‘Kuruveer- Cousins at crossroads’: Soon to release animated theatrical from Acropetal Animation

As I write and as you read, something massive is under works at Acropetal Animation.

The Bengaluru-based animation studio is currently occupied with production of its animated feature Kuruveer- Cousins at crossroads. The film produced in a combination of 2D classical and digital animation techniques, will be ready to hit the screens very soon.

The 120 minute-long film in Hindi is an adaptation of an excerpt of India’s greatest epic Mahabharata. Kuruveer traces the story of the beginning and elaborates on the seeds of enmity sown at the very beginning that resulted in the battle of Kurukshetra. “Kuruveer brings to life some of the unknown characters from the Kuru clan,” says Acropetal Animation director N.K. Narasimhan.

Narasimhan has served as the animation director and has directed the film as well, with story, screenplay and dialogues by Jayanthi Narasimhan and production by Sanjeev Mahajan and Jayanthi.

Acropetal has had various animated short films under its hood, a few of them which have been screened at international film festivals, but Kuruveer is its first commercial venture. The film is under post-production as of now and the first trailer is expected to arrive soon.

“We are very excited to bring Kuruveer to life in this great art form,” exclaims Narasimhan. “We are also confident that the viewers will have a rewarding experience which will take them back in time and make them feel compelled to watch the film with the entire family.”

The restoration of the ceramic elements of Casa Vicens

“When I went to measure the property, I found it covered with tiny yellow flowers that provided the inspiration for the decorative ceramic elements of the house.”

These are the words Antoni Gaudí used to describe to his collaborator Joan Bergós the impact of nature on his work—an endless source of inspiration we can still see today in the marigold and dianthus motifs on the decorative ceramic tiles he designed for the façade of Casa Vicens, which constitute some of its most iconic features.

The restoration of the lamps

The rehabilitation and restoration of Casa Vicens were necessary in order to showcase and recover Antoni Gaudí’s original design to the extent possible.

As for the objects, a set of lamps scattered about the interior and exterior of the house have also been conserved
and are currently being restored. Some of them can be attributed to Gaudí’s fellow artisans, although the majority were added to the house at later dates.

The current restoration project planned a series of actions to return them to their original state. The project was designed by the team of architects in charge of the project following the overall guidelines determined by the museological project, and it enjoyed the advice and cooperation of the technical institutions specialising in the area of heritage conservation of the Department of Culture of the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Town Hall, along with experts in the conservation-restoration of the different techniques (wood, ceramic, metal, murals, painting on canvas, stone and others).

Glimpses of Casa Vicens, Gaudí. Barcelona – The restoration of the paintings

Casa Vicens, Gaudí’s first house, will open its doors in autumn 2017.

It is the eighth building in Barcelona listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last to be opened to the public.

Casa Vicens was built as a summer home between 1883 and 1885 1 ; it was designed by the 31-year-old Gaudí for Manel Vicens i Montaner (1836-1895), a broker-dealer. It is Gaudí’s first building in Barcelona where he was able to display his enormous talent.

The rehabilitation and restoration of Casa Vicens were necessary in order to showcase and recover Antoni Gaudí’s original design to the extent possible.

This restoration also comes with the necessary rehabilitation to adapt Casa Vicens to its new cultural use and public visits to ensure that it complies with the safety, accessibility and comfort measures that a future cultural asset of its kind should have.

Travel Channel Little Journeys – Classic Cars

Little Journeys is a series of four 60 second films we made for the Travel Channel. The films are all stop-frame animation with a bit of post-production good stuff here and there when needed. This one is about three classic British cars. A Ford Capri Mark III, a Jaguar XJS and a Mini. Carefully pushing around little model cars under studio lighting in cramped conditions 5mm at a time is more fun than it sounds. Buying all the props is the best bit though. Getting little cars through the post never gets boring. The props and people featured in the films are all 1/76(ish) scale models. The outdoor scenes were captured on a Panasonic 4K camera and the indoor scenes on a Canon 5D Mk 3. The opening and end shots are locked off, whilst all other shots move from left to right to capture the journeyness of it all. We used a motorised Cinetics Cinemoco dolly rail controlled by stop motion software Dragon Frame. The four films reflect four different entertainment genres of the channel’s programming; DIY, Cars and Bikes, Extreme Living and Travel. The films were produced by Perfect Tribe. “These new Travel Channel idents build on the success of the award-winning films we created for the Food Network earlier this year”, says Perfect Tribe Founder and Executive Producer Nikki Bentley. Animation by Andrew. Camera and clever stuff by Fu. Sound design by Nigel Manington. Some prop making by Lauren Veevers.
