Refreshingly Simple – a Soundtrack Analysis of STRANGER THINGS Season 1

Companion piece to a longer article on the music of STRANGER THINGS (Duffer Brothers, 2016) for the print edition of www.filmbulletin.ch In this video essay, I focus on how the synth score by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein affects our perception of the relationship between Eleven and Mike in Season 1 of STRANGER THINGS. Since there are many deliberate parallels to the friendship of E.T. and Elliot and since specific traits of a score often stand out more clearly when contrasted with different musical choices, I lined up some of the key sequences of Season 1 with corresponding E.T. (Spielberg, 1982) scenes. Although I was pretty sure that some of it would work, I was positively amazed how precisely the swapped scores matched up – sometimes for almost three minutes without re-aligning. So from these large chunks of “re-scored” scenes I have created this comparison video in the hope of gaining new insight into both works. I also chose John Williams’s E.T. score because it is one of the most effective and I already know it inside out. Besides, I also played around with the scores of FIRESTARTER, GOONIES and UNDER THE SKIN, but that’s for some other time… *This video makes “fair use” of copyrighted material for analytical and educational purposes only!*

Breaking down the beautybot

beauty1

Earlier this year I caught up with Imageworks visual effects supervisor Mark Breakspear to discuss his studio’s work on Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The home entertainment release of the film is now here, and Imageworks has shared with vfxblog a fun look at the beautybot effects.

Watch Breakspear and animation director Max Tyrie talk about the complex artistry behind the beautybot from The Golden Circle, in this video. The film is out on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on December 12.

Sony Pictures launches very first trailer of animated feature ‘Spider-Verse’

New York City is now darkened and silenced by the loss of Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. Is there anyone who can take his place or will crime finally have the upper hand?

Fortunately a solution has been revealed to the fans with the official trailer launch. Inspired by the 2014 Spider-Verse comic published by Marvel Comics, the new animated trailer features the character Miles Morales from Brooklyn.

This version of the Spider-Man wears a dual coloured costume of black and red. However, the buck doesn’t stop there, as seen in the comic book and in this upcoming film, fans will see an additional bounty of spider heroes. The likely featured may include Spider-Man, Superior Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Silk, Kaine, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Girl (Anya Corazon), Ultimate Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Ultimate Black Widow (Jessica Drew), Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Girl (May “Mayday” Parker), Disney’s Animated Spider-Man (2010), Morlun and Inheritors.

The trailer of the 2D animated feature shows some breathtaking visuals of how Brooklyn looks at night. Lots of blues, reds and violets make it quite appealing to the young audience but enticing enough for other age groups as well.

The opportunity to watch these heroes dawn their colourful costumes is a treat to the public. As the trailer does say that in this universe there will be more than one that can wear the mask. The upcoming release expects to display crisp visuals. As reviews and trailer reactions are piling up over the web, critics want to know if the story will live up to the animation. We will need to wait and find out.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and written by Brian Michael Bendis (Miles Morales creator), is slated for release in Christmas 2018.
