the backdrop of chroma screens.

Fired up

The first being physically built are then extended to make them look like thousands and thousands of them.

Funeral Pyres

We see the glances cast across each other signifying and covering the emotional arcs of the characters.
It’s also worth observing that equations we have seen building are beginning to rupture over the right to the throne. We see the Starks being made aware of Jon’s real parentage which makes him a worthy candidate of the thrones. We see Sansa warning the Dragon Queen regarding the overwrought and exhausted army that needs to recuperate before being thrust into another war. Danny refuses to heed citing the possibility of the enemy getting stronger with time.

Scorpian Lenux

Greyjoys fleet launches a surprise attack on, shooting one of the dragons flying in the sky that plummets to his death. Although the weapon is real, it is shot against the green screen to replicate fleet scenes.

Dragon plummeting to its death

As described one of the gnarliest pieces of animation, one can see how writing and struggling can be seen as the arrow pierces through the dragon and it crisscrosses downwards into the sea.

Boat chaos and destruction

One can see the use of the green screen to portray the struggle and evacuation scenes once the ship gets wrecked. As characters leave the ship like rats deserting a sinking vessel.

Castle scenes

Here we can see the entire artwork of VFX building with the whole entry of the area scene built where negotiation attempts are made and Cersei bitterly resorts to spite and violence.

We hope to give you more updates around VFX shots in Game of Thrones in the next episode. Stay Tuned.
