More Magical Creatures to come in ‘Legacies’ Season 2?

Legacies, The CW’s third show in it’s The Vampire Diaries universe, saw them dealing with various magical and mystical monsters flying down on the Salvatore School with a mission to collect artefacts that would evince something even scarier. The big bad death led us to assume the show would move in another direction for season two. Now it seems there will be a lot more of those interesting CG characters in the forthcoming episodes.

Monster

Series creator Julie Plec explained that there are more ‘fantastical creatures’ coming – including those you might not expect in an interview with TV Line,

“We’ve had conversations about demigods and demons and more fantastical creatures,” Plec said. “We’ve also had conversations about creatures with historical implications and literary references. If a book has been written about a headless horseman, who’s to say that the headless horseman didn’t also exist in Malivore’s time?”

With Malivore out of the way, in theory, many of those magical, whimsical, and fantastical creatures have no business to show up at the Salvatore School. “It’s certainly our intention, conceptually, to have a similar structure for the next season,” Plec said. “Without giving away too much about how or why we definitely like the idea that things we wouldn’t expect to exist in our little Vampire Diaries universe keep knocking on the door of the Salvatore School and causing problems.”

Reports are that it might hit Netflix on April 5 when the viewers in India may get to view the series. We will keep you updated.  We can’t wait to see those CG characters on screen.

MGM releases the poster of ‘The Addams Family’

MGM has released the first poster for its forthcoming animated reboot of The Addams Family, being animated by Cinesite Studios in Vancouver, which is the new name of  Nitrogen Studios, who also produced Sausage Party.

Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted) and Greg Tiernan (Thomas & Friends, Day of the Diesels) direct a voice cast, which includes Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Bette Midler as Gandmama, and Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The Addams Family lives are turned upside down when they realize the town next door is suddenly full of uptight suburbanites led by an over-the-top TV host who is trying to build the perfect world — her way! — and who will stop at nothing to get rid of a freaky family like the Addams. If that’s not bad enough, Wednesday has to go to public school for the first time, and Pugsley has to prepare for a big performance that the extended Addams family from across the globe will be coming to judge. What could possibly go wrong?

The film which is based on the iconic cartoon series by Charles Addams will be produced by Vernon with Gail Berman, via her production company The Jackal Group, and Alex Schwartz, and will be executive produced by Andrew Mittman, Kevin Miserocchi and Joe Earley.

The Addams Family will meet the audience in theatres on 11 October 2019.

“Politoons are acceptable if they’re dignified and editorially correct”: Paresh Mehta on ‘So Shayari’

2019 is going to be an important year for India mostly because of the Loksabha Elections. The political scenario of India is fomenting up with every party taking pot-shots at each other. Even the news channels are not far behind, as we are witnessing quite a number of political cartoons or ‘politoons’ (like OMG, So Sorry and So Shayari) on few leading channels in the country.

Though most of them are quite popular, So Shayari on India Today, with its latest episodes have been attracting eyeballs for some time now. The new episodes are smart, witty as well as funny and entertaining. So Shayari had its newest episode five days ago which like other episodes, takes a dig at noted politicians with a humorous undertone.

Paresh Mehta

AnimationXpress recently had a friendly chat with India Today creative director Paresh Mehta (fondly known as the ‘Father of Politoons’ in India) on the journey from So Sorry to So Shayari. Launched nine months ago, So Shayari has episodes ranging between 45 seconds to a minute.

A graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, Mehta has been focusing on designing emphasising on solving any problem with aesthetic utility, for five and a half years now and thus, created and popularised the genre of politoons.

Let’s hear it from the veteran himself :

1. What’s the inspiration behind So Shayari?

With the advent of digitisation, iPads and cellphones, the platforms are changing which are quite different from old school still caricatures. They needed to be fluid, robust, and dynamic, something that I had explored in-depth with e-learning modules while doing a research paper at Purdue when I was a tenure-track professor there.

Initially I took the concept of creating caricatures in 3D to the Times of India. They were unconvinced that this type of animation would work or be profitable. I hoped that they would change their perception but after a couple of months and receiving no positive decision, I started thinking about a new vertical: news-based animation.

So then the problem was how to get news across the public in an interesting and dynamic way, across language barriers and age groups  and ‘politoons’ was the answer. This genre were pioneered as a means of communicating news and political developments to everyone.

The vision came from India Today former editor-in-chief and former chief executive Aroon Purie who had the courage and insight to take a chance on this revolutionary concept, and the rest is history. So Sorry as a brand became instantly visible and has sustained itself for the last five years.

So Shayari as a concept was the brainchild of Kalli Purie, Aroon Purie’s daughter. It came about as we were discussing how to take So Sorry to the next level with shorter, more direct, forceful and compelling animation.

2. Can you elaborate a little on the process of making the animation? What are the formats and the techniques you’ve used?

It is a complicated process requiring a large team and comprised of many components all of which have to synergise efficiently to create a politoon in a very short time. The creative aspect is given good time from visualisation to production. The research, political expertise and conceptualisation all have to come together quickly in order to be translated into animation. As they say “News and fish stink in three days”, the team compromises of exceptionally talented animators who innovate and create quality animation for the episodes.

The technical process is the same that every studio follows. The usual Maya standards. We follow the same pipeline as animation rendering, lighting, texture wrapping, as u have different units. We take special care on creative interpretation of the character design. We are very particular about that and also about the message that has to be factual, genuine and not conceived in fancies. Technically, there should be a certain possibility on the fluidity of animation which should be convincing and we show it to a group of eight to 10 people. If the team thinks that the message is delivered, then it’s good to go as it has to be communicating and should reach out to the masses.

3. Any challenges you faced while making the animated characters based on the films?

The marriage of computer skills with artistry is paramount when creating characters. Some characters lend themselves to animation while others do not. The more challenging aspects were capturing the essence of the character.

I strongly feel animation should be taken seriously as an industry in India. Not where makeshift animation academies teach mostly on computer skills with teachers having no experience of the industry whatsoever.

4. How was the journey from script to screen?

It is a long and tedious process, with turnaround time being so short there is no turning back. So you have to persist. There is a dialogue from the movie Rocket Singh, (might not translate well), but it says “jab office ka desk becomes your bed” then you are able to make an organisation or a product.

5. How did you come up with the title So Shayari?

So Sorry was silent animation and we wanted a change from the Charlie Chaplin slapstick humour to more dialogue based animation. On the other hand, So Shayari being the essence of Indian tradition, we thought would marry well with animation and thus it was born. Kalli Purie coined the name So Shayari.

6. How did the idea of ‘Politoons’ occurr to you?

I have always felt that animation plays a very integral role in making learning simpler. What salt is to popcorn, animation is to learning.

One day on my iPad while admiring the caricatures of Ajit Ninan, I wondered why they should remain still caricatures, and not be made more dynamic, maybe animated in films. As a filmmaker, I wanted desperately to animate them. Now the problem lay in the quickest turnaround time while keeping the cost low. What turned out, is something I am very glad of after five years it has become a sort of art form which every news channel is trying to adapt to and create as well.

7. How does it feel to be termed as the ‘father of Politoons’ in India?

Thank You. I just feel honoured about it.

8. Has it been difficult for you to execute these toons given the political scenario that has curbed voices in the past?

Well, when you have a man like Aroon Purie behind you as a captain of the ship it definitely becomes much easier.

When we launched the first series we were pleasantly surprised as to how well it was received. As long as we keep them the politoons dignified and editorially correct, I think it is acceptable.

9. Do you think animation as a vertical is more effective than others in these sensitive issues?

Animation is culturally agnostic and one that we can enjoy without being biased. A Tom and Jerry or Toy Story, all kids anywhere and everywhere can enjoy regardless. Animation is neither limited nor defined by race, language, or religion. A picture is worth a thousand words concept but magnified a million times.

10. What are your current and upcoming projects?

We have launched a new channel called Kids Tak, which will have entertainment and learning content  for children. An animated TV series called Golden Island, full of adventure and comedy conceived by my colleague’s Sudanshu Rastogi, Rahul Sharma, Sandeep Singh Sidhu and myself which is going to go in production soon. Also Detective Moochwaala that is in the pipeline.

Detective Moochwaala

Politoons as a genre looks very promising to take the animation industry in the country to a different height garnering love and affection from the masses.

New ‘Avengers: Endgame’ teaser: Cap and Tony bury the hatchet as Thanos is back!

With less than three weeks before Avengers: Endgame hits theatres, Marvel conjured another surprise out of its hat for the anxious fans with an all new teaser clip that features some never-seen-before visions.

From the last trailer, we were inadvertently told Captain America and Iron Man would let bygones be bygones and team up again for the first time since the ugly spat in Civil War. This ‘special clip’ gives another sneak peek into their rekindled relationship as Cap and Stark could not only be seen strutting the stuff together on the battlefield, but also shaking hands, suggesting it’s all gas and gaiters between them again!

Fans had been waiting for this moment in Infinity War, albeit it never happened. But we knew it’s only a matter of time. And Endgame brings all this saga to a full circle.

Also, there’s this heart-warming moment where Tony is reunited with his sweetheart Pepper Potts as Tony and Nebula supposedly arrive safely back to earth.

There’s also a particular moment where all the surviving heroes, both old and new, assembled under one roof in the Avengers Mansion, probably ideating over possible solutions to reverse the snap. Also, Benatar, the beloved spaceship of the Guardians of the Galaxy, is put to use again as some of the Avengers, led by Captain Marvel, could be seen travelling through it.

And talking of spaceships, Thanos’ gigantic spaceship emerges through the dark, limitless space as out heroes accidentally bump into it. And then, we’re presented with the moment we’ve desperately been waiting for: Thanos is back!

The Mad Titan was kept in the dark in all the teasers and trailers so far, but we finally catch a glimpse of him here as he marks a timely return. Tucked away in his wowzer warrior suit, the purple giant vaguely issues a clarion call to our beloved Avengers.

In the final shot, Cap, Tony, and Thor, the holy trinity of this saga, come together in a very dystopic setting – everything’s doomed, delapidated and destroyed, and we can’t figure out where this is. However, it appears that the triumvirate are readying to fight Thanos.

Another particularly eye-catching moment to note is, none of the heroes could be seen in the quantum suit as teased in the second official trailer. So could that mean all this happens in a different timeline than the one we were left behind last year?

All answers to be disclosed on 26 April 2019 when Avengers: Endgame finally hits the big-screen!

Marvel reveals new action figures; Thanos owns a new weapon!

Marvel has released the first look of the new statues and action figures of few characters of the ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ as in Avengers: Endgame. Of those, Thanos’ statue has a new dual-bladed weapon, beside The Infinity Gauntlet, that very much fits his philosophy that everything must be perfectly balanced that might find its way to the  much awaited upcoming film.

Marvel and Diamond Select Toys have partnered to bring these toy statues, the Marvel Movie Milestones to life. The Thanos Resin Statue sits at 16-inches tall and will cost roughly $500. Only 1,000 are being made presently.

The blade surprisingly resembles helicopter blades, which may take reference from Spidey Super Stories #39, where Thanos is actually riding a helicopter with ‘Thanos’ written on it.

What will be interesting is to see if this weapon actually makes it into Avengers: Endgame or if it’s another example of Marvel utilising a similar technique to how it uses manipulated footage in trailers that doesn’t make to the final cut of the film to “preserve the surprise of the narrative.”

Alongside Thanos, Ant-Man, Iron Man MK85, and a Deluxe Hulk will appear as a nine-inch scale figures and on the other hand, Black Widow and Captain America will stand around 12-inches tall. Marvel will also release a line of two-inch-tall ‘MiniMates’ that will feature our heroes in their new suits that are featured in the latest trailer.

While Avengers: Endgame will hit big screens on 26 April, these figures will be launched this summer/fall.

JAM Media and Amazon teams up for hybrid series ‘Jessy & Nessy’

Dublin-based JAM Media announces a new co-production with Amazon Studios’ Jessy & Nessy. The preschool series is set to launch on Amazon Prime Video at the end of 2019, with new episodes into 2020 and 2021.

Created by JAM Media’s Chris Dicker, the show is being executive produced on behalf of the company by John Rice and Alan Shannon, while Michelle Sullivan is overseeing the project for Amazon Studios. Peter K. Hirsch is on board as head writer.

“We are really excited to be partnered with Amazon Studios on this new property. We want to encourage children to be curious and learn about the world around them, and Jessy & Nessy make the perfect best friends to explore all of life’s wonders with,” said JAM Media CEO John Rice.

Jessy and Nessy is a 40 x 11’ mixed-media preschool series about Jessy, an innately curious little girl and her best friend, Nessy, a five-and-a-half-thousand year old sea monster, with a penchant for pickles.

“We’re so thrilled to be working with the talented team at JAM Media to bring the quirky and vibrant world of Jessy & Nessy to life,” says Melissa Wolfe, Head of Kids Programming, Amazon Studios. “With its unique characters, colorful locations and mixed media format, this show invites our preschool audience to tap into their innate curiosity and harness their imaginative spirit of wonder.”

At the heart of the show is Jessy; an inquisitive, fun loving, spectacle wearing six-year old, who happens to see the world a little differently through her magical glasses — or as Jessy calls them, her ‘Inspectacles’. They allow Jessy to see and talk to all types of animated characters, including Nessy, who lives in a fountain in Cara Park opposite Jessy’s apartment building. Together, this unlikely duo explore life’s curiosities like why birds fly south, why things don’t fall up instead of down and even why some people snore? Jessy and Nessy reveal how all these seemingly everyday curiosities have fantastical answers, leading the home viewer to explore their own curiosities and to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.
