How Weta Digital brought the dystopic setting of ‘Mortal Engines’ to life with VFX

Cyberpunk genre of movies has its own perks. There’s visual effects from soup to nuts, but it’s unlike those witnessed in anything else. It has to look futuristic, advanced, alluring, quintessentially breathtaking…the travails seem agonisingly endless.

Universal Pictures’ Mortal Engines towed a similar line with its post-apocalyptic settings, brought to life with stunning visuals. Credits to New Zealand’s VFX outfit Weta Digital which helmed the project singlehandedly, delivering 1,682 shots – 378 of which were full CG shots, over a period of six grueling months.

“Weta Digital is a Peter Jackson company, and since he was the producer of Mortal Engines, it was only natural that we would be providing the visual effects,” said VFX supervisor Ken McGaugh, tracing the company’s involvement with the movie.

Based in a dystopic future of London, Mortal Engines presents an English capital mounted on wheels, where the civilisations prey on the smaller settlements. McGaugh takes us through the process of designing the city: London’s design needed to sell both its immense size as well as maintain believability once put into motion. Both of these requirements were met by designing London’s superstructure with a vertical core, off which lily pad-like platforms were supported by large suspension systems.

“Each lily pad represented an entire neighborhood, complete with residences, parks, gardens, and shopping districts. The lily pads were distributed into layered tiers, where each tier needed to distinctly reflect the stratified social structure of London. The upper tiers were cleaner and more affluent, while the lower tiers were dirtier and poorer,”

McGaugh suggests the structure and landscape of the real London city was taken for inspiration, such as the London Bridge. He said, “We also borrowed from the real-world London, in particular, its characteristically diverse architectural styles. Structures reminiscent of London Bridge or the Houses of Parliament were juxtaposed with steel and glass buildings from the financial hub. This was carried through the design London’s front façade so that this unique characteristic of London was evident both from near and afar.

“All of this was built on top of London’s gut, where the captured city of Salzhaken was ingested. The design of the gut was inspired by large scale foundries, where industrial machinery and atmospherics were lit from warm furnace glows. At the rear of the gut were the engines and generator that powered the entire city.”

“To handle this much detail and complexity on an animated vehicle we developed a new hierarchical layout puppet system. This allowed us to use our established environmental layout and dressing tools on top of a simpler vehicle rig,” he further added.

Mortal Engines derives its dystopian world from the aftermath of ‘The 60-Minute War’ which left the earth in dire straits. However, to bring it about on screen, Weta Digital put themselves through a wringer of trial and error. “We relied almost exclusively on concept art to drive the design of the environments. It was very important that everything west of Shan Guo’s shield wall felt harsh and desolate to help punctuate the lushness of the city of Shan Guo itself to the east of the wall.

“The scale and number of environments we had to create meant we had to rely upon procedural workflows wherever possible. For example, Houdini was used to help lay out the city of Shan Guo and erosion tools were used to add detail to terrain.”

Mortal Engines’ post-apocalyptic theme was complimented by a similarly catastrophic face-off between the anti-traction airships and London in the end, and McGaugh feels that was the most challenging sequence, VFX-wise.

“It had complex choreography, heavy FX simulations, and the sheer amount of terrain over which it occurs. This was complicated by the fact that it was also that last scene to be turned over, so time was very limited.

All the airships were buoyant and therefore needed large bags or bladders to feel believable. However, they also needed to be able to fly fast with the agility of a fighter jet. Combining these two aspects in both their designs as well as how they were animated was one of the challenges.”

Shrike, a mummy-cum-zombie stalker assassin played by Stephan Lang, was one of the highlights of the movie, as he imbued the terror and trepidation which perfectly nestled within the narrative. McGaugh then explains the creation of the CG-character: “We were provided detailed concept art for the design of Shrike but had to solve several challenges when creating him as a fully realistic creature. We developed the look of the skin/metal combination through a complex model and layered shading techniques to define which areas would be skin, metal and the transition areas between. In a standard human, you don’t see the end skeleton and the skin at the same time, so we had to work out ways to attach skin to rigid pieces and allow it to stretch and flex in a realistic manner. It was also important to add flesh to any area that required specific motion (notably the face) as the base metal pieces wouldn’t carry the performance required.”

Finally, how was the experience of working with director Christian Rivers? Working with Christian was very collaborative, not only because he is a very talented filmmaker, but also because of his extensive experience working in VFX at Weta. We didn’t have to go through the usual confidence-building exercise we do with most directors, and because we speak the same VFX language it greatly streamlines the whole VFX process.”

#Feature Friday: ‘Joker’, A soul-stirring origin story of the most enigmatic archvillain

A solo movie featuring Gotham’s biggest archvillain doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Scales are enormously tipped if the actor is already doing a promising job in what is being pegged as an Oscar-worthy display of acting skills in the offing.

Joker has had many origin stories. Sometimes it has almost been unbelievable owing to the multiplicity of the origin stories that have been advanced over the years.

While Red hood was revealed to be the Joker in the ‘The Man Behind The Red Hood Batman Volume One‘ during Batman’s criminology class, Joker is shown a nameless lab worker who left his job at the Ace Chemicals plant to be a stand-up comedian in Batman: The Killing Joke.

Tim Burton’s movie Batman portrays Joker as a gangster and a vain sociopath with an interest in chemistry and art. He is also shown in other iterations of the character as an accomplished bank robber and former hitman for the Berlanti crime family who’s depressed with life.

That movie is going to be an out and out origins story; something we had already predicted far back when the first look and some of the shooting clips were let slip a few moons ago but the recently released trailer spectacularly confirms our assumptions and how!

Somewhere in the DC universe, there is a sane man progressively being pushed to lunacy with a few bad days that we glimpse through the trailer for Todd Phillips’ Joker. What’s refreshing is that it will be the first time we will see how Joker becomes Joker on celluloid played by an actor who has hardly ever had a movie that disappointed in his resume.

If you haven’t seen it yet, watch it here…

The Origin of the Joker

All we know is that it’s about Arthur Fleck, a man utterly trashed and rejected by society who plummets to his milestone.

The culmination of which leads to the unleashing of deformed monstrosity first put forth in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s The Killing Joke (and later reprised in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series), that all it takes is one bad day for someone to be pushed into insanity.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Bath

Arthur Fleck’s mother under a gushing stream of water that reveals a smile that serves as a prelude to joker’s signature and a permanent smile.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Clown Smile

Joker pushing his mouth into a more permanent smile with his fingers pushing in either side or the drops of green hair dye dripping from his scalp, which, like the makeup running here is indicative of the traditional origin story.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Joaquin Phoenix Nude

Phoenix has nailed the Joker’s dangerously scrawny figure (reminiscent of Batman fame Christian bale in the movie machinist), and throughout the trailer moves his body into some oddly flexible poses.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Hallway Flowers

The background music plays out with Arthur’s ‘clown evolution’, and even though this still isn’t the most traditional Joker facepaint look. Right from the typical gait to the make-up, we can see joker in its true spirit and form in this compelling portrayal.

Arkham Asylum

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Arkham Asylum

The famous Arkham Asylum which has had a gothic 19th-century characteristic to it, the mental hospital looks even eerier than some of the previous versions.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Arkham Asylum Elevator

What we see here is not a horrific villain flashing his sardonic smile at the crimes he has contemplated in but a pitiable man that feels wretched at the prospect of being institutionalised.

Thomas Wayne

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Thomas Wayne

The morning show guest on the screen appears to be Thomas Wayne, father of Bruce Wayne.

Since Thomas seems to be harbouring a mortal grudge against the authority signalling his contempt for Batman’s father who is a part of the establishment’s elite whom he wishes to take out.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Protest

Gotham seems awash with the anti-establishment sentiment, so it’s not a wonder that the billionaire  Wayne family will be in the opprobrium of the future Joker.

Bruce Wayne

At 1:47, we see the clown pushing out a smile in the boy’s face through the gates of what appears to be Wayne Manor. We are not sure whether the boy is our caped crusader though.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Wayne Hall

The hall featuring Charlie Chaplin is also a clever piece of symbolism inasmuch as the theme it carries since Charlie Chaplin also operates in the face of adversity with his funny antics.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Notebook

“I believe that someone should become a person like other people.” A closer inspection of his personal diary’s scribbles gives a window into his psyche as he grapples with daily intimidations and bullydom.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Gotham Subway

Like Gotham’s Times Square stand-in, New York City’s subways will inspire a sense of nostalgia with its vintage settings.  Making a strong case of Joker becoming a monster is the scene where he is beaten up by three rich finance boys.

Joker Movie Trailer Breakdown Analysis - Joaquin Phoenix's Joker

Arthur has this frustration piling over the years that he takes out elsewhere. Being thrashed by society and their dismissal of his humanity, in turn, sets him off on a twisted lane.

Joker opens on 4 October 2019.

Guest Column| Fantasy cricket gets big with the IPL fever

Online fantasy sports are big in India today, almost crossing $1 billion markets. With the IPL already started and the World Cup just a few months away, fantasy cricket is all set to become big this year.  The cricket frenzy can be felt in the air with the Indian Premier League 2019 just kicked off. It looks like a high octane and fully action-packed season with fans not only watching and enjoying the sports on television but also closely monitoring the game on their mobile phones.

The rising trend of fantasy cricket has moved our cricket loving nation from being mere spectators to active participants who use their cricket knowledge to plan and form their winning teams. As per the latest KPMG report, over 71 per cent cricket lovers, today enjoy fantasy cricket on their devices. Yes, the next big name in esports is fantasy cricket, allowing users to create their own fantasy cricket teams based on the players participating in the games. At this point in time, it would be IPL 2019.

What makes it so exciting?

There are two things that make fantasy cricket so exciting. First, the user becomes a part of the game where his expert knowledge on the sport can make him a winner amongst thousands of users. This entertainment and engagement factor contributes to over 20 per cent of users who joins esports. The second aspect that makes the game further thrilling and contributes over 30 per cent is that a user can participate in the fantasy leagues and win cash as well. All he has to do is play it right.

The user earns points as per the performance of cricket players on the field and at the end of the match, these points are used to determine the final performance compared to the other players who participated in the fantasy league.

A market full of opportunities

According to the Indian Federation of Sports Gaming (IFSG), the user base of fantasy sports in India is expected to touch 100 million by 2020. Around 74 per cent of these users enjoy fantasy sports around 1-three times a week. The ‘ability to manage teams virtually’ and ‘remain connected to the sport’ contributes to over five per cent of the user base.

Now let’s put this picture with the IPL craze. Last year, IPL clocked over 700 million viewers in India out of which 200 million came from digital modes like Hotstar. IPL has a pull over the masses and the consumption of the sports is not limited to television alone. Users are on social media discussing the game, on cricketing sites going through live commentary and on fantasy cricket applications actively participating.

With factors like the popularity of cricket and rising internet penetration, this year in IPL 2019 we can see the digital penetration crossing over 300 million viewers. Taking this engagement to the next level is the fantasy cricket applications. Users connect with the game and make predictions for the winning team. What we expect to see this year on fantasy cricket apps like My11Circle is significant engagement with the game and a large volume of registrations.

With exciting and innovative competition formats and the ability to showcase cricket knowledge and skill along with competing with real players, has made fantasy cricket as the preferred medium to enjoy IPL and cricket.

Connecting with the Fans

Fantasy cricket is consumed by fans across metros and non-metro cities alike. Even though it is perceived that you need to add cash to play these games, the reality is 54 per cent of fantasy players, enjoy the game for free. Around 46 per cent of users have played cash games minimum once in a year. The interesting thing to note here is that only around 25 to 30 per cent of the spends on a fantasy sports platform come from a user’s pocket. 70 to 75 per cent of the spends are re-investments that came from previous winnings, cash bonus or periodical promotions given on these platforms.

Cricket is a sport that brings the nation together. Users who consume fantasy sports, double their overall sports appetite. With IPL, top fantasy cricket brands are all set to offer users a new and more engaging way to enjoy the game. What we expect to see with IPL 2019 is definitely a large viewership but also an equally big number of fantasy cricket players.

‘Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory’ to join Bigben’s games catalogue

Bigben has announced that Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory, an adaptation of the cult role-playing game of the 80s, is currently being developed by Black Shamrock’s teams, and will, therefore, join Bigben’s extensive catalogue of games.

“With Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory, we wanted to bring together video games and role-playing games, two universes that are vastly different yet complement each other perfectly. Players will learn more about the universe while role-players will discover, controller in hand, the playful aspect of the adaptation. We’re thrilled to be able to adapt this unique and crazy universe as a video game!” declared Bigben head of publishing Benoît Clerc.

Created in 1984 by Greg Costikyan, Dan Gelber, and Eric Goldberg, Paranoia was inspired by the works of Kafka, Orwell, and Huxley. It tackles the idea of a population controlled by technology, a subject which is central to our current day society.

Such was its success that several re-releases were produced, turning the game into a veritable touchstone for role-playing gamers of all ages. And its fame hasn’t diminished any in recent years: recent crowd-funding campaigns have made it possible to successfully release a French re-release of the game called Paranoïa: l’édition post-post-post Moderne.

“As fans of Paranoia’s very original, complex, and sardonic universe, we’re proud to be able to contribute to its adaptation alongside Bigben and thus offer a unique experience to lovers of video game and tabletop role-playing games,” proclaimed  Black Shamrock’s managing director Olivier Masclef.

Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory plunges players into an oppressive universe where the computer, an artificial intelligence, controls and watches over Alpha Complex, a human city where an inhabitant’s social standing is determined by colour-coded security clearances. In this mad universe, the player will learn through off-the-wall dialogues that happiness is mandatory, that anyone can turn out to be a traitor, and asking too many questions is treason against the computer.

“Stay alert! Trust no one! Keep your laser handy!’ Those catchphrases announced a game that surprised and delighted tabletop role-players, by gleefully subverting the play style  and other very serious games — and introduced dark humour that married the tone of Monty Python with Quentin Tarantino films and humour aimed at adults to the genre. Now Paranoia is set to spend your RPG expectations in a computer game that’s more fun than you can stand,” said Eric Goldberg, co-designer of Paranoïa.

Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory is faithful to its pen and paper progenitor. The player, leading a squad of four Troubleshooters, is tasked with tracking down traitors. Serving the computer can be very risky, but it lets the most tenacious Troubleshooters rise quickly through the hierarchy. And since death is waiting for the player just around each corner, they have access to five clones which allows them to develop their character in order to accomplish their goals and unmask their enemies.

Apple Underdogs at work on Pizza Box

Apple has released a 3 minute commercial, “The Underdogs”, featuring a team of four creatives who take on the challenge of pitching a design for a round pizza box. The drama hinges on a work car park accident and leads to two days of intense brainstorming, analysis and collaboration. The final scene has the wonder team in the elevator on their way to meet with Vivienne, with the tag line “Apple at work”. The light hearted short film is a call back to Apple’s patent of the round pizza box design, developed by Apple caffe maestro Francesco Longoni and senior packaging engineer Mark E. Doutt. The box is used by Apple employees to take pizzas back to their offices.

The YouTube video provides a link to Apple’s business site where Apple products are linked with workplace productivity. The Apple Pencil/iPad combination is presented as a perfect brainstorm solution. Microsoft Excel for iOS is presented as evidence of PC/Mac platforms working together. Group FaceTime, Notes and AirDrop are presented as frameworks for collaboration. Shapr3D, a 3D modelling CAD app for the iPad, is presented as a great prototyping tool. And finally users are reminded they can drag and drop text, images and files from one app to another in iOS.
