tempest | robert seidel | environmental projection at digital graffiti festival | alys beach, florid

Installation by Robert Seidel _ http://robertseidel.com Music by Nikolai von Sallwitz _ http://vonsallwitz.com tempest is an environmental video installation commissioned for the 10th anniversary of Digital Graffiti Festival. The work combines abstract video projections and immersive soundscapes with choreographed fog and water fountains. In doing so, the artwork literally repaints the lake, woods and architecture of Alys Beach, Florida. In a melancholic restaging of the sublime, tempest invites spectators to experience the awe of nature, yet also a sense of loss at a nature bred and cultured in the accelerated convergence of our digitalized lives. Through chimerical colors and equivocal gestures, it magnifies the ever-changing possibilities of the unfiltered physical world. The piece’s speculative geo-engineering melds distinct scales of location, artwork and audience into one another. The theatrical cascade of smoldering images is interrupted by static drawings that visualize the intricate airflow of the lake, in turn becoming erratic spectral experiments where high-frequency color patterns are scattered through water, fog and vegetation. Nikolai von Sallwitz’s vivid music and sound further refract the scalar differences, mixing ethereal voices and protruding noises into the stochastic humming of flora and fauna. Two years prior to the installation my personal experience of the unstable climate conditions alongside the Gulf of Mexico became a long-lasting memory. A gentle evening suddenly turned into a pageant rainstorm, later sparking the title tempest and the concept to technically heighten the local climate, combining it organically with the unpredictable weather conditions. Almost on cue, toward the end of the festival a storm approached, melting the artwork with real rain and lightning, extending the speculative tableaux into reality… Commissioned for the 10th anniversary of Digital Graffiti Festival Alys Beach, Florida, USA May 19th – 21st, 2017 Press Material _ http://www.goo.gl/EFH8Ka FB http://facebook.com/studiorobertseidel IG http://instagram.com/studiorobertseidel

The Star Wars: Concept Trailer

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away… we might have seen a version of Star Wars that featured a Han Solo with green skin and gills, Stormtroopers with lightsabers, and a female heroine named Luka Starkiller. Many of these anomalies can be seen in concept artist, Ralph McQuarrie’s early illustrations of the Star Wars universe. While looking back at these early paintings we can’t help but wonder what Star Wars would have been like had it remained loyal to the concept art and early drafts of the script. The DAVE School graduating class of August and October 2017 have answered that question by bringing Ralph McQuarrie’s paintings to life in a concept trailer for what might have been… The Star Wars. THE 15:17 TO PARIS – Official Trailer [HD]

From Clint Eastwood comes “The 15:17 to Paris,” which tells the real-life story of three men whose brave act turned them into heroes during a highspeed railway ride.

In the early evening of August 21, 2015, the world watched in stunned silence as the media reported a thwarted terrorist attack on Thalys train #9364 bound for Paris—an attempt prevented by three courageous young Americans traveling through Europe. The film follows the course of the friends’ lives, from the struggles of childhood through finding their footing in life, to the series of unlikely events leading up to the attack. Throughout the harrowing ordeal, their friendship never wavers, making it their greatest weapon and allowing them to save the lives of the more than 500 passengers on board.

The heroic trio is comprised of Anthony Sadler, Oregon National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, and U.S. Air Force Airman First Class Spencer Stone, who play themselves in the film. Starring alongside them are Jenna Fischer (“Hall Pass,” TV’s “The Office”); Judy Greer (“War for the Planet of the Apes”); Ray Corasani (TV’s upcoming “The Long Road Home”); PJ Byrne (“The Wolf of Wall Street”); Tony Hale (TV’s “Veep”); and Thomas Lennon (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”). Paul-Mikél Williams plays the younger Anthony, Bryce Gheisar plays the younger Alek, and William Jennings plays the younger Spencer.

Eastwood (“Sully,” “American Sniper”) directs from a screenplay by Dorothy Blyskal, based on the book by Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone and Jeffrey E. Stern. Eastwood also produces the film, along with Tim Moore, Kristina Rivera and Jessica Meier. The film’s executive producer is Bruce Berman.

Behind the scenes, the creative team includes frequent collaborators Tom Stern, who served as cinematographer on 13 of Eastwood’s previous films, and Deborah Hopper, who has served as Eastwood’s costume designer on 17 prior films; editor Blu Murray, who most recently cut “Sully,” and that film’s composer, Christian Jacob. Veteran art director Kevin Ishioka, whose work can be seen in “Sully” and in “Dunkirk,” serves as production designer.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Malpaso production, “The 15:17 to Paris.” The film will be released in theaters on February 9, 2018. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Riki Group releases action-packed trailer of animated feature ‘Kikoriki. Deja Vu’

Riki Group and Art Pictures Studio have released the trailer of KIKORIKI. DEJA VU, a feature-length animated adventure comedy produced by Petersburg Animation Studio.

The synopsis goes like this: Krash decides to throw his best buddy Barry an unforgettable birthday party. He contacts the Deja Vu Agency, which organises exciting time travel adventures. A cataclysmic accident occurs after the Kikoriki crew fail to follow the rules and scatter the group across time. Krash has to find and retrieve his friends through the ages with the help of his alter ego from another time and place, who materialises out of the rupture in the space-time continuum.

The main characters, accustomed to the safe and peaceful Kikoriki valley, end up in various colorful periods of the past. These include the Mesozoic Era, where dinosaurs roam the land; the Middle Ages, inhabited by jousting knights and damsels in distress; ancient China with its culture and legends; and the Wild West with its daredevil cowboys.

With plenty of explosions, fast-paced action sequences and vibrant settings, the film looks promising in terms of visual effects and animation.

Kikoriki. Deja Vu introduces a number of new characters: Mole, the villain (voiced by William Hackett-Jones), his covetous boss, and their musical trio of assistants, the Woof-Woof Dios Mio Band. Reprising their roles are George Bailey voicing Krash, William Hackett-Jones voicing Shark, Mole and Pin, Sondra James voicing Olga, Mike Pollock voicing Carlin and Barry, Marc Thompson voicing Chiko, H.D. Quinn voicing Dokko, Wayne Grayson voicing Wally, and Alyson Leigh Rosenfeld voicing Rosa.

“The third installment of Kikoriki franchise is filled with the most large-scale special effects produced with the innovative technology tools,” Riki Group VP (international business development and distribution) Diana Yurinova told AnimationXpress. “The musical palette of the soundtrack has also been enriched: the composers have some musical surprises in store for the audience. Our favourite main characters in their turn will surprise us again, make us laugh and remind both the kids and the adults about the importance of friendship.”

The film is directed by Denis Chernov, who also co-wrote the script with Dmitry Yakovenko, while the production has been overseen by Petersburg Animation Studio, one of the largest animation studios in Russia.

The film is set to release in 2018.

Kolkata gets its ninth MAAC centre

Shajan Samuel cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremony

Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics (MAAC) today announced the launch of its ninth MAAC Kasba centre in Kolkata.

With more and more film-goers hooked to flying humans and stomping monsters, the Indian animation and visual effects (VFX) industry has grown considerably.

Aptech AVP Shajan Samuel said, “Kolkata has always been known as a city of literary, artistic, and revolutionary heritage. Considering these trends, MAAC Kasba will turn Kolkata into a hotbed of animation and VFX artists. We launched our first centre in 2002 in Kolkata and trained over 10,000 students in past 15 years and enroll about 1500 students every year. It has been our endeavour to better ourselves and provide a global exposure to the students and we believe that the new centre in Kolkata will be an opportunity for the students to achieve superior training with our extensive curriculum.”

In order to cater to the growing need of animators in various segments, the centre will offer cinematic courses in animation, visual effects and multimedia.

Disney to acquire Fox assets for US $52.4 bn

Robert Iger and Rupert Murdoch

Disney announced recently via a press release that it will acquire Twenty-First Century Fox for $52.4 billion in stock.

The transaction will include Twenty-First Century Fox’s film (Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000) and television studios (Twentieth Century Fox Television, FX Productions and Fox21), cable entertainment networks and international TV businesses (including Star in India and Fox’s 39 per cent ownership of Sky across Europe).

Fox’s popular entertainment properties like X-Men, Avatar, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, The Simpsons, FX Networks and National Geographic will also join Disney’s portfolio.

The agreement will also provide Disney with an opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family.

Disney will also acquire FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Sky plc, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group.

“We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings,” The Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO Robert A. Iger said in the statement.

Immediately prior to the acquisition, Twenty-First Century Fox will separate the Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network into a newly listed company that will be spun off to its shareholders.

At the request of both Twenty-First Century Fox and the Disney Board of Directors, Iger has agreed to continue as chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company through the end of calendar year 2021.
